2. Hours in Switzerland
- Switzerland is an early country
- Cafes open early
- Stores close early
- Some cities know a thing called - "evening shopping" literally translated. Shops are open until 21:00 (9 PM) on one evening per week - in Zürich, this happens on Thursday.
- And nearly everything is closed on Sunday (except the trains and shops in train stations)

- Second Class is pretty good
4. Money in Switzerland
- They don’t use the EUR, they use the Swiss Franc (CHF) but you can exchange Euro at any bank, airport, and most railway stations. ATMs are known as “Bancomats”
5. Switzerland is Expensive
- Yes, what you’ve heard about Switzerland being expensive is right. It is.
- Pizza $30
- Mcdonalds $15
- Minimum wage of $25 an hour
6. Swiss Food
- Eat the chocolate and cheese
- Drink the milk
- All things Dairy
- lunch specials 10-19 CHF.
- Ethnic Restaurants like Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indian, or Thai for the best deals (and closer to 10 CHF).
- Don’t be late for a dinner reservation -- after 15 minutes you should forget you even had it
7. Switzerland is Small
- Population of 8 Million
- 1/10 the size of California
- But many mountains so travel is slow
- Geneva to Zurich Driving is 3 hours
8. Weather
- Quite varied because of the Alps
- In the West it’s windy and wet because of the Atlantic Ocean
- South is significantly warmer
- Summer can be up to 35C or 95F -- zero degrees depends on elevation, between 2000 Meters and 4000 Meters.
- Each Mountain has it’s own website -- check the mountain website to decide whether to go or not
- High elevation so wear sunscreen

- Fountains on almost every corner

I'm Swiss and I want to mention 3 things
1. Good Job :)
2. There is no tax on the plastic bottles this is simply not true. Buy your bottled water in a grocery and its almost the same price as in the US (1.5 liters for 0.5 CHF)
3. If you want to eat good and not that expensive, step out of the touristic hotspots and you will find your Pizza margarita for 12-14 CHF.

The 8.5 % is tax.
Tipping here in switzerland is really your choice. They wont look bad at you for not tipping. But i would recommend if you've found your service to be really good, i would recommend to tip the waitress.

There is a service charge included in your bill in many Swiss restaurants. Many of their menus just tell you this.

The tax including in the bill is now by 7.8 %. This is not a service charge. Its set up by swiss to raise money for the country for diffrent investments and improvements for the country itself. You will find this tax by anything you buy ( no diffrent if it is a restaurant a grocery store clothes or anything else.) . You dont have to tip if you dont want to its your choice but if you liked the service that was given to you an you wanna show that your thankfull be sure to leave some small tip.
Oh and that guy over my comments was in a other land or in a really strange restaurant. Land were service is included are countrys like french italy or tscheckey.

Eating. Breakfast at the hotel (included), lunch from the local CoOp (grocery store - prices comparable to the US) - find a scenic place to park (not very hard) and have a nice picnic lunch. Dinner - yeah - in a restaurant and pricey, but you compensated for that with breakfast & lunch. Been spending time in Switzerland almost every summer for the past 15 years.

*Food Prices*: Yes, prices for food are expensive in Switzerland. But what's _most_ expensive is eating out. For Swiss people, eating out isn't nearly as commonplace as it is in the US, it's more something we do on special occasions. So if you're on a budget, consider buying meats, cheese and bread in a supermarket, and making sandwiches for lunch. And if your accomodation includes a kitchen or a common room to prepare food, you can save a lot by preparing your own food (like store bought pasta and a sauce).
But the tip with cafeteria-style restaurants in department stores definitely is a good one, those indeed tend to be quite a bit cheaper.
Eating out was very common 15 yeas ago. It is the EUR/CHF rates change to be blamed. Euro has lost 40% against Swiss franc. Price is more but income less.
Agreed! When we went we did eat out, but we also cooked some of our own food which was a good balance between tasting the local cuisine Vs not spending too much of our cash! Amazing places to eat though.

It's VAT, and water bottles have no charge on it, you just bought it on a Kiosk. In Coop or Migros you get 9 Liters for 1.50
For the weather I recommend the MeteoSwiss app. Int. apps are inaccurate.

Completely agree with the comment in the video about the public transport. It was amazing. We spent our time in Interlaken and in the BERN region. So we got the BERN regional pass which was awesome. We paid one price for the pass and then was able to travel so much using the pass!

If you are in Switzerland ask Swiss people. Of course there are clubs and bars. And a great variety in style and music. But they are usually not in the historic buildings in the center. And of course not in small villages.

Hint: In german, the "Z" is pronounced as a sharp "ts".
The word means arsenal. So it's the warehouse where the local army unit stored its weapons and other equipment. From the looks of it, I'm guessing 19th century.
btw. "Zeug" literaly means "stuff" today. But back in "ye olde days" its meaning was closer to "gear/equipment" and "Haus" means- you guessed it - "house" (it's even pronounced the same way). So, it's a house to house your stuff...
Also: Yea, ACs are still not too common in switzerland. The reason is, that our buildings are traditonaly designed to use passive air conditioning.
With both exterior and interior walls build form solid brick, the building's structure itself will act as a heat sink. Absorbing heat during the day and releasing it over night.
It works, as long as the ambient temprature drops below room temprature during the night.

If you want cheap trains, book 30 days in advance and you get 50% off the regular fares. The tickets are non-transferable though.
Swiss food is the total opposite of Singapore, so expensive! I'm gonna skimp and do supermarkets to get me by lol

That's a good tip! Supermarkets! Most hotel rooms had a microwave and several places we stayed actually had a little kitchenette. We would buy soup at the market and have a cheap evening meal.
This is a refreshingly different vid on Switzerland: it's concise, for one, and ACCURATE for the most part. Never noticed the lack of small talk, though. Any conversation wraps up with multiple, repetitive courtesy phrases: "Danke! Merci vielmal! Danke schön! Ade! Uf wiederleuge! Schön Abig no'!

Affordable accomodation in Zurich (and some other cities): Swiss Star. It's all over Zurich (and greater Zurich area), basic, clean, and really cheap (for Switzerland).

Nice complilation, funny to watch if you're Swiss like me... ;) One little misstake: We don't have tax on water bottles (PET). They're just really expensive, if you buy them at a kiosk or a cafe. Better go to a supermarket, there you can buy 1.5 Liter of bottled water for 60 Rp. (Cents). But yeah, even better, you can drink the water from every fountain and tub (except in trains!), the water quality is really good.

Great tips! I'll keep these in mind for when I decide to visit Switzerland someday. I had no idea on how warm it can get there in the summer although it doesn't surprise me too much since it was warm (at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit or 27 degrees Celsius) when I was in Slovenia. I think that was around the same time when you were over in Switzerland.
Scottman895 Travel you have a high chance for over 30 degrees celsius during summer (june, july, august, even september can be very warm, over 25 degrees)

Another cheaper place to eat on the move can be at the booths in the train stations. There are usually a variety of ethnic foods there for CHF 7-12 and make a filling lunch. Also wherever you stay visitors are given a free local bus pass for the local area. This saved me E50 over 4 days in Lucerne.

I've found your tips helpful. I'm planning on taking my first European vacation in December and I've chosen a small town in Switzerland. There's a saying that we have two kinds of money: our regular money and the money we spend on vacation. If restaurants are a little pricier than what I pay in Florida, that's okay with me as I'm only going to be there for a week.
There is never a need to tip in Switzerland like it is in the US, because the salaries are higher. But the waitress will love it anyway if you do tip.

A waitress get between 4000chf-4500 chf per month
And that’s not a lot
If you take in consideration the insurance, the taxes and the rent, you will have 500.- left

No thats not true you have to tip its normal here in Switzerland. yeah the salaries are higher but the cost of living in Switzerland is wayy higher than in the most ohter countrys so you should relly relly tip if you are in a restaurant! They dont get paid much in comparing what it costs to live here.

*Money Exchange*: Avoid the dedicated currency exchange booths at the train stations. They often have significant fees, you usually get much better rates if you simply walk a couple blocks to any regular bank and exchange your money there.

I love Switzerland! But, I have to admit, most of the hotels where we stayed had no air conditioning and the humidity made it a little uncomfortable for me at night in the summer. The plus side to this was that their aren't many mosquitoes in the mountains and you can leave your windows open at night!

Swiss travel pass also covers a lot of museums. Also food prices depend on whether there's a lot of tourists going there. If it's slightly out of the way, it's just as tasty and cheaper. But otherwise, great video!
Depends what train you take for example here in Geneva the public transportation with "leman express" is quiet bad for the moment.

Swiss here... 🚗 Two important things to know if you drive a car in Switzerland 🚙
1.) It’s a law that you *HAVE TO* drive with headlights *on.* It’s forbidden to drive without lights, doesn’t matter if it’s daytime or nighttime.
2.) On freeways always drive on the right lane. The left lane is *only there to overtake* another car. After overtaking, immediately change back to the right lane.

5 Swiss Franc equates to about 3.76 in pound sterling which is around about the same you’d pay here in the UK for a Starbucks.

best thing to do on a hot a humid summer day:take a swim in one of the lakes or rivers. you can swimm i all of the lakes even in that river crossing zurich! it is nowhere ti polluted. its always chill and fun. and kind of the national hobby for swiss people. if you would have walked downalong theriver for about 15‘ you would reach the letten where zurich people usually jump into the river!

As a Swiss, CHF 20.- vor a pizza is very cheap for me. There is food even more expensive. And about smalltalk in Switzerland... I'm currently in Australia and everywhere I go people ask you "How are you doing?" At the beginning of my travel that was kind of weird and new for me because in Switzerland you just pay at the counter and that's it! ;D
