  • Respect Your Elders: The 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt is a love letter to the 1960s
    The new 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt is chock full of delicious retro bits, but how does it compare to the original?
    The iconic highlight of Bullitt is the scene that sees a Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT 390 Fastback, driven by Steve McQueen as Lieutenant Frank Bullitt, chase a black Dodge Charger R/T through the streets of San Francisco. It’s regarded as one of the most influential chase sequences in movie history - the inclusion of close-ups showing McQueen doing the driving himself makes it the scene by which all others are measured, and this in spite of the Charger losing no fewer than eight hubcaps. The scene’s most enduring moment arrives when the bad guys are searching for Bullitt - he suddenly appears in the Charger’s rearview mirror.
    Fast forward to today, and we pit a replica of the original against the 2019 Mustang Bullitt that pays homage to the movie’s sassy co-star.
    The restoration of the replica 1968 Mustang has been meticulous, to say the least. It was built on the same assembly line two weeks after the movie cars, and it came with the same options, including the S-code package. After the body was stripped, it was painted using the original PPG Highland Green paint, has the same door mirror from a 1966 Mustang, and the radio antenna was moved to the right rear fender to keep it out of the shots of McQueen muscling the steering wheel. Further adding to its accuracy, the replica has an Autolite battery and alternator, both of which are rare finds.

      @@2003evodave You obviously don’t get the point of owning a 68. Vintage Cars aren’t made to be fast. They were made for good and fun driving experience’s, and not to mention who wouldn’t want to own something that’s literally an antique? And plus Vintage Cars can increase in value overtime make them a good investment.

      I had a 390 1968 mustang. It was not a car that could be called "easy to live with". The brakes and steering were not modern. Even after I rebuilt the power steering system it wept fluid. Even on modern radial tires and polyurethane sway bar bushings it drove like an old car.

    The 320hp rating for the 390 engine was..um, optimistic. You can't directly compare horse power ratings from cars of that era with today's cars. In the 1960s the car companies advertised 'gross' horse power ratings. Today's cars are required to provide net HP ratings. That old Mustang, in stock form, probably put about 220hp to the rear wheels. BTW, the 390 was never intended to be a performance engine. The 390 was designed to power station wagons, pick-up trucks and the like...lots of torque at low RPM, that doesn't really make for a good sports car engine. If you want to see how much power those two cars really produce, you need to get both up on a dyno.

    I had a 67 GTA coupe 390 in the 90s. The 390 was quite heavy with the c6 tranny and kind of drove like a LTD. I considered the 390 a station wagon motor.....lots of low end torque but did not breath well enough to be a real performance car. In 68 the 428 cobra jet was a game changer. A good friend has a very very nice 67 Eleanor replica that waa a S code car (390) I ribbed him so much about the grocery getting 390 he stuffed a 428 CJ in it. The 390 was actually pretty nice...aluminum heads, TB fuel injection and more. It actually would carry quite a few groceries .

  • @pauldollak994
    @pauldollak994 Před 3 lety +1

    The old Mustang is lovely but there is no real comparison to be made in power or performance. The two cars are simply in entirely different leagues, which is to be expected given the difference in age, something that is glossed over in the video. The old Mustang’s hp figures that he gives, for example, are gross not net, so greatly exaggerated. The acceleration difference is pretty significant even as reported - the difference between the Bullitt and a modern Maxiima, if you want a reference - without even getting into how the numbers he gives for the new Bullitt are slower than reported by other auto journalists. The old car would not have a chance against the new one on a drag strip.
    And speaking of not-to-mention, the ride and handling difference between the new car and the old is on the same level as between the old and a Model T. Independent rear suspension would have been a wet dream for a 1960s Ford engineer while magnaride and switchable drive modes would have been dismissed as science fiction fantasy.
    So a track would be even more embarrassing for the old car than racing the new one on a drag strip.
    Fun video and I enjoyed it, thanks, but commenters and driving.ca, now really ,these two great cars are only comparable in terms of their homage to a movie legacy and shade sof green paint. Performance? Forget it. There’s no comparison on any level,.
