  • A short video which may provide some motivation if you hit a dip in your Martial Arts Journey. I have had many conversations over the last 15 years, with people from all walks of life, around the world, about Martial Arts and philosophy. This is a little piece on some of the thoughts I have put together from those converastions.
References to Bruce Lee, Marcus Aurelius, David Hume, William Shakespeare, Marcelo Garcia, Gordon Ryan, Saenchai, Buakaw, and segments from my own career. I used clips from Rocky 3, Karate kid, Million Dollar Baby, Troy to emphasise some points and add a bit of entertainment to the education. There are also clips of my own training, with Damien Trainor, a fight I had as an amateur and professional fights I had in China.

This is by far my favourite of all your videos so far; it was so reflective of my own feelings. Trying to let go after a bad training session/experience takes a lot of maturity that I don't always have.
Also that slip and roll at 8:35 was silky smooth 😁

Haha ye your very immature Benji! 😂. Really appreciate that though mate thought I'd make a different kind of vid so glad someone got something out if it! It's definitely a process we all go through man and I was similar to yourself when I first started, obsessive haha. Thinking about it shows you are self aware though mate. Some people never question their own thoughts and feelings and then it's impossible to change them! Hope your good bro

amazing video, mate. You hit the nail on the head with unrealistic expectations. People often compare themselves to the image others portray via social media etc and get depressed and anxious. So many people are afraid of having a go at something like MMA in fear of sucking and being judged by others, or even themselves. Its all just ego driven

Wicked comment mate! It's like the last couple years I've started to understand a lot more about what all these different spiritual gurus are talking about haha. Letting go of ego and not being too attached to anything, the impermanence of all things! A bit deep haha but that shift in mindset is really helpful for dealing with any negative thoughts and emotions, something that seems a common place now in 2021! I think martial arts can really help build resiliency in an essentially coddled generation of people in the first world, myself included haha. Thanks for kind words mate ❤️

Yes brotha! Haha mate I couldn't have made the video if I hadn't been through those feelings myself. Luckily there was no social media back when I started out or there could be some weird videos of me in my bedroom shouting I'm the greatest or something 😂

Damien Trainor, the legend himself! really solid message on the mental/psychology and philosophy of martial arts. What's your take on energy vs ego? Cory Sandhagen raised an interesting perspective with Rogan on energy going into fights, making sure now that his energy is higher than his opponent's, which he contributes to his recent success. You see it in amateur bouts really clearly, where the fighter with the ego/high energy often beats the fighter with low ego/low energy

The legend himself haha! Known Damien a long time now! Great instructor and fighter! Thanks for the comment mate really good points there! I think once you become experienced the energy is less of a factor. You realise that once the action starts any posturing is irrelevant and it becomes about skill, strength, timing etc. If you can affect your opponents psychology then you can impair their ability to react efficiently, drain their energy. When you see the Thais or boxers with hundreds of amateur fights, you see psychology become less of a factor. I think amateur fighters and early pros it's really important to build a positive mindset and helping them build this and prepare them for stress! Being an introvert or extrovert is a genetic personality trait so you have to play with the hand your dealt haha.

@@prostriking This video resonates with me with muay thai. Everything that you mention is true about ego and martial arts. I’m glad that I caught onto my ego and started searching up about this issue. It’ll only make a better person, and martial art practitioner.
