I thought the same, but setting up formation rules so they don't just collide takes a load of time and effort so I understand, though it wouldn't have mattered much if they 30 or so, about the total cost of the atlas, crashed repeatedly for simple exibition... Then again maybe he tried and the lag made it not up to his standards, which I admit as a pleb are often too high for my tastes(looking at you "honor rules").
Anyway, I'm just happy to get him back on ftd as in the end, ofc I ❤️ lath.

@@kleszczoros4885 lowest cram reload time is 9 secs say you have 6 crams in a circle. Meaning 1 cram can fire 6 times is a minute (as 9*6=54 seconds) now you have 6 barrels which puts the total rpm at 36. Which means basically a shot firing at about 1.5 seconds delay. Plus the spin block is an added complexity not to mention you need to put rotation speed along with the time period of 13.5 seconds (9*1.5) then the sequential fire is gonna be the hardest part because i dont know how to do it. 36 rpm is amazing for crams but ain't a minigun by a far shot

this being a lighter craft. make a "heavy" one that can go with the carrier too and make it have a true heavier advanced cannon. maybe it would make the carrier have a good "ground attacker". a carrier strike group would be cool

If you are keeping the “Good Guy” naming scheme from other campaigns you could call them the acolytes. They are belligerent and numerous.
Or Vampire/Leech/Mosquito. Khorne is a good guy and doesn't have anything against living and non-living beings consuming blood. He cares not if the blood flows into their stomachs or not, only that it flows! :P

Yeah I'm aware I did that - When I said "I don't know I will have to look that up" I meant to get them into that shape, was a bit of rushed talk and kinda glossed over the fact I found them, I would have continued to look quickly and cut the footage when I found them If not haha ^^

Ummmm. That’s doesn’t sound right as in Warhammer 40k (where Khorne is from) the Thundrhawk is a transport ship (and a boarding one). That’s why it doesn’t sound right (to me).

The steel striders planes truly are works of art! I think they use a combination of mimics and metal plates for their wings. I know there is one with spinblocked wings which tilt to turn the craft!
Also, because steam jets are technically pipes, you can connect them directly to boilers without a pipe between the boiler and the steam jet!

A fast firing, low punch gun:
Really only usefull against: planes, missiles (if it could track them), personel (not really a thing).
However it could also be used to destroy exposed things: Radars, AA guns, floating baloons, rotors. That is how it beat the big flier with 6 baloons: It knocked off the baloons and rotors (it might still loose if the enemy shoot back).
Against fliers with missiles, it's durability seems to have come down to being below the target. That way missiles were prone to overshoot. So what if you designed it to operate below the target? Top facing guns and armor. Important bits being more vulnerable from the bottom.
Slow speed might work best for this unit. High Speed jets would be mostly about minimizing the enemy firing window, wich is a good thing if both sides have missiles. However this thing is about sustained fire. So quick passes work against it.

You can have your carrier send ammunition, and energy to your fighters if you run them on electric engines, from anywhere on the battlefield! I made a carrier that holds 10 5k cost missile fighters, the sum of which can fight most of the WF. Thanks to this, I only need about 2000 ammo on the fighter itself if I want it to be able to handle half its resupply (the carrier can sustain all 10 fighters), and the thing rockets around at 70+ m/s with a single large jet.

this is one of the most fun episodes I've seen in a while! The dogfights are great.
I put one of those guns on a drone helicopter with a max range, low angle searchlight. At night, it was actually pretty cool watching the light sweep enemy ships - that is, until the drone just fell out of the sky from pitching too hard.

Hi Lathrix! Here's a small suggestion that I haven't had enough time to test out:
The steam jets allow faster and faster speed the higher you are (a vehicule that can do 100m/s at 300m easily gets to 800m/s at 1000m). You could use that to make a plane with a high reload time, that cruises at extreme speeds in space and dives once in a while to deliver its payload, before shooting back up to the safety of high altitude.
I've been trying to set up something like this with a direct feed custom canon with a 500mm, ridiculously long shell. The only problem is managing to set up the AI, because things have to be quite precise since you have a craft that dives at nearly 1000m/s.
Maybe you could give it a shot?

Love the FTD videos. I think the plane could definitely use a couple suplementy heavy weapons to break armor. Would also like to see an auto cannon variant
Hey Lath, would you mind doing a full-on tutorial series for literally everything you currently know about building in this game for 2020?? I just recently bought it and find myself not only struggling with the game itself but also that all the tutorials are out of date for the current version of the game. One of main things im having issues with are how to set up AI for Helicopter drones, and how to generally make things small enough to fit onto ships. I really enjoy your videos and you are the one that motivated me to get it.
For a different faction, but would be cool to see a close range laser weapon on maybe a bit heavier interceptor craft. Or just the regular simple lasers, as with the advanced cannons, most shots missed, while a laser should be able to hit a lot more.
Also would be really lovely to see multiple interceptors fight each other.
As a spam fighter it's brilliant! The only thing I would add is a top mounted weapon system, that way even if (as seen in the video) then enemy out climbs it, it will still be able to fire.
I wouldn’t be so quick to call the lynx the victor there. You got a decisive kill and managed a draw in the other fights. Even in a fight between two equivalent fighters, a dogfight is usually decided by the first few serious hits. Yours managed to survive the first volley and deal a good chunk of damage each time. That’s a success, especially if you’re flying them in squadrons.
Maybe a couple of small simple weapons could work as point defence for these interceptors. As for the name, I'm calling it the Lasher.
When fielded in large numbers, these will grant you air superiority.
I think that one gight it did pretty well for itself considering that the first hit sheared off the tail fins. That chassis could make for an interesting dive bombing and/or suicide attacker.
i noticed when you went into custom jet engines, you said a normal one would fit. however, small custom jet engines were added not too long ago! they'd be much more useful for a jet that size.
also, yes, mimics are used for the wings in the Spiral's wings. i've used something similar in a jet i've built and i've found they look a LOT better than armoring them with regular blocks.
I have a name suggestion. Either Mosquitos or Blood Gnats. Because they're tiny and meant to annoy the enemy
Most Steel Strider plane wings use metal and alloy panels. These are found in the decorative blocks.

Ahh, I love this! Cheap little spam fighters like this are a lot of fun. I kinda like the idea of naming them after a blade... A "Dagger" or "Shortsword", perhaps? Ineffective and weak against a 'proper' opponent, but amazingly cheap and easy to put on the field, while still not being useless/outright bad.
Ooohhhh, here's an idea! Make a variant of the fighters that tries to shoot down enemy missiles and CRAM shells, and tries to stay near allied ships/aircraft, to make it more of an escort/defense craft to help out in later fights where the enemy has a lot more armor?
You could call the new plane the brood wing

I'd strongly suggest using the simple weapon laser for an interceptor. The lack of projectile travel time is invaluable against small, fast targets.

You could also modify this little interceptor to be a munitions destroyer. That fire rate could potentially knock down a number of missiles and maybe (doubtfully) cram shots. that would be pretty amazing in a swarm. that way you wouldn't need to add AMS to any of your other craft if you have this swarm available.
lathrix, if something is at angles you dont expect or perfectly smooth when you dont expect it, it's mimics! you can aways take the block of your choice (say metal) and just set it to 1.01 times the width of say a wing segment and hide its uglyness. mimics also have minimal drag, so go wild!
Also the steam propulsion and the bulky exterior really adds some steam punky heavy charm. Maybe you could make a designated anti tank variant with a small hesh advanced weapon or missile?
How about doing unguided rockets sort of like WW2 AT rockets fired from IL-2's? Use the speed damage head for the rocket and make it so it fires only when directly in line of sight.
Hey, I think I found a bit of a game breaker(please don't flame if thats already a commonly known thing). attaching fins, a magnet and a radar or IF component to a missile (no thruster)and giving it its initial momentum through ejectors makes for a pretty interesting anti air defense.
Okay but the little asshalf of the the at 21:01 looked kinda cute and I think would be a really good decoy craft that spams from a mother ship and has different ones distracting different things like radars and flares. Born to be destroyed for the greater success of the hive

i believe custom jets will receive an overhaul in the future, and small custom jet blocks will be added, so thats something you should tinker with in the next update.
That little craft would be perfect for a carrier build. Small nimble(ish) and can be mass produced

There's nothing stopping you from using these light interceptors alongside a heavier craft for use as CAP fighters, leaving the heavy aircraft to perform in a strike craft role.
I think the water jets are to counteract the infrared detection without flares, since it’s not a normal engine. Also it would be pretty cool if you built some kind of A10 aircraft that has one advanced cannon that can obliterate enemy ships/tanks in small groups

Note:
An interceptor is used defensively against attacking enemy aircraft (such as bombers) and reconnaissance aircraft, utilizing speed and long-range weaponry (missiles), in order to preemptively stop enemy attacks and recon efforts.
Meanwhile, an air superiority fighter is built primarily to combat other fighters (as well as attack aircraft), utilizing maneuverability and capable short-range weaponry (usually missiles, but they have guns as a last resort), in order to provide a safe air-space for allied forces.
Of course, in FtD, though, pretty much every small aircraft is a multi-role.
I've seen someone suggest thorn as a name, which seems pretty good.
I would suggest the larger variant to be the "Spine", and the carrier should be an airship, and called the "Obligator"
Custom Jets aren't hard to build with and they produce a lot of thrust, so aircraft powered by them can be pretty fast. I barely even build aircraft without them anymore. The only downside is that they're fragile and take up a lot of space. If you want to get a lot of speed out of an aircraft it needs to be about half engine, and needs decent streamlining. But my most recent craft is a heavy CRAM bomber that delivers a battleship's broadside worth of bombs. It's vulnerable to AA, but it's also a lot of fun.
You could try naming the new planes "The Goats" now now hear me out there quick, can do some damage, and move in herds. "beware the goats are coming" and if you desire to remake them better. they can be called the rams due to rams having big horns and can hit harder and are stronger. i doubt this will be the name for them but i hope it gets a chuckle.
Lathland the little wings on the Steel Strider plane are the rudder peices.

As someone who builds nice-isb looking planes often in FTD, I would say mimics are the best bet for a "fighter-jet" look. If you take a look at any of the cheap jets on the steel striders you can get a pretty good idea of how they do the wings.

Something your interceptor was missing is sweet leading edges. Check out the Wedge Front and Wedge Back armor blocks. Better drag and ricochet performance.

It is rather chunky I must agree, but it is only proportional to the amount of BRRRRRRRRRRRRRT produced by the craft.

I don't really like custom jets, not because they're unbalanced, or too complicated, but because since the last time I've used them the only module worth putting on is more combustion chambers, if you want it to be more efficient, just add more extra combusters and less injectors, and that's about it. Haven't tested them since the last update though,
