The book is a novel that tells two parallel stories: one set in the 13th century, about the friendship between the Sufi mystic Shams of Tabriz and the poet Rumi 🧙♂️📜; and the other set in the 21st century, about the transformation of Ella Rubinstein, a bored and unhappy housewife who becomes fascinated by the manuscript of a novel about Shams and Rumi 📚💕.
The novel within the novel, titled Sweet Blasphemy, is written by Aziz Zahara, a mysterious and charismatic author who lives in Amsterdam 🇳🇱. Ella works as a reader for a literary agent and is assigned to review his manuscript. As she reads the story of Shams and Rumi, she begins to question her own life and marriage 💔. She also develops an email correspondence with Aziz, which soon turns into a romantic attraction 💘.
The story of Shams and Rumi is told from multiple perspectives, including Shams himself, Rumi, Rumi’s wife and sons, Rumi’s disciples, and other historical figures 👥. Shams is a wandering dervish who has a vision of his death and his soulmate, whom he recognizes as Rumi, a famous Islamic scholar and preacher in Konya, Turkey 🇹🇷. Shams travels to Konya and meets Rumi, who is immediately drawn to him. They spend months together, discussing the secrets of love, God, and the universe 🌌. Shams teaches Rumi the forty rules of love, which are spiritual principles based on Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam ☪️.
However, not everyone is happy with their friendship. Rumi’s family and followers feel neglected and jealous of Shams 😒. They also disapprove of Shams’ unconventional and controversial views on religion and society 😠. They plot to separate them and even kill Shams 😱. Shams faces many dangers and enemies, but also touches many lives with his wisdom and compassion 😇. He and Rumi inspire each other to create some of the most beautiful poetry and music in history 🎶.
The book explores the themes of love, spirituality, faith, friendship, and identity. It shows how love can transform a person and a society, and how it can transcend time and space 🚀.
