- Lidl Parkside Arc Welder review PESG 120 B3. These cost around £40 from Lidl when they are in.
It's tricky to weld thin stuff with arc welders but with care and practice it can be done.
Also the current version is due in UK shops on the 18th of February 2021.
Just an update, I am currently welding up a lathe stand for an Atlas 10 with a 54" bed (36" between centres) and I am using this welder. When I am using it right it really does weld well. If people would like I will post an update.
You will not find a better welder for this price.

I did weld up a lathe stand in 3"x2" box steel of about 3mm thick. This welder did it all without issue apart from occasionally throwing it's thermal trip for a while.

I'm thinking to buy do you recommended for a diy? I'm 1 beginner to welding I did just watch some video online and I'm thinking of buying this and about the way do you recommande ingco automatica darken welder halmet? It's very cheap but Chinese what do you think? Many thanks
@@faroukchehata2431 I don't know where this one was made but it is a solid transformer one so is fairly heavy especially for it's size. As a beginner, yes I would recommend it for the £40 Lidl sell it for, Yes, I would also recommend an auto darkening helmet, the ones last on sale need a battery and if you don't turn it off the batteries will run flat.
In order to learn, find a scrap metal dealer, but some scrap sheet, box and tube steel from 1.5 mm to 6mm and welding rods (Toolstation are cheap.)

Good review. I've just ordered myself one off eBay as lidl aren't stocking them at the moment. Paid £65 but I think it's worth it. The parkside range of tools are fantastic for the price. Can't wait to get it. Compaired to my current dinosaur of an arc welder, this is so much smaller, lighter and compact. Cheers.
Shame that you didn't manage to get one from Lidl, much cheaper and easier on the warranty. Enjoy!

@@BensWorkshop I know, I've waited for months but I either missed them or they haven't had them in for over a year or so. The guy on eBay must of stock piled them while he could, he seems to of sold a few, brand new unopened. Knowing my luck I'll receive the welder and Lidl will get them in stock 😂 hopefully not. But either way, £65 hasn't broke the bank, it'll pay for itself twice over with one build and sale. Hopefully mine works as well as yours :) thanks for the reply. Ps, have subbed, great channel 🙏

@@BensWorkshop it's a shame they don't stock stuff like that more often, and once they do they're snapped up! Hope you manage to get hold of a compressor. I was tempted to get the flux core MIG welder when they had it in stock, wish I'd of got one now just because they're so cheap!

@@BensWorkshop I just got myself an old fashion leather hood with auto tint because I'd got spatter in my ear again.
It works beautifuly, having my eyes right up against the glass.
There's something about the smell you get from molten metal in the ear whilst you are lying on the ground under a car with a stream of water running down your neck isn't there?

They do some really good value tools at Lidl - I haven't tried one of their welders. I'm trying to make up my mind if the lack of a fully variable current would be better or worse for a beginner - personally I'd find it frustrating but it would be one less thing for them to get lost in the settings. Top tip for someone new to welding - get a proper welding mask, just do it, don't mess around with a hand held shield.
True about the mask, I have an auto dimmer one, but if you've only lust been able to buy that set up you might not be able to afford the mask as well (though it only costs £23 from Lidl).
I find that welder OK though I would prefer the solid state ones as they have a higher starting voltage.
@@BensWorkshop I had a very minor accident using a hand held shield years ago - completed a weld and immediately removed the shield from my face as you do when hand holding the shield, and a bit of slag flew off the contracting weld straight into my eye - quick trip to hospital and some eye drops later, everything was fine but I went out and bought a very basic mask (not auto dimming). Only got a auto dimming mask 2 years ago.
@@GrumpyTim that's interesting and an argument for wearing safety goggles as well as using a mask.
@@BensWorkshop Good point, I've never worn safety goggles as well as a mask for welding but I do exactly that when I'm cutting metal for fabricating using an Evolution Mitre Saw - the cuttings tend to bounce off the back of the machine into my face, so I wear a full face clear mask plus safety goggles - much more comfortable and I can concentrate on what I'm cutting rather than trying to dodge the fallout.
I do like the Evolution mitre saw. Built my shed with it.

It isn't bad for a cheapie. I'll order up some 1.6mm rods from Amazon (only place I can get them) and try the thin stuff with that.
@@BensWorkshop I used to use arch welders then decided to go to the mig machines. The only problem I had with arch was me blowing holes everywhere. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
MIG is much easier on thin stuff (I have a MIG welder I picked up from the tip) but arc is great for thicker stuff.
When running a 6013 electrode have the electrode at 25 - 30 degrees. But keep a short arc. Problem with having just 2 presets. You dont really have the option to finer tuning. The arc looks really agressive. To much heat. Its spattering like a gooden.
It is a very cheap welder, so you pays your money and takes your choice, though I also reviewed another one, which also cost me £40 here:

whats the amperage of the Parkside Arc Welder
It does 80 amps and 120 amps and runs off a 13 amp supply. Hope that helps. It only has 2 settings.

I decided to do a CZcams search before buying one and came across this video, I'm new to the whole welding game but I've brought myself one of these and I'm planning to weld together some mild steel boxes 5mm thick and 50mm x 50mm, do you think this will do the job?
Yes, but you'd find 3mm thick much easier. I welded up a table for my Atlas 10 which weighs in at 354lb in 75x50 mm 3mm thick box and it went together really easily.
However, firstly buy some scrap and practice. Or get some offcuts of what you are welding and weld them together. And for that you will want 2.5 mm rods, you can get a 5kg box from Toolstation for £10. Lastly, I'd buy the automatic welding helmet.
Lastly 2, the welder will thermal cut out after 15 or so minutes. Have a tea break, work in a well ventilated area as well.

I've taken notes and will go ahead and make them purchases, I checked the table you made and it is pretty much similar to what I'm trying to make, I also have some 3mm thick mild steel, so will probably go with that and give it a few test runs with offcuts before starting the actual project.

Hi there, would this be suitable for doing exhausts? If so what rod is needed?
I'd be inclined to say no. Exhausts are normally fairly thin and you are after a gas tight seal. Unless you have had enough practice you'd find stick welding difficult on an exhaust frustrating and difficult though it would be easier than car body welding.
That said it also depends on what part of what exhaust.

i can gas and MIG weld really well, but arc welding is soooo difficult I can't do it
Nah. It's just a matter of conquering the unknown. Go find a metal scrap merchant/yard and buy some metal, get some 2 and 2.5 mm rods from Toolstation (£10 for 5KG) and have a practice.

Should be fine for that though I can't seem to find 1.6mm rods at either Toolstation or Screwfix.
I'll let you know when I see them coming up as I keep an eye out for what is in Lidl.

Mate I just made a video on a little 140amp dc inverter mig welder of Amazon for £99 which is impressive for the cost would be great for any beginner welders on a budget.

The gloves are good, but the the gear u are wear is an accident waiting to happen, also throw that kamakasi 🛡 shield in the nearest bin. Also when welding anchor properly the material you are welding to the bench it may help the rod from sticking. Otherwise you done your best. Muchas gracias 😎. Liam kilkee clare
I have plenty of good masks. Most people who buy a cheap welder will not and will use what is in the box.
Whilst they are not good or great, they do work.
Sorry, I didn't understood what size of rods you are using.
For thin sheet 1.6 mm 6013 rod at the low setting, for the thick stuff 2.5 mm 6013 at the high setting rod and 2 mm for everything in between.
