- The 1993 law known as “don’t ask, don’t tell” allowed gay people to serve in the U.S. military as long as they remained closeted. The law has been repealed for over a decade, but many of those whose military careers were ended by the policy are still missing out on honorable discharge status and benefits, a CBS News investigation has found. Jim Axelrod reports.

I'll never understand who has so much extra time in their lives to care about what other grown people do in their own homes not doing anything to you.
@ATLSTLCurls that part
Amen brother. Will never understand homophobia as long as I live.
if you pause and read the letter addressed to his mother, it wasn't purely about homosexuality, rather, it was that he was a Captain (O-3) with a male Enlisted member. It's more about fraternization, however the homosexual allegation was just the cherry on top.
Of course but then obviously the actual problem is having to see two men holding hands or worse in public.
@ATLSTLCurls Glad u brought it up. They absolutely need to separate normal people's blood away from what the gay donates
I don’t care what or who they want to be, they served in our services defending our rights! They are owed the same benefits as all service members!
Our rights are preserved by the constitution.....the military has nothing to do with it. I get it, you are just repeating what you've heard
I served on active duty from 1989-2009. I always thought "Dont ask, Dont tell" was the dumbest policy ever. Right up there with no blacks in the white ranks. So glad these veterans are getting the attention they've long deserved.
I served in the military from 2000-2008; I chose against another reenlistment because I saw the military becoming one big social experiment. I was told "it's the kinder, more gentle Marine Corps". I witnessed a fighting force being weakened by progressive policies...kind of like our military today that is weak.
Bottom line...These veterans should have their discharges corrected.
Please give them their honorable discharge.
Any American, who wants to serve their country, should not be denied. A military veteran is a military veteran. This is another embarrassing chapter in our country's history.
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT 👍 another Trump abomination. 🤐
Totally agree with you
Not quite ANY American!
Hey, if we don't care that the president shakes hands with imaginary people and tells people in wheelchairs "don't jump"....then these people should get their discharge upgraded.
This is inadequate and wrong. Why does anyone not qualify for benefits! They all went through basic training. They wore the uniform proudly. They put in their time and heart and soul to keep us safe. Give them their due and do it now.
As an heterosexual Viet Nam era veteran, I fully support those honorable servicemen and servicewomen. They fought, accomplished their duties, and many risked their lives. They deserve full restoration of their rights as veterans without any delay.
And thank you for your service.
My brother had this happen to him, he was in a relationship with his superior officer, who coincidentally had nothing to happen to him. Because of the continuous issues with being able to find employment because of this issue I’m sure that it was probably some one of the many stresses that contributed to him unaliving himself.
Deepest sympathy
THANK YOU CBS MORNINGS YOU ALWAYS HAVE STORYS THAT TOUCH OUR SOUL
True! I’m glad I found this 🇺🇸🙏
These men and women gave their time, family and soul to the U.S. Military. It wasn't a long time ago when Women and African Americans weren't allowed to serve. The world never ended when people married outside their race, but everyone deserves the opportunity to be happy. Every generation will fight against ignorance, so please continue to build a better avenue for the new generation.

So wild and disgraceful. People that volunteered to serve their country told that they aren't allowed to anymore and must be kicked out by politicians that almost always haven't served a day in their lives. Not only that, but having your entire life ruined by an OTH discharge on your DD214.
That's NOT right that they are fighting for things that non gay get easily. I hope this helps those fighting for what is rightfully theirs. I hope this brings light to those doing wrong to service members. They risked their lives and the least the government could do is give these service members what they are asking for. They deserve what is promised at signing. 🛐💔🙏🏻
WE LOVE OUR TROOPS IM SORRY YOUR A TRUE AMERICAN SUPER HERO👌
Let them be happy they aren't hurting anyone
Thank You Good Americans for Your Service...🇺🇸
I remember its was horrible
SALUTE TO ALL OUR TROOPS LGBTQS WE LOVE YOU
Espinosa flew 21 combat missions. Govt- Military better up their game "intellectually". You're THROWING AWAY HEROS. 🇺🇸
At the same time many branches of our military were actively sweeping sexual assaults of female enlisted members under the rug. Often transferring the female victim to another base and doing nothing about the person who attacked her. Thankfully one of the first questions now asked when seeing many VA PCP's and other specialists is if there was ever a sexual assault during military service. It doesn't wipe the pain or injustice away. Just as changing the discharge status of gay service members won't take away years of discrimination due to their discharge status doesn't. But it's a start. We live and learn.
Horrible and Disgusting Story.
Iam gay, so thank you for bringing this to light!!🙂🙂❤️💯
I'm a navy veteran who served during the DADT. I got kicked out in 2002
The court martial courts for ARMY homosexual offenses in the pacific was in SAN FRANCISCO after being convicted and discharged the gay soldiers could not go home so most stayed there, and that is how San Franciscos gay community had its origin
3:19 civil rights/rights for all Americans/seeking to end racism and bring justice to enslaved cultures - “in order to be able to move forward and embrace the future, you can’t just push the past aside”
That is just horrible
First off, anyone should be allowed to serve their country. We let foreign nationals serve, extending a promise of U.S. citizenship if they do. However, I still can't believe no one has commented on the double entendre involved in this. 😲😳
No one said, what do you say when you certainly will be asked… what do you do, who do you turn to, who are your allies = no one ❤❤ I served under DADT, went to Captains Mast for homosexual conduct, but fortunately & by Gods Grace, was Honorably Discharged. And I’m now living my life authentically as a Queer Black Transgender Man. ✊🏿 keep fighting for our rights & the rights of those before & after us 🫡 Sept. 6, 2001- Sept. 5, 2005, got out and fought to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” We should all strive for 🟰 Liberty 🗽 equality & justice for all
STUNNING AND BRAVE😂😂
Not surprised. 🙄
I would let them run point and let them pack there own parachutes if they think they are so great
🌈 RAINBOW MAGIC 🎩 STRONG 💪 ✨ 💜💙💚💛🧡❤🤍🖤🤎
Say from them discharging them I would have them talk about all the sex scandals in the drugs that go on in military stuff that they're covering up.
Basically fighting the historical “standard”: Male , white, heterosexual (divorced ok), their version of Christian, English speaking. Since the constitution was written. Everyone else needs to prove themselves.
#DONTASK#DONTTELL
GAYS IN THE ARMY WAS COMMON IN THE 1960S But they were Still Good SOLDIERS.
The dd214 is proof of honorable discharge it’s size if driver’s license
😐
Just remember this! Alexander the Great was Bisexual, and the greatest military leader in World History!!!
It's just an excuse no to pay up 🤷 it's not about being gay, it's a way to save $$. My opinion anyways
Republicans will call fighting for our vets woke.
I WAS TOLD I DIDN'T HAVE THE EDUCATION........SO WHATS THE DIFFERENCE
American military leadership got Afghanistan, Iraq and Ukraine right so I'm sure they'll fix this, too.
You’re more than welcome in the No Limit Army under the command of Master P.
If the government and military wasn’t so shady internally and in every single dealing, then more people would enlist. Everyone doesn’t care anymore and no one wants to deal with these pointless wars and experience needless deaths
Don't ask,don't tell.
Its easy to spot one. They're always asking to hit the showers
benefits are for married man and wife !!
Sorry, but at that time the rules were clear, a don't ask don't tell policy was in place and if you didn't abide by that policy you had repercussions. And it wasn't like it was never told to anyone, you heard it and could read it somewhere at least once a week.
@Follow the howl They knowingly choose a relationship over a career and they got kicked out. Personal choices sometimes have consequences, and this time it is for military members who did not abide by the policy. And to be honest, not a very hard policy to follow. 'Dont ask don't tell" is pretty cut and dry if you ask me.
@@OriginalJohnDoeFakersBeware The argument isn't mute. I'm just stating facts but as always people like you can't handle them.
They broke the rules. Being Gay does not exempt you from he RULES
Yup
I personally dont want people around me who dont feel the same way about all this weirdness people.
I am not gay but they deserve to be acknowledged and benefits and respect. Good people
Moderator of CZcams?
@@suzanne296 I dont feel the same way. Can someone have a different opinion?
@@susansantana4454 Honey. Name calling and insults are classic signs of dementia.
@@ChosenOne6666 🤣🤣🤣 I'm asking a question you tool, hence the question mark!! Yeah I think I'll just report you as you seem to be an agitator and nothing more. Shhh...sit down!
Enough usa gay propaganda 👎👎👎
Lol, its not Propoganda its reality….Gays are 10% of the population. Stop living w ur eyes closed , are you 85 years old.
Get used to it. Theres much more coming!
There has always been gay people in the military they were just closeted. Booo hooo about your feelings about it.
Enough with your homophobia
That thought is genocide. That was hitlers mindset.
