    My 4 year old boy legit only eats chips. He refuses to eat anything else. I even tried not giving him any chips for a full day and he still didn’t touch any food. But when I do manage to sneak something on his lips to try he gags. I’m a 1st time parent and didn’t think feeding your child would be so stressful. 😵

      @@christinajackson7953 I think there are different parenting styles and I don't judge any of them as long as children are not being abused. I believe there is a difference between pain and injury. Pain is necessary to learn and grow but injury is harmful. Telling a child "no" or giving them a timeout is painful to them but it doesn't cause injury. Your boss may not hit you but they will fire you or write you up if you don't do what you're supposed to, that's painful. There are ways we receive pain everyday to learn, the forms in which that comes, varies.

    I would offer 2 more tips. Just from experience. 1 Try having someone else take over the feeding a few times. I have a daughter with autism with texture issues and other eating issues. For some reason they're stronger with Mom. Kids instinctually pick up on the side of signals from the people around them And if Mom has anxiety over how well the child eats sometimes that can increase anxiety over food. Just have dad or grandma or even a sibling try feeding once or twice.
    2 Also try changing the environment we had more issues at the dinner table if people were talking. Sometimes kids with sensory issues have crossed signals and things like too much noise, unfamiliar smells like perfume or cleaning products, or even an uncomfortable chair or sweater can affect how receptive they will be while eating. I knew another child through group therapy that would vomit if they tried eating in bright loud rooms but could handle more foods if they were in a quiet softly lit room.

    I used to be like this as a kid. I use to hate food. Im 32 now but when I was 5. I remember I just never use to feel hungry. I never knew what the feeling of hunger was like till when I was 9 then I developed a bad eating habit to at everything in the fridge. Funny how my parents started hating that I use to do that. Thing was grown ups in my family were forcing and even hitting me to eat. Around 8 n 9 they started making me smoothies, cakes and other yummy treats and then I loved it because it was super sweet and I learned how to make them myself then I was just making them all the time. That's where I developed a habit after I got hooked on a yummy taste. After that I couldn't stop eating and got fat at 10 till I was 12 then just always been chubby or skinny again because I always worked out but a eating disorder is not healthy. There must be a balance.

    • @speaklifeinspire
      @speaklifeinspire  Před rokem +3

      Wow! Thank you so much for sharing this! I think it's a good lesson on balance, like you said. Yummy foods can be used sometimes but that's not all a child can eat because it's not healthy. I think that creativity is important too especially with the "yummy" foods. Like replacing some of the sugar with fruit ingredients, still sweet but a better source of sweet and adding veggies to cheese sauce for mac and cheese. Subtle stuff like that.

    • @speaklifeinspire
      @speaklifeinspire  Před rokem +1

      Have you talked to your doctor? I've always been really thin and weight gain has been hard. A friend of mine has used Pedialyte shakes with meals to help add extra calories. My mom used to make me smoothies with all my favorite things but add half an avocado, I couldn't taste it but it added good calories. Protein shakes for kids are helpful but your doctor may be able to offer alternatives or additives that you can incorporate to help your child. Some children just don't enjoy eating and they can't always identify hunger pains. You amy want to make mealtime a game for her, incorporate her favorite things or people during this time. If she likes Minnie Mouse maybe she'll eat if she gets to eat out of a Minnie Mouse plate or watch her favorite show or listen to her favorite song. Also, maybe verbal praise or a reward when she eats will help her. I will be making more videos on this topic. Hope you'll keep watching!!

      My son has issues too. He doesn't like to eat. He'll sometimes only eat an egg a day or few bites of oatmeal and some toast, some crackers here and there or yogurt/yogurt bites but not actual meals.
      He'll take maybe a few bites of his meals and not want the rest.
      I've added supplements to his milk since he was born though.... arctic cod liver oil, bio-K-mulsion, vitamin D3, a multivitamin for babies, probiotics and iodine.
      I've also started him on plant protein which I mix in with his with his whole milk or I'll give him plant protein shakes that come in the cartons that he drinks just fine.
      So far he weighs 24 pounds. He's a year and a half.
      So for his age anywhere between 20-30 pounds is the normal range but it's scary how little he will eat.
      I'm guessing the supplements have been the life saver here because he eats very little.
      Maybe try some supplements? Especially the cod liver oil, multi and some type.of meal replacement drink.
      If kids are having issues with eating I think supplementation is important so they don't develop health issues. Especially cavities from nutritional deficiencies.

    What can i do if my kid just doesn’t get hungry? Or at least that’s how he plays it off because when there’s pizza around you know his appetite opens up

      You could maybe have something he likes but only let him eat it if it’s at the end of the meal; e.g “you can eat this cookie if you finish these carrots and pasta!”

    Are these ideas applicable to kids of any age or were you keeping only infants and toddlers in mind? Our kid is about to turn 4 and just doesn’t like to self feed. She has no allergies or health issues.

      Thanks for asking! These strategies actually work for all ages. I worked with school aged kids during the summer and some of them worked for 2nd and 3rd graders. Some are catered to little ones but you can improvise and use what works. I will be putting out more videos on this topic so I hope you keep watching!

    I know the creator probably won't have time to answer this but I'm so desperate if ANYONE can help I would appreciate it. I have a 12 month old who is just now starting solids and she barely barely eats anything. I had to switch back to formula to keep her weight up because she started losing weight drastically. Her doctor said it's normal but I can tell this isnt normal. What is a good food to start her out with? She has a decent amount of front teeth but seems to gag a lot on every texture even if she has had it several times.

    My 7 year old eats grits, white rice and tater tots. Thats is. He has a lot of food allergies and has been to the er a lot. I think he is afraid of food. Its driving me crazy. He's been like this for years and he is so skinny. The doctor was like well all your kids are small so its ok. No. His 3 year old brother weighs almost the same weight as him.
    He went 3 days without eating one time because he just refused everything. He was weak and started sleeping so i had to give in cause I didnt want him to get sick. My poor husband broke down in the floor crying because he wouldnt eat.

    I have a non verbal autistic 5 year old who refuses to eat anything and will only drink water. He is 100% gtube fed since he came home from the nicu. There is no medical reason he cant eat he just refuses. He was iv fed and tube fed for the first 6 months of life in nicu for bowel ressection and since he has a hard time gaining weight we had to feed every few hours and i guess he never learned hunger. He will gag and vomit at the sight of me eating. Im at my wits end.

      Hi, I actually worked with a child who was in a similar situation as your 5 year old. She was tube fed and fought if anyone brought food around her.
      I noticed she would mouth certain toys so one day I secretly smeared food on the toys and as she mouthed the toy, she looked at the toy oddly and replaced it in her mouth. I secretly placed a small amount of food again and she tried mouthing it again. From that day on, she allowed me to place small amounts of food on her lips and within days she was eating again. Her speech therapist and parents were AMAZED!
      Try to be clever and remember, progress whether small or big is still progress ❤

      A friend of mine, her daughter was the same. Was peg fed overnight and use to tell my friend “yum yum” when she would connect the feed. When she was 10 years old at the work Christmas party, someone gave her some hot chips and she just started eating. She use to buy hot chips for her little girl. She was just so happy to see her eat.
      There is a mother in Australia that makes nutritional Peg food out of fruits & vegetables that sells really well.
      3 years on her little girl is still peg fed at night and eats a “white diet” (bread, rice, pasta, chips). She doesn’t care she is happy she is eating something.

    With 6 kids I don't got time for this 6x with 6 different diets. 🤣 whatever I make they have to eat. If they don't they all have had a lovely waking in the middle of the night by their tummy hurting from hunger then vomiting all thru the night and still with all that experience under their belt from not eating their food they are still stubborn and refuse to eat all three meals with no snacks because they'll just use the snack as a meal.
    As a mom who just wants her kids to be healthy and strong I'm burnt-out.

      You may have to get creative. There are chicken nuggets , mac and cheese, and other foods at the grocery store that have hidden veggies in them. That may help. Also, not sure if your child has a favorite character but maybe getting plates and utensils with that character on it may help. Also, making foods they like with blended up vegetables in it may help. Or making them eat one bite of veggies for a trade of one item they like and standing your ground may help. Eventually, most times, the hunger pains take over and they may be ready to eat at least a few bites. Hope this helps! I will be making more videos on this topic so I hope you keep watching!

    • @manaoat9118

      What if you start making those foods, like hamburgers, homemade? Simply for the beginning. We want to disattach the connection to processed junk food, that you get in fast food, into more refined meats and such on. Then you can start adding vegetables to those meals, like in the burgers, as sides or incorporated inside. However, it might be best not to keep this information from your child. Having children make good connections towards taste and things like vegetables is crucial in order for them to develop a healthy relationship with food. For desserts like oreos, trying mixing those with things like yogurts; getting him accustomed and start to like it, then replacing the oreos with fruits or granola! Slowly and enthusiastically introduce more varieties by making different dishes.
      I hope this is helpful, I'm not a professional.
