I say it again, as a student I learn from your teacher.
Add a in line gas shut off valve feeding the carburetor
Now this is the type of repair I JUST LOVE!!!!!!!!!! SIMPLE!!!!!!
Awesome glad you liked it my friend. Rooster gave a huge shout out to ya this morning. I must say you are doing a great job!! Proud to call you my friend.
Excellent! It works! I did put a fuel line shut off valve between the carburetor and fuel pump. When done mowing I just shut off my gas and let it run out! Never get back fire and ready for winter storage every time I'm done mowing. (No gas sitting in the carburetor) 😅
Thank you Mr. Raley! My daughter's tractor was getting hard to start and your excellent video was the solution. You are The Man! Well done Sir! I removed the solenoid without removing the carburetor. The solenoid was stuck in the closed position. I removed the rubber tip, pushed the metal plunger in the open position and disconnected the wire. After reassembly, the mower started on the first try! Thank you very much for your help! I wish you all the best.
Sadly, this all went over my head. I dont Know the difference between a carburetor, alternator, or solenoid LOL. Handy I am not.
i had the same problem. Took the solenoid off and cut it off just like he showed. put a fuel shutoff valve on the fuel line. no problem since.
Wow!! I think that maybe you just fixed my old Poulan rider that I use to get me around my little farm since my health has gotten worse. At 71 yrs old I'm going to give this a try tomorrow morning. Thankks.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. We hope this helps you out.
@@RaleysSmallEngines Well, I just took of the solenoid and disconnected the wire from the bottom and checked the plunger in the solenoid and it now makes the clicking sound when I turn the key to the first position. I also used carb cleaner to get out any dirt and hooked the gas line back up. Getting a good stream of gas through the line. I also poked a wire in the gas cap to clean out those holes but it still won't start, acts like it wants to but it won't start. Also has a brand new battery changed out two days ago. So, if I have good gas flow, the plunger is working freely, and the solenoid is clicking when the key is turned----what should I check next? Thank you for any assistance.
@@karenwilkinson2632 give it a shot of Flammable brake cleaner, carb cleaner or squirt som gas into the carb. On the air intake side of the carburetor. See if it fires off, if it does, it's internal carb issue. I have a video of " why your lawnmower will not start" . It's on a zero turn but that doesn't matter the process is the same
What you are looking for is about 9 minutes into that video.
This fix just fixed mine. Thank you for the help.
Thank you so much. Your help was absolutely spot on correct. You made it easy to understand and i followed your advise and steps and now the ole red is alive again.
In the process of repairing a 15HP Kohler that has not run for a year replaced the starter and a few other bits saw your video and it helped a lot thanks a lot
Love thank you for acknowledging the fact some of just need to cut our lawns and don’t have to always do things the “right” way
This guy is awesome 🤣
THANK YOU! You saved us a lot of time and money. We couldn't figure out why our Troybilt Pony wouldn't start, and watching your video and following your instructions did the trick! Thank you so much!
Awesome, glad it helped you out. 😀
Help me a whole lot and explains why mower just quit when just got done mowing the whole lawn. Thank You again :)
Same thing happened to me.
I got a stanley 42 in mower (just a murray basically) we've had since 2001 with a Tecumseh engine, the carburetor is much easier to get to but is doing this exact thing from the start of your video.
I had to change the drive belt, but a 22 year old mower... working on it by yourself with no help is a pain.
Thank you!
Thanks I learned some good stuff here. My 11 yr old mower came with the property and I think they disconnected that solenoid. I didn't know what it was there for, maybe a gas shutoff switch. Anyway I noticed gas leaking on the ground when it was just sitting so I put in a fuel cut off valve ahead of the fuel filter and that took care of the float bowl leaking.
Straight up ,good diagnoses ,easy fix ,you should move around the block from Me
Definitely helped out.
Awesome!!!
Thanks alot help so much.
Very informative and simple. I will be trying this as my next step to get mine working.
You CAN fix it !! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. Thank you
I've just spent the last few days,, well a few hours each day going over the "Horse" I was given with a "Please fixit" attached. Having never worked on this type of machine before,, you guessed it. Found a loose wire running over the engine and down to that area. A green ground wire cut and hanging, so with all the different colored and spliced wiring, yep I did it, crimped an eyelet on the wire and promptly secured it to the frame. "Pop" goes the 20 amp fuse. I do have tools and 40 years of working on many various types of equipment, Guess I's a gettin a bit to smart fer me britches. I down load the wiring schematic, and look-er over. OK, one of the things I was going to do anyway was drop the carb and clean it. Yes the machine had a build date 12-09 so while I was in there I carefully remove what was left of the gaskets, both.and hand made replacements. I did the carb removal a bit differently, got the grinder lined up and made an axcess "notch" on that top lip of the frame. While carb was off, I filed down the sharp edges and found an old can of VHT gloss black and now looks like factory new. While carb was apart I saw the silinoid plunger. Someone had beat me to it, the rubber was gone and shaft was much shorter. Put it all back together and starts right away now. I won't bore ya'll with the 19 other items that got my attention but think the battery is on shakey ground too. I charget it ALL the way up, drive it around a bit 10-15 mins. Then next day it gets 1/2 a turn over then not enough umpff to spin the engine over.. Back to the charger, and 5-10 mins later we good and going. I think if I can get that teenager to plug on the new 3amp trickle charger EVERY time, they might get through the rest of this season.
One more issue, found some gas leaking on to the floor a couple days then I got a fuel shut off valve for between the gas tank and carb. It looks like fuel is slowly running out of the what ever that contraption is that sits above the muffler,,, yeah,,,, I know,,, It seems to do much better with that added shut off valve while sitting. No more leaking over night.
I'll save the other 18 issues for next time.
Happy trails
Dennis
That’s is exactly what my mower is doing. I’m going to try this
Hope it helps you out my friend.
Easy fix there mr Raley. Those seem to fail alot on rider engines. You gave the best advice when you said idle the engine down before shutting it off.👍🇺🇸 Roger
Thank you Roger
Yes that dang thing is in hard place. Having to disassemble half the frame! Lol
Thank you!
I suspect this was the problem with my 19 horse Troy-Bilt, when I tried to move it out of a storage shed. It had fuel to the carb, and fired when I squirted starter fluid. I didn't bother screwing around with it; I popped a beer and brought up Amazon on my laptop. For $20.99, I bought a kit on sale that included a complete carburetor and the three associated gaskets, an air filter, a pre-filter sponge, a fuel filter, a spark plug, and even a valve cover gasket. I have Amazon Prime, and the package got tossed over my fence early the next afternoon.
Since I was replacing all three gaskets anyway, I removed the bolt holding the spacer and ground wire, and twisted the old carb up until the solenoid cleared the bracket. Took me about twenty minutes to install the new one and put everything back together, and it fired right up.
Of course, there have been times in my life when I wouldn't have had $20.99 to throw at a problem... in which case, a video like this would've come in right handy.
Thanks T-Bone on the solenoid switch on bottom of float bowl im going to do the same to my kohler thank you.
Great step by step informative video!
Excellent video! Very helpful!
Thank you
Thank you my friend I'm going to give it a go at it.
Your so right what brainiac thought that bolt weirdness was good idea. I like your straight forward no bull common sense approach cause that ain't common these days.
Thank you sir!! This is exactly what was wrong with mine!! Youre awesome!!
GOOD VIDEO Thanks Ed Loretto Ontario Canada
Fuel, spark, pressure. One of those 3 missing it will never run. That never fails. apply to all engine except diesel. Yes that applies to auto and truck too. Just today i fix mine the Toro with the Kohler SV600 courage engine. Have fuel, spark low compression pressure. Crank but won't run. I remove valve cover and check valve lash. Out of whack thus causing the low compression pressure. I redo the gap pressure shots up and when everything is hooked up. crank right up.
These engines are super simple to work on. Fuel, spark, pressure simple as that and never fails.
There are a lot of people rushing out and buy a new one costing thousand of dollars. Yep wasting their money when a simple fix will do.
Good job. Exactly what I would’ve done!
Very good. This may be my problem exactly. I’ll see tomorrow.
Hope it helps
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend
My 12 year old kohler engine did the same thing yesterday. My carberator was a little different but I did what you said today and it started right up. Thank you so do much.
Thank you, glad it helped my friend
Be sure to add a fuel shut off valve. When you disable the solenoid via cutting the plunger there is a chance it will fill the whole crankcase with gas.
Quick easy fix. I do. It all the time. Thanks for sharing that quick easy fix brother 🔧👍
Thanks for watching my friend
I really thank you for the tip.
Thank you for the info
Thank you this worked on mine
Learning so much from you.
Thank you for this, you helped me out
Thank you Sir!!! I appreciate you.

Wow thank you so much for your kind words my friend.
Helped alot
Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting. Remember to subscribe. It's Free
Thanks this helps me out alot. Got the same exact mower I'm trying to fix for a buddy.
Great job on the solenoid disable. Don't need all these items to complicate things. You make great how to videos
If you add an in-line fuel cut off valve you would idle engine down then close valve. Engine would run until small amount of fuel is used up. No back fires.
We do that on every machine forgot to mention in the video. Thank you 😊
Thanks just what I needed to know 👍
You the man !
Thank you for this video!!! Your awesome!
You are welcome. Thanks so much for watching my friend.
Awesome!!! Going to give it a try
Thank you! If I'd seen this a couple of weeks ago I'd have saved quite a bit of $$ and time. BUT...a person can get a whole new carb with new solenoid off of Amazon for $16 to $20. *That's* a pretty cheap fix, easy remove and replace, and retain the anti-backfire. (I completely agree about the stupid design for the one carb bolt.)
I really enjoy your videos. Thanks Raileys
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing 👍🏿
thats my problem gonna solve it tomorrow thx boss
Crap. It wouldn’t fire up. Just fired up 2 secs when sprayin starter fluid
very good video
Thanks
Thank you that was perfect I do understandYou’ve been a lot of help
Awesome thank you 😊
Thanks, fixed my issue on 2011 pony.
Heck ya thank you
Now that was quick! I would have never known!!
Thank you, hope it helps. Thanks so much for watching my friend
@@RaleysSmallEngines it will definitely be in my mind if I come across this issue!
Thanks for the heads-up I was about to
Call the local Troy Built parts distributor for a whole new carburetor
My mower is during the same it’s a 19.5
hp Kohler engine just like the one you
In your demonstrated.
V😅ery good videos sr 😊thanks a lot
Mr. Raley i have that exact mower and have been screwing with it for 4 days trying to figure this out,saw your video and did exactly what you did in the dark with a flashlight and she came to life.i felt so stupid i didnt think to do that, thank you sir this helped me out so much.awesome fix
Yeah!!!!! So happy for you! Glad it helped you out my friend. Thank you so much for watching our channel.
@@RaleysSmallEngines will this same method work on the Pony model?
Works for me. TKY.
Great video thanks
I will try that loved the video sir.
Useful video
Thanks for the video! Time to see if that's what's wrong with my mower!
You are welcome! You can do it! If you have any problems we have many other videos that may help. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
@@RaleysSmallEngines Fixed my problem on a toro running a courage 21 hp. Took 5 minutes with your instruction. I've had a professional shop work on it twice and they missed it both times. LOL
@@kennethcargill3512 that's great!! Glad our video helped you out my friend
I’m having same thing happening with my grand fathers 2011 Husqvarna with the Kohler courage it cranks fine and if i pull the air filter and spray something into intake it starts . i’m going to check and do the same trick you did . Thanks
I like videos from someone who really knows what they're doing unlike myself. Lol. Take care and thanks again. Keep em coming and I'll keep watching
Thanks so much brother
@@RaleysSmallEngines you're welcome. I really mean it too. You're one if not the most professional best smal engine technician on here. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
@@Lovinflyindrones2022 thank you William I really appreciate it.
Right on , might be due for a valve adjustment too
I was fixing a freebie courage engine and that gasket was ripped that holds the stud in. I fought trying to get that carb recounted for over an hour but I finally got it haha
Dang, yes it's a terrible design. Glad ya got it fixed
I have found that just removing the solenoid then the carb will slide right off
grasias amigo, this video it helped me a lot
De nada amigo
Genius‼️
Great video my friend! Just snip it and send it…
Thanks KB
Thanks for the info. I did what you said. My question is does the ground have to he disconnected for the mower to start because mine does not start after doing this fix
2 years on and still handy Thank you from 🦘🐨 over the ditch
Thanks for commenting! Glad we could help you out.
I've got to try this when i get back home it may be my problem also
How's she goin'? Now that's the way to fix this issue if you don't want the solenoid. Sometimes I think those anti-backfire solenoids are more bother than they're worth!!! Thanks for sharing and take care!!!
Yes sir agreed. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch our video my friend.
I jave dine the same Tin in the past, and will do IT again too
Heck Yeah
GOOD JOB
Thanks so much
Hmm same damn problem. I’ll go try it
great
well, heck yeah Daddy Rabbit that sure took care of that problem.... uuuummm yo carb work bench is on fire... FYI
What??? Again??? Lol Just covering up a customer tag that picked up earlier. Thanks for watching brother
Sweet
Pulled k engine and installed a v b/s rebuilt engine
Runs great now
Yea I got the same problem on this Troy bilt I got free
Nice
Just had to replace one on the same engine in a Husqvarna. I noticed the Husqvarna I worked on didn’t have a heat shield over the muffler. I bet that’s a big contributor for these to go out. This has one but it’s not doing that carb any good.
Yes sir, I agree 100% thanks for watching my friend
You might want to integrate a fuel shut off valve now...
Yes we did. Thanks for watching my friend
My Husqvarna has this same engine and problem, except I can get to the solenoid without taking off a bracket. Starts up with brake cleaner in the carb, new spark plug, trickle charged battery, oil changed + filter, fuel drained and replaced. Im hoping it's just this issue. Thanks, you really helped me narrow it down.
Thank you glad it helped my friend
Can you help? I have a lawn tractor with the Courage 15 engine. I started it this year and it blew smoke. Figured it might be the solenoid, so I replaced the carb and serviced it (including a new plug and checked gap and spark) - also added a fuel cut off.
Now it will only start with some carb cleaner sprayed into the inlet. I tried removing the plunger from the solenoid in the old carb to rule out the wiring to the solenoid. But it's still the same.
It seems to run well when it's started, but I could sit on the starter all day and it won't fire. Any ideas?
AWEWOME PRESENTATION!!!!!! To the point and well made video. loved every second of it. Hey man I just picked up a 2006 Craftsman YS 4500 20 horse Briggs + Stratton. It turns over but won't fire. The solenoid doesn't click as your video explains. However When I squirt starting fluid in air filter port nothing. I bypassed the seat safety switch. The Plug was very oil fowled. Cleaned it but still no fire. What is the best way to check to see if I'm getting fire to the plug?
Remove the wire from coil. If it fires it's a safety safety switch if not it's a coil.
@@RaleysSmallEngines Thanks Bro
So this is what Ron White has been up to.
I have a YT300 Craftsman with the same Kohler twin cam and same problem..won't start. ..lile not enough fuel.
Solenoid seems to be working but was really really plugged. I think I'll just cut it since I install a fuel shut off .
I'll let you know if bbn it works
My solenoid fried while mowing and started smoking/smoldering. I did this trick. But you need to have a fuel shut off valve installed. It will eventually allow fuel to fill the crankcase on some models of engines.
Also acknowledged by me this weekend. If you put a fuel cut off upstream of your fuel filter. Your cut off valve becomes your first filtration device and can clog your fuel flow even when the valve is open.
My eng was leaking gas while sitting, so I put the fuel shut off valve to stop that. Thought maybe the valve that controls the float bowl level was dirty or bad. I believe my used mower already had the solenoid unplugged.
That electric valve isn't a valve, it's a solenoid. Nope doesn't stop that issue, it's an anti backfire solenoid. Your issue is a carburetor needle and seat. If you have a Nikki carburetor throw it in the trash and watch my latest video.
How do you replace the gasket that holds the intake bolt in place?
If your doing this at home as diy make sure you add fresh gas if it's been sitting for a while before bad old gas loses its ability to run the engine get the old gas out it may start with just fresh gas may be all you need
Mine sounds the same starting but the solenoid looks brand new. I did notice when I tap the solenoid it almost starts to crank. I looked up replacement “solenoid” for my model but nothing looks similar to what’s on my mower.
That was a nice quick fix there brother! Was it just me or were there some creepy crawlies under the flywheel at the end. It could be that elusive electrical gremlin......lol
Thanks detective. I must have missed that in the editing. Gonna have to check it out, got me curious now. Great observation brother.
Just saw it WOW!! I saw him peek his head out!! The Detective at work, Awesome
