I agree that the fall colour of Euonymus alatus is a little tough to take. However, you may wish to try our native burning bush: Euonymus atropurpureus. Its fall colours are bold, but not tacky.
Definitely, I do like the wahoo or Euonymus atropurpureus! I've been wanting to obtain some seeds from one but apparently there's an Asian/European one E. europaeus or spindle tree that has become invasive in the east and they are very hard to tell apart.
Yes, I have heard it can be invasive in some areas. It's not readily available in my neck of the woods so that hasn't happened here. If it does produce berries I'll be sure to dispose of them!

It's much smaller and compact compared to many other Nandina!
Nice! The Firepower cultivar is supposed to be way less invasive than the straight species.
