it's fascinating to see how fast the aroid trends come and go. after the variegated spiritus was created, the Philodendron market crashed. we're starting to see the anthurium market sag. and now variegated alocasias are on track to TAKE OVER in 2024
Already took over in 2023 😂
@@phila87 not quite in the US since many of them are still in thailand and at ludicrous prices. Once they become more available everyone will have them in IG
🎯🎯🎯
Big Philos, Anthuriums, Monstera, etc, look amazing in people’s homes. Most of Variegated Alocasias will never look that good.
@@petermurdoch7540plussss they have to be kept in cabinets in so many zones for them to thrive. I still love my monsteras and philodendrons because I can put them all over the house and they aren’t very picky!
I only recently found this channel and I must say, THIS is the type of plant content I was looking for. I love all the pertinent information, especially in the documentary type videos. All of this is the kind of stuff that gets me fired up for my plants.
Damn this makes my night! Thank you for the kind words 🙌
Amazonica is rhe hybrid name. polly and bambino are both amazonica varieties. there is an original amazonica with even larger leabes.
I just watched a video on another channel about a large collection of variegated Alocasia. The owner said the ones from TC revert pretty quickly. I believe her because she’s been growing them successfully for many years & has invested thousands in her collection.
The extra info about the patents was very interesting
I considered cutting this part but glad someone else found it interesting 😄
Love seeing the variety.
I also dig that you shared prices and sources.
My plants bring me so much joy but there’s only so much time available to spend on plant stuff. I would have spent many hours trying to gather all this information, this is so much better.
Don’t sweat the comments about how you pronounce some words. We all have some words that we struggle with. I have to think vast majority of plant people struggle too. I find that I think I know how to say some names only to find when I try, I struggle.
I resisted falling in love with variegation for a long time but goodness, the variation variegation adds to the equation does add another level of interest for me.
You always have super kind words. And tonight I needed that! I just can’t get Alocasia right 😂
Appreciate the thoughtfulness 🙌
Great vid! Looking fwd to the next!
One of the first big plants I bought was an alocasia from Lidl. First I had issues that none of my alos had more than 3 leafs.
Now when they get aquarium water with pH perfect SensiGrow A+B and growing in Lechuza my all alos have 6-7 good size leafs year around, even during winter in dry and cool room temperature.
Same here, I have 13 leaves on my amazonica combined ( they are in one pot), but they are in aroid mix.
You’re a real one! ☝️
🙌
Oh my word. My head is spinning in the best varigated plant way ever! 😊❤😮
The quilted dreams is the only one I own so far probably the only one I ever will own just because I don't want to potentially introduce bugs that these guys are prone to, but I love my one and she is the only plant I keep in my bedroom
So ready to go on this new plant journey with you! As long as there’s a how to video and the right fertilizer in stock I’m there- starting to get bored of the starter plants and ready for new challenges 💪🥳
Alocasias are great. I find them very easy and happily growing in Lechuza pon with Lechuza slow-release fertiliser semi-hydroponically with self-watering reservoir. Their roots grow really well in it and they can keep a lot of leaves thanks to it. My Silver Dragon is having it´s 11th leaf now. They don´t go dormant for me in European winters. I never had spidermites on my alocasias yet (they stay busy on my calatheas instead, I guess :-D ). 60 % humidity, light from the top, no grow light, no cabinets. I find the pon & self-watering the key to success🙂
Sinuata is listed as critically endangered in its original habitat, I have read.
excellent information. Thank you for sharing. :P
Awesome video; thanks for doing the research & sharing!
Thanks Carol!! 😄
You da man Chris..garnered a lot from this segment brother! Mahalo to you 🤙🏽
Thank you for checking out the vid!! Hope you Joepii is strong 🙌
Love Alocasia everyth8ng!
Great Video, I have a love hate relationship with Alocasia my self, one thing for sure that I have learn while killing many is that alocasia care cannot be generalize, everything from light, water and humidity needs are very different sometimes opposite from different varieties. Thank You
I've never been able to grow alocasia or anthurium. Colocasia and xanthosoma do well in the yard. Philodendron and syngoniums are my favorites because they are easy to grow in the yard or as houseplants.
Fantastic.
I have a full albo one and it’s really nice and somehow I’m keeping alive… so far.
I have an Odora Silver that is really gorgeous. I’ve never seen such striped variegated petioles on any plant.
The TC aspect of it is exciting and some are really pretty. I love the green on green variegation the best. The lighter variegation is not for me as it looks sick. But I can see the attraction, it seems for a hybridizer the sky is the limit💚
I'm so happy you changed the way you pronounce Alocasia. 💕
😂😅
I don't know anyone who pronounces alocasia with a hard 's.' But i dig it! Much fancier! And also, ty for this video!
I've only ever heard it pronounced alo-kay-shuh /alo-kay-shah, without the hard "sia" sound like you said!
I always silently corrected the other pronunciation to myself on these videos, but never commented about it because I always worry about coming across badly even if its intended well 😅
Hahahahhaha I’m tryinggggg
@@ThatGirlShelbyy😌
@@prettyingreen oh, you have the best pronunciations of everything. You do you!
@@prettyingreen in college, I kept pronouncing zealot "zee-lot." My professor looked at me like I was an idiot and he was from Zimbabwe with a heavy accent. I will never forget that shame. 😆😆😆
Every time I hear the big prices, I think of the amount of other nice plants I could get for that haha. I get 100% why people hunt these down, I am here enjoying all the unique beauty but my wallet simply does not allow me to spend triple of quadruple digits
Ohhh i have a gorg momma aurea zebrina , pink bambino , and sooo many more. Im obsessed
If I can keep them Alive I’m all game 😂😂 I’m going Pon all day with these!
This is how Alocasia is properly pronounced a•luh•kay•zhuh
GREAT Vlog!!! I bought a Dawn just over a year ago. You are the only youtuber that has ever mentioned it. (sorry, Dawn but...) I think with the potting medium, it was set up to fail with root rot. I put the whole plant in an expensive big lachuza pot with pon. To late. I was able to get three corms that are now almost as big and beautiful as the original! Question, The California Alocasia.... It really looks like the Dawn? Oh, I'm So Colo with sometimes single digit humidity. My Dawn lives near my 10 gl fish tank under a grow light and seems happy. still pushing growth.
Love these! My second favorite genius. Finished moving my collection into Pon, so the adventure continues. Got a lot of corms, so let the propagation begin!
Please stop showing me those variegated Jackie’s! It just keeps calling me. 😂
Curious, do you have a SWAG at what percentage of corms thrown off from a variegated plant will produce a variegated? It seems buying corms is like a lottery, but maybe I’m wrong on this and percentage is high?
When I get my next inflows, I would love to hybridize an Azlani with a Melo. That color on a Melo texture leaf. 🤩
I'm excited for variegated alocasia price drops with TC. I too have my alocasia in self watering pots and ambient humidity. But i'm in the semi tropics so it really depends where you are. And yes, that cuprea hates it life with the other alocasia. drama plant. 🤣
Loving your videos. Can you make a video on how to air layer plants especially for monstera. Please. Love from Malaysia 😊🌱
He has some sorts and maybe a full video explaining air layering if you go back.
@@plantypittsburgh will browse through. Thanks for the heads up
ELEPHANT EAR VARS ARE JUST FAVORITE! THEY GET SO HUGE.
I HAVE MOST!🥰 JUST NOT THE PURPLE BLACK ONE.
I found a variegated weed in my garden. Never figured out what it was, but I dug it up and tried to grow it indoors (I’m in a very cold winter climate, so it would’ve died outdoors)
Also, my silver dragon has 10+ leaves! I’ll try to remember to count 😅
Love the look of them but really hate pests!! They are beautiful!!
Agreed!
I am so stoked , I got a Bambino & Dragon scale for $4.99 each at trader Joe's!
This is a great video, thank you !
I'm obsessed with Alocaceas!🥰♥️
Use a few drops of dish soap in a sprayer for spider mites control.
That’s incredible!!! I’m jelly! Which metro are you in??
@@prettyingreen I'm in the US, Cal.
Trader Joe's has a little tiny plant section & they sell everything that gets put on the shelves. They respect the plants unlike Walmart..
I've had many of these for a long time, guess I was ahead. of time, haha. They're pest magnets though. Especially my Silver Dragon.
I love your videos. When you get the varigated alocasia please let me know!
We will!
My regular regal shield is left outside zone 7b and it comes back every year. Even after last years freezing swampy winter. I wonder if a variegated one will do the same🧐
I've been following Zac on IG. Love his contents. Variegated bambino are price around S$30-S$40 here in Singapore. Love the maharani 😍
I found a very well variegated ninja alocasia at Walmart. I wish you would have mentioned it in your video.I can’t Find hardly anything about it online
Do you have any tips for growing alocasia tissue culture? I have grown plenty of monsteras but struggling with alocasia TCs. Tried a variety of mediums.
The thing about alocasia is once they are stable they are fine. Keep them in semi-hydro with a reservoir and they will be good, they like water. But if the stem starts rotting, its game over.
Nairobi night is not part of Baginda.
There's no Nobilis anymore. What you've shown is a Sanderiana.
Where does the Odora variegata come in on the guide? I've always been confused between the odora vs macrorrhiza. Also confused with difference between odora variegata and an an okinawa silver
@prettyingreen have you heard/seen the alocasia green unicorn? It's a hybrid between the Azalanii & the dragon scale
I haven’t yet!! But there’s probably some gorgeous hybrids
Im from Pr and i say it like the way you say it other people say it alocashea it sound like i wrote it lol
Dawn isn't macrorrhizos species....
Is the variegation guaranteed to show up in their corms?
No
Heheh, I doubt it’s actual Walmart selling the $150+ plant-they have a marketplace, like Amazon, so various businesses sell their stuff on the site/app. If you look in the details it says “shipped from x, sold by y” and it’s usually some random company name.
Also-unpopular opinion, I think some variegations of alocasia look ill. The frydek looks cool, but some of the ones with the yellowy variegation-and especially when they are still very young plants-they just look sickly to me.
Additionally, I treat most of my alocasia like calathea and they love it.
Not all Alocasias are tropical. There are native subtropical ones where I live.
Correct 👍
I always have such issues keeping Alocasia alive, much more so than philos or hoyas :(
Same! They are finicky for sure
Are you sure that’s how you pronounce alocasia?
He pronounces many things....differently 😅
Hahahahaa NOPE 😂
@@prettyingreenI love how you pronounce stuff!!
Think of it in these terms, you don’t pronounce the L in salmon. You don’t pronounce the I in Alocasia. AL-OH-CAY-SUH. Hope that helps 😆
I’ll get it in a couple years 😅
Alocasia are so easy to grow and the corms will pay for the price of the plant. Tc are coming but they take a long time to size up and the variegation is not stable. Get ready for some full moons.
Who corrected your pronounciation of alocasia? They're wrong! lol It is [al oh kay zhuh] with a Z sound, not the soft S.
i'm kind of sick of all the variegated plant trend to be honest.
What's your fave genus right now?
