Watch the BBC first on iPlayer đ bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Documentary that explores the work of Jordan Peele, an era-defining horror auteur, incisive social critic and influential media mogul. Peele, who started out as a comedian with sketch show Key & Peele, captured the zeitgeist with his Oscar-winning horror Get Out, a film that showcased his deft balance of horror, comedy and social commentary. Peele is also an executive producer on TV shows ranging from a revamped Twilight Zone to Lovecraft Country.
In this profile documentary, Inside Cinema traces Peeleâs career as a comedian, film-maker and producer, in both film and television, and explores how a lifelong love for the horror genre has informed his inimitable style.
2017's Get Out may have been Peele's directorial debut, but it showcased perfectly his expert combination of classic genre thrills and smart political satire, tackling post-racial liberalism head-on, while finding the space where comedy becomes scary and horror becomes funny. His 2019 follow-up, the doppelganger horror Us, mined one of horror fictionâs most fertile conventions, the deep-rooted Freudian fear of a figure that looks just like you but isnât, and centred on an elastic, elusive metaphor that struck right at the heart of American society.
Written and narrated by Ellen E Jones, film, TV writer and columnist for The Guardian, the documentary argues that while Peele is a modern master of horror, comedy and social commentary, the true power of his films rises from an awareness of genre and audience expectations

I always knew him only as a comedian, but when I realized that "Get Out" and "Us" were by Jordan Peele himself, I was astonished.
Me too bro.
Getout was amazing.
US had lot of unexplained things which was annoying.
@@SB-od9sl thats what made us good imo
Same here man
Me too dude
"if you understand comedy then you'll master horror"
Yeah sure lmao
"then when you master horror ,you'll master comedy"
@subhuman janitor true.
@@anchoredsea Yep.Example: director of Shazam
@@anchoredsea If you duck up horror, you will create comedy for sure
Jordan Peele is a living genius.
Expect for the movie US. That movie sucked
@@DunkIeosteus I agree. Us was boring. Something a movie that is presented as a horror movie shouldn't be.
@@DunkIeosteus If you're not really intelligent, you wouldn't get how deep and thoughtful it was. It's entertaining and smart. That's a problem for the Tethered
@@lf1496 bruh I get the idea for this film. But he failed to properly execute it. The film was flat out boring
He's a film genius no doubt..I can't get enough of their skits
Have you watched Us
This was a really well spoken and written look at Peeleâs work. Look forward to more of this type of video.
Heâs a master of characters and layers.
Oh then he should direct the Shrek remake
So you are telling me the same comedian (peele) from key and peele directs amazing horror movies ?
What a talented and hard working guy.
Jordan Peele should revive Tales from the Hood. He would eat that up, Jordan Peele would also make a great Mr. Simms.
Noooo
I was never into suspense/horror until I watched Jordan peeles movies.
I was shocked when I realized "Us" was directed by him because i only knew him from comedy. I love the fact he is providing so many lead roles for dark skinned black people in a world so full of racism and colorism. He really is opening doors left and right in many aspects.
@Robo Redneck Get Out is legit good though
@Robo Redneck Jordan Peele reignited my love horror genre. The saturation of crappy Hollywood white young lead, is now officially a dead horse. The fact they need to remake Asian horror movies or get non-white directors to breath life into shitty white leads proofs people need break. I for one I'm glad Peele isn't planning to have white lead, GOOD. We have plenty of white more famous directors that never had back leads, and many have double digit feature films, under their belts, with not a single black lead. Yet, people expect Peele to have one right after his 1st movie. The sheer Caucasity of it.
@Robo Redneck yeah, you are nitpicking.
@@Pikachu_0690 canât lie bro it just kinda sounds like you hate white people, you really coulda phrased this better
Hey, anyone who hasn't seen the new twilight zone. Usually when you don't have the original host, it doesn't feel the same. Jordan Peele probably does it better. I'm glad he is banging out stuff now of days.
You really just said that? I like the reboot with peels but itâs not touching the og twilight zone or rod serlingâs performanceâŠ
Sometimes I genuinely feel Jordan Peele is the funniest man on earth.
Not the funniest. Unless hes with keagan, then they are unstoppable
He's a genius.
I wouldnât go that far
This was very well done, Jordan Peele is my favourite director â€ïžâ€ïž creates masterpieces within our time
Is it illegal tho
All his movies have been fire not to mention his remake of the twilight zone was so good.genuis.
He only hosted and executive produced it much like Lovecraft Country or Candyman. Real Peele touch is in his movies.
I love the idea of releasing more social thrillers. He is very in tuned with his audience and the commentary his films make on society are spot-on
Little Dot studios always does justice. Love it!
Nods to the piece on Disney villains too. The comments should be turned back on.
The commentary is on point
What a magnificent video thanks inside cinema, Jordan peele awesome
Absolutely brilliant!!! đ
When I realized that Jordan Peele was the "Key and Peele" Jordan Peele I was shook
I mean the entire reason horror as a genre was created was to discuss impactful societal themes so I'm glad he brought meaning back into horror films
@Robo Redneck Invisible!??????? Lol okay.
@Robo Redneck it's only invisible if you are not affected by it and do not care about it. Keep your eyes closed and continue living in your bubble.
@@CoffeeHolicxx This dude is commenting on everyone with Peele hate. I'm guessing over no white lead thing, closeted racist were asking right after Get Out. Which is funny cause non of this directors that have over 10-20+ movies ever had a black lead; Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, JJ Abrams, Wes Anderson, etc.
There used to be a very dark comedy series when I was a kid called âThe league of gentlemenâ always felt that Peele would fit in really well with the guys who made the show.
What an excellent video, love the voice of the last speaking too.
When the red and blue lights go off there was an audible gasp in the theaters at both showing I went to.
Yo when he said " what dimension are you even in?" I fucken hollered at his amurk
Would of been good if you interviewed him!
Peele needs to direct the Gargoyles movie. I don't care what disney say.
Nah, he should continue to direct movies with black actors and black experience horror or sci-fi, and never go down the Shyamalan route.

"...whether to laugh or cry?" Very real indeed
Yes, "Rosemary's baby", is my favorite too!
Jus a minute after uploaded. And I am here for Jordan Peele
Very good
Life is horror we need more comedy not less.
A genius of entertainment.
My fav director tbh
I remember when I saw Jordan in ERB lmao
I saw him on Mad TV, Key & Peele and ERB.
He deserves it a lot great job
Clever progression đđ»
wtf? I've known Peele from Key and Peele sketches for comedy and now I found him as a Director from Nope and Get out which I just watched recently. My mind is blown holy sht
No mention of mad TV

The moral of every Peele film is âStay away from the skinny white women.â

Jordan Peele should direct DC movies... It's also dark...

At least the British are honest about the white savior archetype's appeal to the Academy.
Because they invented it.
I wish he makes more movies like these

Good Video!
Jordan Peele is a cinematic genius. Switching from comedy to horror which are two totally different genres and do it masterfully. I love all his horror films this far and look forward to his latest one NOPE!
Bro, the fact that the movie was seen as a comedy was so wackk
Jordan's films all have an element of truth to them. It shows racism still exists today and it will never be changed, the bame community will continue to rise above this issue in order to overcome white supremacy.
What is bame?
A Real Londoner youâre chatting absolute bollocks mate
@@ITzPoWeRzZ really by race swapping and wokeness looks like white supremacy is dying
Best director of our generation I love peele
He fucked up Candy Man, but Us and Get Out were very enjoyable to watch.
He didn't write or direct the totality of Candyman;
Win Rosenfeld and Nia DaCosta had creative liberty with the screenplay, same goes for twilight zone he lead his voice only and Lovecraft country his name...ignorance is not bliss, just accepted stupidity
Lol gimme a break! đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
This is a fuckin awesome moviess
It was okay..but come on
De
Peele is overrated in my opinion. Get out was better than Us. Iâm excited to see his next film Nope. Iâm a sucker for extraterrestrial films though.
Slowly and steady we are witnessing the birth of the new Steven king of the next generation, Jordan Peele , absolute mind freak of a director.
.
um, alfred hitchcock, stephen king, twilight zone in the 70s defined horror.. yall are "defining" your possessions
And he redefined it. Horror hasnât been static since the 70âs, in case you havenât noticed
Further to the themes explored include the casting of non-African American leads (Daniel Kaluuya and Lupita Nyong'o) in the roles of African Americans giving a global dimension in Get Out and Us. Both were great in the roles, but I wonder whether those films would have had a different voice if the leads weren't foreigners but actually African Americans. Its interesting that no one ever pointed that out about Jordan Peele's casting strategy given his films focus on race and class. Was the casting of foreigners deliberate or were Daniel and Lupita the best choices? I guess that will be something that Mr Peele will never reveal and it will go down in history as a source of conjecture.
No he didnt
He redefined it as "wypipo oppressing blacpipo". Such redefinition.
That is the truth though. History proves that true whether you accept it or not.
â@@riiraa881You're not oppressed, just slow...

Idk they kinda wack
Frankly o find his movies good, and there is some great scenes. But did redefined horror as a genre ? No Is he a genius of cinematography ? No. I find what he did in comedy actually better if there was a comparison. The problem being there was too little good horror movies these last 10 years...
Heâs good now but he gives me M Night vibes in anything heâll direct in the future
What makes you say that??
@@EboniFlowers Us didnât quite stick the landing with its twist. Some questions did need answering
@@davidlance5310 Like what?
"Get out" is a masterpiece, but "us" is trash.
Us is masterpiece, no twist, just pure fun entertaining horror of the other; the poor, foreigners or immigrants.
He's didn't pull an M Knight Shyamalan, and ignored all the sus comparison and did his on thing.
Sixth Sense was masterpiece, Unbreakable became garbage with the twist ending. Us is drastically different from Get Out. Sign of creative storyteller.
@@Pikachu_0690 Probably because I can't relate to the problems being covered in the movie. I can't stand the victimhood narratives. No offense.
@@alexanderkozlov9463 victimhood? Us is more about class status, and the gap between the haves and have not, and what happens when they revolt...You only see the black skin, inadvertently exposes your internal racism, buddy. I Don't expect anything less from white immigrant trying to pass as a real white American đBYE
â@@Pikachu_0690 I guess you have some emotional trauma that has something to do with immigrants. I am not an American my guy ;)

Utter nonsense.
Havenât seen get out but us is by no means any sort of masterpiece. Boring and predictable.

Aww, you anger racist
â@@Pikachu_0690No u
Jordan Peele is neither a proven talent nor is he yet a visionary.
Get out is a very racist movie. I thought we knew better todayâŠ..
I wonder if you think the plethora of Hollywood movies disproportionately showing Black people as drug dealers, aggressive, loud, dishonest, thieves, poorly educated, etc. whilst simultaneously showing White people as kind, honest, decent, saviors are racist too đ€
@@riiraa881 And you think thatâs justified making a racist movie like get out?? Thatâs what you expect from kid, but a adults like peel should know better.
It's called satirical horror. It's actually a mirror of today's society. What's the matter? You don't like your own reflection
@@dickhardpicard so you accept racist behaviour?
â@@riiraa881Nope, you're just actually actively racist. Funnily enough Peele was mocking your favorite type of racism in Get Out, and then went on to thrive on it. With mediocre nonsense. He should have stuck to comedy. Because he doesn't have talent in anything else. Clearly.
Sorry but Us was a terrible movie. His horror stuff really isnât that good. Lovecraft Country is better than anything he has ever done, and Misha Green is responsible for it. Donât get me wrong, heâs clever, but thatâs about it. Us really showed me heâs already out of ideas.
They are boring to a superficial viewer. I agree.
I thought Get Out was good. Us, not so much. Lupitaâs performance is the only thing I loved. I love her.
Us was good, definitely a step down from get out but c'mon
@@testing_something us was great people just hate because they didnât get the bigger picture
'get out' was great but 'us' was pretty boring and unlogical
Hes just a token for racists. He should have stuck to comedy, something he was good at.
overated
He has not redefined Horror films. I enjoy his movies but they are very standard Horror films.
Two very forgettable films that were, at best, average. How exactly would they "redefine horror films forever". Would you feel that way if they had been made by a white dude? Thought not...
overhype about this guy because he's black . lol don't get me wrong I saw all the movies and the show. but this is just because he's black. that's all.
Says the racist
@Robo Redneck I'm gonna call it like it is, you're racist plain and simple.
Nobody puts that much energy to commenting everywhere, so much negativity towards Peele. Either Peele fired you or you're racist. I'm betting its the latter.
Racist hate being called racist while doing racist shit.
He has redefined nothing.
One of the most overrated directors out there!
okay, racist
Overrated.
Peele is overrated.
âGet Outâ and âUsâ are, at best, decent films. Heâs certainly not deserving of all this outrageous critical acclaim.
Get a load of this guy
You are just wrong
Iâm guessing youâre a proper film critic then.
Dude is a tool, they just like to cary him for pushing that woke narative...ppl here actually compare him to Hitchcock...
@@easproductions1305 Iâve seen the films and thatâs my opinion, Get Out is interesting but flubs it in the final third and Us is a serviceable, but not mind blowing film.
