  • While I research for the character build guide videos, I figured I'd produce some other character related content for you all and provide myself just a bit of wiggle room!
Today we look at alignments; specifically Lawful good and have a chat about what that generally looks like!
So have a seat, stay a while and listen here at the gamers den!

A Lawful Good Is Great As A Friend, Horrible As An Accomplice

Being Lawful Good, as with Chivalry, isnt about being infallible. It is about the journey to strive to meet those standards. Its a constant state of reflection and striving to be better. Chivalry, and being Lawful Good is doing the right thing, at the right time.. especially when no one is watching.

There is a difference between being nice and being kind. Niceness is a matter of looking outwardly pleasing to others while kindness is acting upon compassion. One of my lawful good characters tends to act polite upon first meeting, but she will also resort to criticize others, even harshly, on mistakes because that's how she was raised. To her, it's a matter of "making the person stronger" and "tough love" because that's how she saw her mother treat her. It's her intention to do someone a favor by scolding them so harshly as to avoid a possibly fatal error, but later on she recognizes that her actions can do more harm than good. She bottles up her own feelings and she has a hard time understanding the feelings of others. I definitely agree that there can be different takes on lawful good instead of just being this seemingly perfect, law-abiding citizen or being this ultimately nice person who lacks intelligence. We all have flaws and having perfect characters all the time is dull. Making mistakes is part of the fun and the journey to true greatness.

You're absolutely right and that sounds like a really complex character, I love everything about what you've described.
Yeah, alignments are just...well I keep saying it: broad. There's a lot that can fit underneath the umbrella of Lawful Good and I find going on general guidelines and RP to be way more fun than strict interpretations.

To be honest, the seemingly "nice" person would be lawful evil/lawful neutral.

@@juliuscaesar5397 I totally agree! Especially with a lawful evil character, I can see niceness being used to deceive and hide true intentions. Makes it more realistic. :)

My personal interpretation for a lawful alignment is someone who puts himself second before a certain code or principle, whereas someone who is chaotic has the freedom to go beyond said code/principle. Robinhood will always be chaotic good, even if he's in a lawful good society, due to his independence and free will, whilst a devout rabbi will remain devout to his principles even when in a lawful evil society.
Lawful Good is a follower of something who goes out of his way to do good. For example, a rabbi who follows a deeper principle of generosity would be considered Lawful Good.
Lawful Neutral is a follower of something. For example, a samurai warrior who prays to the gods every day for an honorable victory in battle would be considered Lawful Neutral.
Lawful Evil is a follower of something due to selfish reasons. For example, a Karen who follows a principle like "the right thing to do" and/or Christianity, using it to judge people who are different and place herself at the top, would be considered Lawful Evil.

    Name: Ahřát Kalðron
    Race: Dwarf
    Alignment: Lawful Good
    Kingdom: Altëjrák
I was born in the Holy Empire as an honored warrior, respected by my allies and feared by my enemies. Upon my adolescence, I was supposed to be a priest of Aðærës and a faithful clergyman. That was blocked by my city's destruction and the slaughter of my people by the godless Republicans. Now, I am a knight of the Empire, faithful warrior of true sovereignty. I march with my men to rebel strongholds to impose order and bring glory to my nation. I fight for the poor and the rich equally, protecting the innocents from being slaughtered by the minions of Jacques Rochelin and his 'Liberation Front' so that we can once again live in peace and glory. Glory to Triune Orthodoxy, Glory to the Empire, and Glory to Aðærës!

I recently found this channel and I watched all of your alignment videos. Gotta say I love your stuff! Really interesting perspectives on each alignment. Honestly it'd be just as cool to play under you as DM for you. I actually used your Chaotic Evil video as inspiration for ruling in my campaign. Seriously great stuff! Keep at it!

Color me stunned! It took me a good thirty seconds to process this, the compliment means a great deal to me!
I'm glad you found something useful in these videos! If I were in a position to DM online games I'd be happy to take on viewers in different arcs and guest specials!
Maybe someday. But in the meantime: Thank you again!

The waaaing about alignment is carryover from have class powers tied to alignment.

Indeed so, which is why I'm glad 5E D&D and Pathfinder ended up being more flexible in character alignment for the various classes.

I don’t mind the alignment system I’ve been playing d&d since 1992. I would of liked to have seen alignment turned into worldview. Including stuff like political worldview. This would also include religious worldview. And other things related to worldview. I’ve been enjoying your videos they are good.

I played a lawful good Dwarf cleric, he was racist against elves. He would still help or save an elf but was generally rude and couldn't stand them. He was also grumpy but very generous.

Sounds about right, probably would fit in alright in the Warhammer Fantasy setting, given the grudges between the dwarves and elves.

I see Lawful Good as a miserable alignment. They follow laws, even the ones the don’t agree with. They do this because they trust law to do right in the long run, but not all situations due to unseen conflicts and complications. I know it’s not something I could play well.
