whoever had the idea of building up the singer and the having the waitress as the actual protagonist needs a raise. It was so effective!
Ikr! Brilliant.

"Bread."
Thank you for the genuine laugh.
Well, technically they play Baguette.

Let's talk about the brilliant camera man!
Lets talk about how thats NOT one take
I only saw about two or three possible hidden cuts

It's April 5, 2020, we're all in quarantine and THIS is what we all need.
we all need to not stop believin'?
@@drakedarkstar5422 you're right
2021 Jan, still
Doesn't matter if it's 2020 or 202020, this is what we need regardless. Don't ever stop believin'
Now May 2021 and still need.
LOL at all the people complaining because it was audio dubbed. How exactly do you people think music videos are made? This would literally be impossible to sound like a studio when you're moving through a house. Footsteps, background actors, random farts, etc. Not to mention the artists are constantly running around when off camera to get in the next position. They'd be out of breath and sound like crap.
Just shutup and enjoy the song already. God almighty.... At least Scott is trying new stuff. For a first time, this was phenomenal. If you're looking for more one-shot videos Kurt Hugo Schneider is a master at the technique, and yep, he dubs too.
Can we also talk about how Sara Niemietz absolutely killed it in this song? I insta-subscribed to her channel because of it.
RadicalScotsman FFS, listen to the song and don't look at the screen if the performance bothers you that fucking much, Jesus fucking Christ... you people will literally complain about anything, won't you?
The main reason I subscribe and watch PMJ videos is because they are real, and NOT lip syncing. If people want to express their opinion on what makes PMJ great, they can do that without out you LOL at them. Produced Videos and lip syncing is not where I want to see PMJ go.
You can always go watch the other 300 PMJ videos that are done with live sound and let people enjoy things.
PMJ is full of insanely creative people, they don't always want to do the same thing over and over, that's what makes them great.
+Bruce. Will do that. But I am expressing my opinion, that this is NOT the direction I wan't to see PMJ go. Is it OK with you if I express my opinion?
I just laughed at the random fart XD
This was posted the day before my Birthday. Didn't get any presents from anyone but this is the greatest gift of all.

You would not expect a violin solo to fit into a piece like this so seamlessly.
Five years later, this still puts a smile on my face. Thank you!
Ain't no party like a Gatsby party cuz a Gatsby party don't stop until at least two people are dead and everyone is disillusioned with the jazz age as a whole.

people today dislike anything that isn't seen to use a super computer or requires actual talent to play, at least that's my best guess.
@Ethan H. Lol, love this comment. Nearly snorted my coffee out my nose! XD
@noi Med
That's what I love about PMJ and this internet age of music. Both have caused a huge resurgence in interest for Jazz. Even the radio is starting to get songs with that retro flavor, including Jazz. PMJ has revolutionized modern music and I love them for it.
Whoever filmed it is amazing. The lighting, the style, the lens, the vibe, everything is perfect. You've done better covers for sure, but just the filmography part of this video deserves to be applauded. Amazing

The continuity of the shot, simply amazing!!
in a single take boi, that's sure makin me surprised

How did they pull that off? Amazing video.
I live in a small town in Argentina, it's Sunday afternoon, almost night. I can't stop commenting about how wonderful this video is for me, that I enjoyed it very much, and that I am very grateful to them. I am sure that with beauties like this I will survive.
My favorite thing in this video may be the random musicians just hanging out around this party. Like "Ope! There's the horn section just in the corner for some reason!" So fun! Loved it!
Yes, it reminds me Sixpence's Breathe Your Name, the wonderfully wacky random people just passing through.
Nice sweeping camera. Thanks for taking me on a musical whimsical adventure!!!
Rebecca Vocal Athlete I could tell where the edit points are but it still works. The only thing I noticed is that some shots were done during the day and some at night.
@@fatheroffab Jesus Jim I bet you're fun at parties :/

Scott Bradlee could probably write a kickass musical if he wanted
And he already has the cast figured out too ...
I would give my life to see a PMJ Musical.
I would watch the hell out of that musical.
Danny Kopp Hope he will someday tbh
SO TRUUUE
This is fresh. I love the one take camera shots. Just one camera following all the scenes. No cuts. All in one take.
Except there are cuts. So called one takes are never one takes. It's cleverly hidden cuts in editing that make you think that it's one cut, while in reality it's bunch of 10-20 second takes stitched up together to make it look like a one take. Whenever there is something covering the screen from bottom to the top (Even if sides are not covered) there is a hidden cut, when camera passes by something like at 00:34 the wall without any moving elements, than again at 00:45 wall again (this one is super obvious), than 01:01 man's back etc. Nontheless top notch cinematography and editing.
Marko Todorovic I get what you mean and I agree. Those non movable objects like the wall can transition to a different scene.
@@markotodorovic7013 DOP Clint Byrne says on the Blackmagic Design website (a BMD camera was used): “We initially had a backup plan of using cut points which we had inserted in the choreography but in the end, we didn’t need to use them. Once we started shooting and saw everything in motion, we realized that it would be possible to do it as a real one take and that we could achieve our goal. We couldn’t be happier with the end result." It took the crew 17 takes!
The tricks you mentioned were used e. g. in Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope". They had to do that as the camera couldn't hold enough film stock to shoot the entire film in one go.
@@axelvetter Well they are used to this day in modern so called one takes.
But it is really suprising that this is areal one take. Because there is so many moments in which it appears like there is a hidden cut.
@@markotodorovic7013 Also 3:11. The camera movement is super unnatural as it focuses in on the dancer's face and then pans back out to the tapdancing. If it is a true one-take, it might just be some strange editing because there is definitely some digital zoom/movement there
Okay, how did I not find this video until TODAY.
SAME! :D
Seriously. Same. For me, 2024. wtf, how did i miss this?
This is so great, like a mini-movie but instead of interrupting it, the song was part of the plot.
Beleive me i really don't want to be that guy but. You mean like how it is in a musical?
Yes!!! So glad you guys are loving it. This was such a fun day to shoot. Much love to my PMJ family and all you fans out there.
Please, more. I want more.
Be honest. How many takes did it take?
You were one of the biggest highlights of a video crammed with highlights. Such a killer voice.
PMJ always finds a way to surprise me in their twist of how the original piece sounded and the twist works! Beautiful camera work and top shelf musicianship.
Props to the man who can handle a Steve Perry high note and make it sound easy. I've been a fan of Journey since the days when their music was in in the Top Ten, and Postmodern Jukebox does them proud.

Great video but I gotta make sure I never hire that catering company! Their waiters are terrible!! 😜😜😜
Congrats to my friends in this video- you guys are awesome.
Yeah - what's with the singing staff? ;) They never get anything done!
One of the perils of living in a world that runs on Broadway musical rules, I guess. The music takes them and they're just gone for the next two or three minutes, and no amount of yelling or screaming will be audible.
but you have to admit they are great singers, i love the first singer's voice she is HOT, yes i know it is you Sara
With such a wonderful voice as you have Sara, I am sure people would be glad to go hungry :)
The waiters are awesome! This video should win awards, it's top class!
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this - it’s so much fun.
The guy’s face when he received his cigarette drink, also the chef is an entire mood 😂
The most amazing piece of storytelling. I love how it just flowed from scene to scene. You know it's dubbed because it's impossible for it not to have been but you still end up almost believing that you've walked through this amazing party where this song was being perfectly performed by everyone.
Also the guy is singing while drinking...
@@kylepfeffer7008 It's a rare talent. 😉
@@mooniejohnson ".... Clayface!"

If you guys do something like this again, a cool twist might be to show the progression through classic music styles as the song goes on and on. And therefore also visuals and perhaps environment. Just a thought. But seriously, WELL DONE!!!
Sooooo behind this idea
Another vote for this!
You do realize this was all done on one take, yes? If they do another one-take video they could do, at the most, the style changes musically (like the evolution of Pop music video done by Pentatonix as an example). To change set design and wardrobes would defeat the purpose of the "one-take" challenge though (in my opinion).
Randy Smith It might not meet the "one take" challenge, but it still would be a great concept, especially with PMJ doing it.
Randy Smith you’d be amazed at how quick a costume change can be done. Not one person was in the shot the entire time, once they were off camera, they do a quick change.
I've just discovered this channel this week. These covers are the best!
Welcome to Postmodern Jukebox crew!!
Took don’t stop believing, and made it VINTAGE
Plus the music video, I’m gonna explode!
how does one make a song this good?
Solid 50s song 👌
I don't care what version or style this song is in, I love it. Also one hell of a video
I'd be honored if some fans of classic 80s rock anthems would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of EYE OF THE TIGER by Survivor, PURPLE RAIN by Prince, and AGAINST ALL ODDS by Phil Collins on my YT channel in tribute to the era of legendary power ballads. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks & keep on rocking.
Well all apart from glee
I love how at 2:28 you can see the brass guys running to get in place at the end
This is so far the most touching video with the jazz cover I have ever watched ❤
The second Sara walked out, my day was made...but this video overall is amazing...I've probably watched it thirty times in the week since it was released. Totally flawless...

Amazing to see Scott come from a little apartment with a keyboard and a couple of friends to a big fancy house with multiple published albums and sold out tours.
Still really amazed at how perfect and transcendent this is.
I thought this was amazing - sorry that some folks can't appreciate all that went into making this so great.
This Thanksgiving I'm thankful for Postmodern Jukebox

Still amazes me just to hear the very few seconds (and then every other second of this)! Man, this video deserves way more "likes".
This is reminding me of the wonderful times I was believing! And for a brief moment, I remembered, no, I've felt it and live it again!
Terrible catering! The cook burned the food, one of the servers kept pulling the food tray away before people could get food, and another one PUT OUT THEIR CIGARETTE IN SOMEBODY'S DRINK! NONE of them were wearing gloves, which is SUPER unsanitary, and they kept switching people's drinks around when they weren't looking! And finally, they just straight-up WALKED off the job to have a dance party in OUR back yard!
1/5 Would Not Recommend
LOL. Great comment.
But just because I'm a smartass:
Wearing gloves is often much more unsanitary then not wearing them. Bare hands are fine if they are washed regularly and properly. But most people stop washing their hands/gloves because they think that gloves are sanitary anyway. So it's often worse with gloves.
Yeah, but you're the ones who gave away the fact that it wasn't all done in one magnificent take. I was getting all Hitchcock for a while, until y'all decided to dress like Scott.
You forgot the using hands to move food from one tray to the other, after rubbing food over her face!
Chiungalla79 . . . Yes! I've been complaining about that for years. People are less careful where they put their hands when they wear gloves. They don't feel the gunk collecting on the glove, like they would their hands. Subway, even though I'm not a fan of the food, does it right. New gloves for every sandwhich.
And they kept ignoring the guests and singing the whole time. It's hard to find good workers nowadays. *harumph*

Now that's call back...
I've seen this video a million times and had never noticed this, thank you, you made my day!
I loved the mansion. It made for so many great sets.
I'm a simple man. I see one take on a music video of a song I really enjoy. I like
Amazing, amazing job. Blake Lewis is an added bonus.
I didn't read the "one take" part in the title and whenever she walked in and the camera started following her, I was shook
Haha i think that was the intended effect.
@@ClintByrne It's not really one take. The editing seams are evident if one knows where to look. It's still an impressive piece.
Robb Reel haha that's funny I shot it we actually choreographed points if we needed to cut but this was the final take and outside of a digital zoom it was all one long take. Source: me I carried the camera, lit the rooms, and sang along the whole time. PMJ is super talanted
@@ClintByrne I am not doubting the incredible talent, nor that each take was one long shot, but no amount of insistence will convince me that it's a single, unedited take when I can see the seams.
Robb Reel I totally understand because we choreographed places (doorway, back-wipe, doorway, curtain) we could cut but in the end there weren't any!
Personally I would have liked one more take because as the DP/cam op I can see all the times the Movi was fighting me and some other technical details, but the dancers, extras, band, singers were working really hard and I was relieved when the director called a wrap.
However due to time constraints and fear that it wouldn't work during the planning we had to have cut points as a backup plan.
In the end we did 17.5 takes and they used the last one, I get why you think there are cute because we planned it but luckily we had everything workout so we could use one take which was always my goal because I love real one takes.
I want to do another one like this with the band in the future tho we learned a lot doing this. And they keep putting out inspiring new songs.
Rehearse - don’t practice ‘til you get it right - practice til you can’t get it wrong - superb, we’ll done everybody!

Bravo!! Having worked in Film and Music, I have to say this Moves me. Just had to put in the comments how much I absolutely loved how it looked like the singer was gonna be the main focus, all before cutting to the small town girl. The cinematography is excellent, too, and the vocals and instrumentals all go without saying.

I really enjoy that Scott Bradlee has very little ego. This video is the only one I've seen that focuses on him and only for a second.
