$1100 Dollars in Fluids/Filters! (Buying an RV Without Service History)

- Before we take our '99 Monaco Dynasty on the road, I decided to perform a full maintenance service. I quickly learned there was more involved than I first thought. Over $1000 dollars in fluids/ filters and 2 weeks of research led me to this...
By the end of the weekend I changed the oil, air, and fuel filter in our Onan 7500 generator. Changed the fluid and filters in the hydraulic system, and replaced the fuel filters and diesel engine oil.
Here's a link to the parts list if anyone else has a Cummins 8.3 350hp motorhome:

Little tip for you next time, many truck stops offer free oil changes if you buy enough diesel through them... you just have to sign up for their loyalty program... so look into it, the catch is it has to be a diesel engine, because the mechanics they have are diesel mechanics at most locations... my grandparents used this for many many years for the oil changes on their diesel rv they had.
Right on doing everything yourself, as a diesel mechanic myself I can tell you, you saved some good money, I had to laugh though when you said 6 gallons, most of what I work on holds 10 gallons of oil, good job
I bought a Diesel a couple months back and I did some of the changes not all of them yet. I give you a ton of credit.
Nice work! It's always fun trying to figure out what a previous owner did (or didn't) do.
Thanks Mike! The fiance and I are planning an RV purchase in a few years and never realized how intense maintenance can be! Guess it's just something I never gave much thought to, but definitely a necessity!
This is super exciting! Thanks for taking us along for the ride! I hope your test run works flawlessly, and I hope to see you guys in my neck of the woods someday! :) (Raleigh, NC)
+Geeksmithing Thanks! Hopefully we'll see you there.
I'm really happy for you guys. You two make plans and you conquer them with fervor. You are real role models.
We use forums a lot and love rv Geeks! Got lots of good tips from them on switching to led lighting 😊 great job!
Just found you! We are thinking of getting a used diesel motorhome, seems well maintained and I like to do my own maintenance too. Thanks!!
I know that road. Yep fluids and filters add up real fast! Good video. Now, to go watch the rest of the videos on your channel.
This is why you sir are a bad ass. I would have stopped at the forms and 10 CZcams videos, and I would've never called the manufacturer.
+shadfurman. Yeah, he is a bad ass.
Lol me and my dad got a repo that didn’t have any service done to it for 18 years. It took a whole week to fix the air dryer! We had to take the canister off with a saw zall
Hooray for self taught knowledge! Can't wait to see you all if you ever pass by FL!
+Mrs. Doodle Journey Agreed self taught knowledge is the coolest!
Eye protection is very important when working under the vehicle or changing fluids like that.
VampireOnline whimp
Wow! 6 gallons of oil?!!! That's massive. Yeah, my dad told me years ago to change the oil hot for that very reason. Good stuff.
This is going to be awesome!!
Congratulations, it looks like everything is going according to your plan! Where do you think your first trip is going to be?
Cool that you did all that yourself
great video. fun to watch.
when do you guys begin your trip? I remember you all mentioning the possibility of helping people out with some builds
I'm looking forward to the video of when you put the hot rod flames down the sides....
holy ballsy thanks to youtube recommandations I just discovered this awesome channel :p subbed
Thanks! :)
I love your shirt from instructables! How did you get it?
That is a lot, but think, depending on mileage you may get by with doing the fluid change every 12 months, maybe a little longer. Air filter might last 2 or 3 years. Yes its a lot up front, but the cost is low over its lifetime.
What mpg have you been getting? How long do you guys plan to keep the RV and what do you think it'll be worth when you want to sell it?
Looking forward to parts 3 and 4 of the Costa Rica series!
I just subscribed, like the instructables shirt btw.
Great tips for DIY and for saving money! That maintenance would have cost a fortune at an RV dealer.
on the rc sharpener what did you check cant get mine to start
OH MY! $1000 in fluids and filters. That is a lot of money for maintenance. However, you are very smart to do all of this. It is no different than spending $1000 on upkeep of a "stix and brix" and most people wouldn't think a thing about doing that because you don't normally do it all at once.
Any reason to do the oil change before the coolant?
What are you guys going to do for daily driving?
Though that RV has Florida plates and probably has less need of antifreeze, looking at the coolant that you were draining out of the genset, it was no where near the proper mixture of antifreeze. There are other reasons besides cold weather to have a good antifreeze mix. In my career, antifreeze that weak in the system usually meant that there was a leak, either existing or in the past. If I were you I would keep and eye on the coolant level of your genset...
RV Geeks is strangely addicting :)
Do you have air brakes??? There is an air filter/dryer on your rig
Mike, did you replace the fuel filter? since it is a diesel, many times when they sit for long periods the diesel can grow micro bacteria and plug up the fuel filter, i would highly recommend changing it and running a full tank of fuel with some sort of additive for cleaning the fuel system
+storxusmc If you click on the parts list in the description, he did list fuel filters. I'm guessing he just didn't video that part?
you had me at something
do you have a dates for your long road trip? Do you know what stops you are going to make yet?
Don't forget to lube the chassis. If it's a spartan then it probably has somewhere around 18 to 24 lube points that require a grease gun and a high performance NLGI 2 grease. Don't overfill the boots as they are about 100 bucks to replace if they rupture. 2 or 3 pumps should do it, unless it is completely dry.
+JustA Dad Good point! It's a Roadmaster chassis. I'll need to look into it.
I'm guessing you noticed already, but the reverse light on the passenger side appears to be out.
lol
If I recall In the movie RV Robin Williams call it "the big rolling turd"
Badger fan?
How much money did you save by doing the fluid changes yourself?
knowing they are done and done right are priceless, the rv place wouldn't have even changed the generator oil
To be honest, I never bought into the idea that you had to run the engine and get the car hot before changing the oil. I have 30 years of experience as a heavy duty/diesel mechanic. It was always my opinion that if you are constantly changing your oil at the proper intervals you aren't going to have much in the way of sediment in the first place. Also, for me, the pain of coming into contact with hot surfaces always overrode any minor advantage in getting EVERY last speck of dirt. I've owned and serviced my own cars for 40 years and have never had engine trouble in any car/motorcycle I have ever owned. Having said that, it is probably a good idea to do on any engine with no service history that you are servicing for the first time.
+MISTERComaToes i agree with you, i think its more of an old time thing... maybe back when oil was much much more thicker in generators and such before we got engines with much thinner clearances and oil..
+MISTERComaToes I was always taught that a hot engine meant all the oil would come out easier. Is that not the case?
Warm is fine, hot is overkill. It takes a short period of time to do that. The time were cold oil would be more of an issue is in cold weather/cold climates.
There is no way they changed that generator oil.. That was pretty black.. Unless it was just the lighting on the camera... The only other exception I can think of is if they used that thing massive amounts since the maintenance.. And considering the shape of the rv.. I doubt they were full timers.... Hell to be that black.. I would think full timers with a LOT of boon docking
Pro Tip: for those gloves put some talcum (or baby) powder in them first and your hands will slide in better.
I use ky jelley for that, slides in great
Love these new vids, some cool advice to save money next time, Don't buy water for your batteries. Boil home tap water, let it cool then use that instead.
James distilled water is cheap to buy, your idea of boiling the water and cooling it
would just kill bacteria in it, which would be useless, you need to distill it to get rid
of any minerals in it.
Did you buy a toyota camry?
+Daniel H No, that was Lauren's moms car.
Mike, would be interest to hear how you did your RV search. Sounded like you bought from an individual vs. dealer since you mentioned the previous owner. Thanks for all the great videos sharing your lives on CZcams
Aw- poor lil' guy uses rubber gloves cause he don't want to soil his lil' hands! LMFAO 😂!
I hope you didn't leave that valve on the oil plug screw, it's dangerous to leave it on, it could opened while driving and loose all the oil.
+Angel Luis Trinidad It's made to stay on. There's a safety mechanism that keeps it from opening on the road.
+Mike and Lauren Okay then, but just in case, the first few days check it. By the way, how is Hudson doing? we want to know everything about the RV, so, please, keep those videos coming. Thanks a lot.
+Angel Luis Trinidad Dawwww you care ☺️
Mrs. Doodle Journey Can you please explain what Dawwww means? So, I can understand your comment. By the way, caring is a good thing. Good human beings should care for one and others.
+Angel Luis Trinidad 😂 it's just another way to saw Awwww, as in when you see an adorable kitten chasing it's tail. I meant my comment as a compliment, not to offend.
Teach the RV Geeks HOW TO WORK ON YOUR OWN COACH
this is why diesel's are not as big a value as folks make them out to be.
What do you mean? Wouldn't a gas motorhome have engine oil, fuel, and air filters? As well as generator oil, fuel, and air?
Eeeew. This seems so icky and nasty. I would hate doing that.

+Jackie Moyer you did it...
