    I saw Capricorn 1 in theaters when I was 8 yrs old. Back when they made real movies: great writing, solid original story, grand actors and a epic ending to make you definitely not trust "the Man". This was made when OJ Simpson was still beloved and the Hertz rent a car guy not a cartoon for LA excess ... 40+ years later.. it holds up very well.

    Capricorn One is one of my favorite films saw it 6 times in the theater when I was 6 years old. One of the best Jerry Goldsmith scores ever. This film has even more relevance today than it did back then as a loosely disguised Moon landing conspiracy allegory and yet here we are almost 50 years later and we’ve never landed on Mars and still haven’t returned to the Moon. Watching it now is a chilling parable about the dark political truths and media misdirection. Essential viewing for any free thinker.

      Couldn't agree more! This is a great mixture of paranoid conspiracy thriller and (in it's final act) all out action flick. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, very much appreciated.

    At least OJ learnt how to run from the authorities making this movie. 😊👍

    Thanks for your review. Agree with your overall assessment. I really enjoy David Doyle as Gould's assignment editor and his gleeful sarcasm. I guess the desert chase/survival scenes are ironically meant to mirror the Martian landscape. The astronauts were trained to survive a landing there. Now they are surviving the Earth equivalent.

    Capricorn One was a Harbinger film. It would not be made today. The airplane copter chase was airtight. The phenomenal soundtrack was ignored at Oscar time. . The movie... survives.

    Nice retro review there. Too bad Hollywood today does not make movies like Capricorn One.

    I've tried to look this up. No man has stepped on Mars yet except in the movies.. The film Species 2 could be the one in 1998. And the first words by astronaut Patrick Ross were: "Not for one nation...not for one people...not for one creed...but for all humankind.", That adventure didn't end well though. Check out the Peter Hyams film of 2005 Sound of Thunder.. That film tells us that Brubaker was first on Mars.. What would I say if I ever get the chance to speak the first words on a new world? I would quote Buzz Aldrin (the second man on the Moon): "Beautiful view". What more can you say really? And that would give worth to all the brave men, first or last, out in space..

    One big plothole: WHY didnt Dr. Kelloway simply let the astronauts go into space and be killed by the life support, then fake the Mars landing with actors in space suits/recordings of astronaut voices from the training? I mean since he never intended releasing the astronauts anyways.

    • @ReelClassicFilmReviews
      @ReelClassicFilmReviews  Před 4 měsíci

      That is a great question… 🤔 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@ReelClassicFilmReviews Also the missing NASA technician, well, didn't the guy have parents or siblings that the reporter could call? Or wouldn't any of the other apartment tenants know him? I mean c'mon! Anyways, Dr. Kelloway's last part of the charade-fixing it so the ship is "accidentally" destroyed upon coming back to Earth...uh....wouldn't that mishap alone prevent Congress from wanting fund any more space missions? Dr. Kelloway made it look like NASA builds ship's without any heat shielding! Congress would pull the plug on the space programm if they thought that the first astronauts on Mars were blown up by a faulty space ship, so Dr. Kelloway's plan for his hoax to keep the space missions funded makes no sense if he also fakes an accident blowing up the space ship.

    OK movie overall but can the clue Elliot Gould gets to piece everything together be more obvious? Brenda Vaccao shows him a home movie of a movie being shot and says her husband made a comment on how it all looked so real? Also, it's amusing watching these movies from the 70s seeing actors play astronauts with long hair

    Why does Elliott Gould get tipped off when he hears Brubaker mention his trip to Yosemite to his wife during that fake interview? That doesn't really make sense, there would have been nothing odd about that.

    • @nicholasjanke3476
      @nicholasjanke3476 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Well it's odd that a guy supposedly on a space mission would mention a holiday in Yosemite.

  • @benkasminbullock
    @benkasminbullock Před rokem +2

    The car going out of control sequence isn't too great, and they don't seem to have very much room in the spacecraft for a months-long mission to Mars, and the lunar lander seems a bit silly on Mars.
    But the most incongruous scene is the one where Sam Waterstone climbs right to the top of the cliff only to find the helicopters are already there. How was it possible that he didn't hear them? Why didn't he just walk around the cliff instead of climbing it?
    Why is OJ Simpson so dehydrated after only a few hours of walking?

    • @ReelClassicFilmReviews
      @ReelClassicFilmReviews  Před rokem +2

      Agree with all of you points! 🙌
      However when your movie culminates in Telly Savalas piloting a crop duster, with Elliot Gould as co pilot and with James Brolin hanging off the wing AND outmanoeuvring two military helicopters, anything’s possible! 🙈😂

    • @tech5298
      @tech5298 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I remember seeing those helicopters sitting there when he looked up, and how chilling that scene was. He just had a sense of hopelessness and despair. It was a good scene.

    The escaped because they realized they were going to be killed because the actual ship was destroyed on re-entry. No ship, no astronauts.

    Hi Steven,
    I have seen “Capricorn One” late night one time on ITV back in the day & quite enjoying it & it also reminded of the original “Planet of the apes” with Charlton Heston in a few scenes.
    A impressive cast & it’s one I would revisit even though I don’t a physical copy, fine review as always 😎👍

    If they remake this, it would be have to be alot tighter and intricate. They got away with so much in the original which today’s tech wouldn’t permit.

    • @ReelClassicFilmReviews
      @ReelClassicFilmReviews  Před rokem +2

      Totally agree, it would be interesting to see how quickly the events in this film would be tied up with the use of some modern tech! There's so many older movies that would be completely different just with the inclusion of a mobile phone! haha! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment. Very much appreciated.
