    Henry, never apologise for showing your authentic self. I for one don’t see staged, I see a man who has found his true passion and wants to share that passion - for photography, for the beauty of the outdoors and of the natural world. That passion shines through every video. Keep doing what you so obviously love doing and we’ll keep watching.

    Do you know what keeps me coming back to watch your channel week after week ? I could say it's the lovely scenery , I could say it's the photography tips , I could say it's the shared experience of feeling like I'm on the trip with you , and all of those are true , but the stand out thing for me is your honesty , integrity , passion , all rolled into one .... no pretentious bull , no prima Donna look at me I'm the best , just raw enthusiasm and honesty , hi , I'm Henry Turner i love hiking and taking beautiful photos , come with me .... I love that , your passion is very evident , showing your emotion instead of hiding it , whether you're feeling great or feeling jaded , it brings a reality that others lack .
    We all know from our own experience that sometimes it's not the perfect photoshoot , the weather , the light , the journey, fatigue , etc all conspire against us , content creators that only show the cherry on top and not the whole cake with the slight burnt base , they're lacking a bit in integrity in my opinion , or maybe integrity is not the right word , maybe authenticity ?
    I like the way you tell it how it is ! Keep being you . 👍

    I totally agree with you regarding the plaques. I don’t mind seeing one which records a tragic incident such as a plane crash etc. However I cannot walk along the seafront where I live without more and more benches appearing with plaques on them. In my local park there are remembrance benches throughout. Two of them are always covered in bunches of flowers, nobody can or would sit on them. I go out into the countryside, park or seafront for my own mental health not to constantly be reminded of death. We all have our own tragedies to deal with without seeing others every few steps. I can visit a graveyard for that if I’m so inclined.

    Henry totally agree about the plaques. I too live in a beautiful area of the UK and constantly see memorials being put up in woodland and attached to trees which infuriates me. My father recently died and loved these areas. As a tribute to him we scattered his ashes in his favourite place surely a much better way remember our loved ones

    I’m not a fan of memorial plaques either, although they are the least problematic when it comes to stuff like that, much worse are flowers left in plastic bags, the flowers eventually die but never get removed, I’ve also come across people leaving cards, soft toys, mugs and the other day I came across an a4 laminated Christmas message to someone’s dead parents stapled to a tree in the Peak District.
    I often go out with camera and never take it out of bag, it used to annoy me but it doesn’t bother me now, enjoying the walk is all that matters.

  • @explorist5
    @explorist5 Před 4 měsíci +3

    100% agree with you on the plaque issue. It’s becoming an ever increasing issue and not just in areas of wilderness. It is entirely selfish on the part of those that place them. A view or beauty spot may well have had a meaning to those commemorated but it could also be special to hundreds of others for a variety of reasons. Placing a plaque effectively stamps ownership of feelings for the area.

    Anyone who watches you regularly will know how passionate you are, and the emotions you show are real and never staged. They are also very infectious, and you have certainly inspired me in my short time in landscape photography. My special place is Norfolk, it's beauty often makes me stop and I get a lump in the throat, especially when it's time to go home. As for memorials, there's a place for them, but far too often they are of the kind that just leaves a mess after. Plaques are ok, to a point, a park bench or the like, but not out in the wilds.

  • @Andrew-fs2yg
    @Andrew-fs2yg Před 4 měsíci +2

    Totally agree regarding the memorial plaques.
    Human beings make a big enough mark on this planet already.
    I'm very conscious when I'm out in the wild to leave no trace.
    Why would I want to leave one when I'm dead and gone.
    I can understand family and friends may wish to remember and mark a place they know was special to you in life but there really is no need.
    Like you said, you will never know as you'll not be here to know it see it.
    Bit morbid maybe but I see death as part of life.
    It comes to us all. We really need to make the most of the time we have and do the things we love while we can 💯❤️

  • @DaveEP
    @DaveEP Před 4 měsíci +5

    Another great one Henry. I agree that memorials are not ideal in places like this. Who exactly are they for? The person being remembered, or the person doing the remembering? Why do they need this here in order to remember them? Can't they remember them without it? It's certainly not so the rest of us can remember them, because despite having their name, perhaps age, whether they liked it here or not (etc), we didn't know them, will never know them, so any memory of them is void. I'm not trying to be mean or cause offence in any way shape or form, but in reality, all it does is spoil the unspoiled for their own (selfish?) reasons without caring anything about those who follow. Please people, stop doing it!

    In addition to loving your beautiful photography, I love that you are not afraid of showing your passion and honest emotions. There is something so stirring about nature and I can totally identify with your emotional reaction because I often feel overwhelmed by the stunning scenery and conditions all around me. That’s why nature and landscape photography is my favourite genre. I totally agree about the plaques, etc. One of the first “rules” I learned when I started hiking in the beautiful Rocky Mountains close to home in Alberta, was “leave no trace”. I would be mortified if someone left a plaque commemorating me in nature - I would comeback to haunt them!

    I've stayed in that bothy a couple of times but they've tarted it up inside from the last time I was there! A great area to hike and some fabulous hills that get overlooked because the giants of Torridon are so close by. Enjoyed the hike and the photos. I'm ambivalent about memorial plaques. Those two were small and unobtrusive but you are correct; if every hiker/climber had one they'd be everywhere! Personally I think the bothy might have been a better location for a memorial - epecially if they'd put it on a donated seat!

    on the point about memorials I think unless its to note something that happened in that place like a battle or historic event, I think we don't need them in wild. For memorials to people i find it better when they put the plaque in say a visitor's centre or rangers stations etc where there is already man-made structures to fix them too.

On Dartmoor there are a couple huge slabs with passages from the bible inscribed in them. Thanks for sharing another wonderfully genuine vlog Henry. I certainly relate to your feelings regarding Scotland, it certainly is a special place. Regarding the link between the pressure to get good images versus the level of enjoyment you can experience on a hike, I guess it's all about what your goal is when you step out the door. I consciously try to focus on enjoyment of the outdoors first, because if you just focus on the mission of getting a photo you miss the real benefits of the experience that being out in nature provides.

    I'm a bit late to this video but can relate so strongly to your emotions. I live in Yorkshire but get up to the Highlands and islands as often as I can. I was on a mountain late last summer on my own. Everyone else had gone and I stood there with tears in my eyes, just taking in the beauty of my surroundings, exactly as you did. I love Scotland so much and it's as though there is something spiritual there for me. I'm in my 60's and as soon as I enter the Highlands I feel as though I've come home. Maybe because my late gran was from Scotland, I don't know. There is a wonderful song by Scottish band Runrig called "Going Home". You can easily find it on CZcams. It evokes those very emotions in me too. Scotland is a truly wonderful country and we are so lucky to have it virtually on our doorstep. All the best for the future.

    I think the thing with the memorial plaques, it's probably done by the families of those they have lost, and they draw comfort in the fact the memorial is in the place their loved one was most at home. If you go to places where people have died on a mountain, there's usually certain memorial spots, with crosses up and various memorials tied to the crosses. It's just one of those things, death is hard for families, they don't usually think, oh, this is going to litter a beauty spot, they would think, my loved one loved this spot, I want all the world to see the significance of said person memorialised in a beauty spot. Just a different perspective to chew over 😉. Thank you for your hard work in producing these videos, so we can come on your adventures with you

    Sat here sobbing watching this ❤ I got goosebumps seeing those views, and I can completely relate... That feeling of connection to a place, so hard to describe but so profound. It was awesome seeing you have such an amazing experience there, and especially after you were so "meh" at the start of the vid... Thank you so much for sharing, and for showing us such an amazing location ❤

    As my father used to say "Take me as you find me" you show who you are, and what matters to you. I am with you on the memorials, keep the place special for all who have still yet to pass, and for those that have. As you said where would it end.

    Wow, that image at 16:22 is amazing! On the topic of the memorials: what I could maybe understand, is if the people where the memorials are for maybe had an accident on that spot and passed away there. This is what we see on the side of the road as well sometimes. But I do understand your point of view as well, if everyone would do it, there would be no nature to enjoy anymore. Personally, if something were to happen to me, I would not want a memorial that ruins a piece of nature. And Henry, your videos mean so much to me as well! So thank you so much as well!

    I agree with you about the plaques. If anyone were ever to commemorate me, I would want them to make a donation to the upkeep of a beautiful trail or spot, or an organization which takes children or the handicapped out to the spot.

    Henry, thank you thank you thank you for being so authentic and sharing your experiences so honestly. This is why you are so admired and loved by so many people. You really are my inspiration for continuing my photography journey, even during the periods when my mojo has gone to sleep. Keep going my friend…you are one of the best adverts for Scotland and the Lakes…you should get commissions!!

    Hi Henry. I to have been known to show my emotions in places of such beauty, so I know that you do not stage them in any such situation. If I was in the same place I would have probably cried my eyes out, and I agree, Scotland is a special country when it comes to raw beauty.👌🙂

    The best thing about landscape photography, is being in the landscape.
    Different for yourself of course, but my camera gear sits in its bag for weeks between outdoor adventures. So, while I enjoy photography, it's what I am photographing that really matters.

    Thank you for the videos you make! It makes me want to visit Scotland and visit some of the places you’ve been to.
    I agree with you regarding memorials. I do like them for the added historical info about a place I visit, but there’s a way to present them or a place to put them that is not distracting from the beauty of the area. History is an interest of mine.
    Love your passion! ❤

    I know your emotions well, I had that feeling when I first saw the Taj Mahal in fact my wife did as well, I have been to the Taj three times and my emotions were just the same, photography was put on the back burner for a while just so I could take everything in! Those in memory plaques are there for a purpose and would not worry me at all! The views you had up there were fantastic and that little cabin I want to stay there! but that's got no chance! thank your sharing your time with us and it was great being up there with you....

    4:50. Agreed, regarding these memorial plaque things. If they're commemorating someone who'd lost their lives in the area, fair enough, but many of them have no real relation to the location.

    Hi Henry ... another great video. Always enjoy your videos. You take great photos which I think are fantastic but it's always been as much about the places you go and the banter on your walks that I enjoy as well as the photos. I remember when I started watching your channel that I commented that I never go out to take photos, I just go for walks and cycles and always take my camera with me and always take lots of photos. I know it's a bit different for you because it's your job too, but I have seen a gradual shift in emphasis towards enjoying the day more as opposed to the pressure of capturing an image. (And your photography hasn't suffered as a result). The addition of MFT to your quiver and less faffing about with tripods has also helped. 😉
    Keep up the good work. 😊

    I think there's a time and place for plaques. In a manicured park, installing an extra bench as a tribute to someone who volunteered at the park is a win for everyone. The deceased gets recognition and public gain facilities. I've also seen some mounted on precarious cliffs where hikers were lost which seems appropriate. A little history, some recognition, and a warning to others to watch their footing.
