- Return of the Mangroves follows the Mangrove Action Project (MAP) team to El Salvador to assess the health of mangroves in the Bay of Jiquilisco. MAP Co-Founder Alfredo Quarto and Jim Enright return to the bay 12 years after they conducted a mangrove restoration training, and with the help of Dr Laura Michie discover the impact of the training on the local people and the mangroves of the bay.

The Bay of Jiquilisco, located on the Pacific coast of El Salvador, is home to one of the largest and most diverse mangrove forests in Central America. The mangroves in the bay cover approximately 25,000 hectares and are critical to the health of the bay’s ecosystem, as well as the well-being of the local communities. Despite their importance, the mangroves in the bay are still under threat.

This documentary was produced in cooperation with the German non-profit organization SALZWASSER e.V. The environmental organization is committed to the protection of mangrove forests as well as the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems, with a focus on international blue carbon projects. Salzwasser also offers and hosts events, workshops and educational programs for children and adults in Germany, and is a voice for the conservation and restoration of the Earth’s marine ecosystems.
