  • So many things influence a drum performance. An important one, of course, is the drum sound. In this video I play the same groove with three different sets. Not only do they sound different, but each of them makes me play a certain way. I realize that I tend lay into the drums a little more with the pop sound, and I'm playing off the drums more with the jazz kit, for example. Which in turn influences my balance on the kit and therefore also the timing. These are interesting things to be aware of.
But there are a lot of other factors involved. Drum sizes, the drum heads (which in this case are pointed out in the video) , tuning, microphones, the room, processing...
So this is anything but a tutorial. I am no engineer, I just want to show, how I try to get different sounds with the equipment available to me. And how changing the drum set may change a recording, even if you play the same groove.
For the sake of this comparison, processing is the same with all three kits. There's a lot more that could be done in this department and, in fact, the different sounds would demand different approaches but that's not the point of this video.
