United States Penitentiary - Marion, IL "1978-2005" (The ONLY Level 6 USP) - 2 Bonus Prison Shows!

- The United States Penitentiary located near the small, rural town of Marion, Illinois first opened in 1963. The intended purpose was to replace the aging, run-down, and extraordinarily expensive-to-maintain prison located on Alcatraz island. This had been the Federal Prison that was charged with incarcerating the "worst of the worst."
One correctional officer (CO) described the initial USP Marion prisoners as "mostly young inmates." The example he used was "first-time bank robbers." He went on to say that the typical trouble COs had to address centered primarily on relatively minor fist fights, arguments over perceived incidents of "disrespect" between two inmates, or gambling disputes.
That all changed in 1978, when USP Marion was officially classified as a LEVEL 6 facility.
United States Penitentiary Marion was now a high-security SUPERMAX prison. Federal prisoners classified as "the worst of the worst" began streaming into the relatively low-capacity prison, and almost immediately, the violence, brutality, and occasionally even murder began.
** United States Penitentiary Marion is now a medium-security facility. **
I love to fall asleep to Bill Kurtis voice I literally find documentaries with him narrating and fall asleep peacefully
I love when I find these gems!!! Bill Kurtis is my favorite narrator!!!! American Justice and Cold Case Files are also so good!!
Hes a hack...watch lockdown 23 and 1, or blood on the razorwire
Same! He's right up there with Peter Thomas from Forensic Files
I ran into Bill Kurtis at a restaurant when I was in high school. Its surreal hearing him speak in real life like he does in documentaries.
Omg I know!!. I feel like he just has the perfect narrative voice lol.
Interesting to hear a first hand account from other guards & inmates involved with Silverstein and that terrible murder of Clutts, Silverstein was a pretty scary dude!
They don't make documentaries like this anymore . Bill Kurtis is half of what makes it good .
ya these were the best lol.
First tv time was black and white l love the older documentary
There has never been a better Host / Narrator for documentary style television than Mr. Bill Kurtis.
isn't he the father of george clooney? or is it that other guy
He announces for the NPR program WAIT WAIT DON'T TELL ME a quiz show aired weekends.
He and the show are highly ranked. Blessings to all
That's Bill kurtis, not mr. Clooney.

What about the narrator of the forensic files show? He was good too!
Bill kurtis is responsible for getting me hooked on crime shows. American justice and docs.. Nobody better
Him and Robert Stack were my favorite voices on TV back in the day. Paul Harvey was still radio god.
Yup
Agree 100%: He is the best in the business!
A yo me too, I love Bill do you know that American greed is his production
Facts
Nothing beats Bill Kurtis narrating.
I remember Bill on Channel 2 CBS news in Chicago in the 80s. I always liked him. Bill Kurtis has a voice, demeanor and command like no other. He's reassuring yet serious altogether.
Robert Stack
Agreed
@@CocoSnicker12 I like him too, but I think Bill Kurtis is the VERY best.

The quality of this documentary is a lot better than any prison documentary that I've seen in the past ten or more years. Good work !! This is an excellent piece of education.

Thank you my friend!
I grew up just North of Marion in Jefferson County. I had just got out of the Army when the Marion Penitentiary opened. It was built because Alcatraz Penitentiary was being closed. I have seen the Marion Penitentiary many times from the highway that runs through Marion. It is hard to believe that Pete Rose, famous Cincinnati Reds baseball player, served time there. I knew Pete Rose when I lived in Cincinnati from 1975-85 and have several of his autographs that he signed for me. He should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame in my opinion. He has more hit than any baseball player in history with 4256 hits. Pete and Ty Cobb are the only 2 players to ever get over 4000 hits. * Bill Kurtis is one of the best!
Rose was on the minimum security camp thank God.
Agreed, Charlie Hustle should be in the Hall.
And he never bet against his own team
Cool🎉
Bill Kurtis is simply the best at this. Perfect voice, inflection, diction, and enunciation. He's just really, really good, IMO
I agree. He is among the very BEST in the business. Personally, I am with you in that I consider Mr. Kurtis *THE* best. It's simply no contest.
@Brian Salomon I am only a "student" in that I read every book, and watch every show on Prisons both State and Federal. I am just a retired TV meteorologist (and only small and medium-market cities; I never made the big leagues but tried like hell.) Yes..I understand there are some absolute monsters that were in Marion during the Supermax years. The thing that makes me almost uncontrollably CRAZY..is that it's now a *LOWER* security facility (despite apparently maintaining a "USP" designation.. at least the last time I checked), yet contains the lowest form of scum.. *the worst criminal maggots on the Planet: CHILD MOLESTERS!* I am dead serious when I say this: If they are ALL child-molesters, child-rapists and child killers in Marion, then evacuate all staff, the city of Marion, surrounding rural areas.. and unleash every B-52 we have on that place. Scorched-Earth!
I appreciate you watching my video Brian. Have a great night.
@Brian Salomon Thank you Sir.
MR.Curtis was the voice of Chicago news for decades before A,&E channel
It's his upper class Chicago accent
Very soothing
Somehow
I miss him
I worked at a maximum security prison for 10 years. When the SORT team was called in, They marched like SWAT with full combat gear. Once that cell was opened, it was over within 10-20 seconds. There was always a video person recording the takedown. Some units were like monkey houses at the zoo. Yelling, screaming, throwing things, and just being A** holes. Other units are mostly quiet and relaxed. I never saw or heard of a correction officer giving inmates anything illegal. We, the staff had periodic shakedowns. Also, if you do one little thing for an inmate, they have you hooked. They could turn you in at any time.
I've been watching Bill Curtis for over 25yrs and he's the best at what he's does. Continue the good work. I see him as aecond Walter Cronkite, precise and delivers the news as each story develops.
He most certainly is. I believe it is not unreasonable to consider him to be among the best in the business. He also saved many, MANY lives in Topeka, KS on June 8, 1966 when he warned the city that a very large and violent F5 tornado was approaching the city. 16 people tragically died, but a great many more likely would have perished without Bill, on-the-air, enthusiastically urging "for *GOD'S SAKE,* TAKE COVER!!*

Great documentary! I've enjoyed prison documentaries for years, even at a young age. They are so informative and educational. Prison is a subculture of society and it's explained why. A definite deterrent.
But there has to be a reason that America is basically the only country that makes then 'prison doco's that is.. maybe be of the large prison population who knows, do you since im quite sure your American?
@Dave Christian the only country?! There are some about prisons in the UK. Don't remember the production company off top of my head, but I don't think America is the only. Yes I'm American.
As for reason, my guess is to inform watchers and anyone else who is curious. Prisons aren't a secret and to go inside with a live production crew is valuable footage.
@Dave Christian lmfao u ever heard of the TV show on NATIONAL tv called world's most dangerous prisons?? Maybe u can tell me why ppl from other countries are so dumb like urself??
I see it as a deterrent as well. When I was a kid I saw Escape From Alcatraz , with Clint Eastwood. For a time I thought prisoners were cool. That is until I learned about prison “sex” . Needless to say I never went to prison.
Being locked down before, 85% of prison staff is corrupt as sin! They put inmates into fight's for betting they bring cell phones in, drug's, tobacco, fly kites to outside gang members.. Prison is a multi million dollar business. I knew a guy who had a $2,000 an hour lawyer and would go back too prison for 2-4 year's run his game inside get out for 2-6 year's live like a Rockstar women, houses, cars, motorcycles and boat's. He was a general in a prison gang so his game was always tight in the houses. One time he got locked down and the guy he passed the keys too was a lifer and didn't feel like giving up the keys or hustle and aired homie out. But yeah everyone from your lawyer, prosecutors, judge's, cops, and the whole prison make money off everyone that fall's into the legal system. And i can assure you there are innocent people locked down and become very violent too survive.
Not as corrupt and dirty as you. You were the one locked up
@@thetruthhurts131 i got locked up because someone stole money from my dad and the police didn't do a damn thing. So i went to get the money back and dude stabbed me on the street in front of his house and i beat him up a little bit, we crossed into his driveway and the cops locked me up cause i just so happened to be in a 1% motorcycle club at the time and they didn't like me cause i don't do drug's i don't sell drug's i don't run around like an idiot breaking the law every day. I own my security company make $98,000 a year before taxes but because i was in an outlaw motorcycle club at that time the cops didn't like me. So maybe think twice before you open your lame mouth. Not everyone who gets locked up is a scumbag, our justice system is the real criminal, just wait till you have to fight for your own protection and get 30 days for mutual combat. 😱😱
@@chainshishd9127 You were in a criminal gang anyways. Plus you took the law into your own hand.
@@thetruthhurts131 you are too stupid to understand that people sometimes have defend themselves. Like i said i was in the city street telling dude to give me the money, he then came into the street and stabbed me and tried to pull the knife out to stab me again, i kept that from happening and headbutted him he stumbled back i kicked his knee punched him once and kneeled on his back and called 911. I didn't perform criminal activity while in the outlaw motorcycle club in fact 70% of us didn't, you have a lot to learn about life, one day will come when you have to decide to let someone hurt or kill you or fight. And these day's it's called mutual combat. So both parties go to jail. Learn quick and fast that the government are the real scumbag outlaw's along with child molesters and the justice system.
@@thetruthhurts131 i apologize for calling you stupid. Naive is the proper word and unwise too the true nature of the world

"If there is one thing I know. If there's Hell below, we're all gonna go!"
Hey dude, this was a great find, thanks for posting. When I was in the federal system from 08-11, dudes who had done time at Marion when it was still administrative maximum (no more "level" numbers) had something we called "Marion Psychosis." Some had been out of that awful place since the late 90s (a/k/a The GREAT 90s!) but still hadn't bounced back, and probably never would. That control unit regime breaks even hard men, and makes them more maladjusted, paranoid and violent than they already were. Most were lifers, but some had release dates. I wouldn't want someone with Marion Psychosis living next door to me.

My Aikido instructor Tim Montgomery was the Tactical trainer at Marion and I worked at Tam's supermax on the sort team
Hi David Spence, I started at Williamson county jail as an officer. Decided to get my RN degree. Found out I could make better money working at Menard CC. But met my husband Loyd who was a Sgt then, so that was good. He knew Tim too. We're both retired now. While working at county the FBI and Marshal's would house the Marion level 6's for Federal Court in Benton. We weren't allowed to open the iso cell doors without the Karzai's or FBI there even if the jail was on fire. Just the chuck hole for meal trays. One guy they housed at county was a guy who burned people alive. He was pleasant😑. It's a small world. Glad I'm retired, don't miss it at all
Odd they train in a martial art that is useless in real world violence. There's a reason you never see an Aikido practitioner in UFC or any promotion for that matter. It's pretend.

It's a completely flawed system. As Americans were witnessing examples of it everyday.
Everybody loves Bill Kurtis. Amazing that he sat in on the Manson Trial when he was basically just a kid fresh out of school.
It's strange how a person can adapt to a horrible existence like prison. But can not adapt to living in a free society.
free?
Sir it’s no where near free out here..
Easily answered. Safety, meals, friends, environment of familiarity. This is what I’m guessing💯
Because they have no choice
You get used to it after a while hell your meals delivered free health care clean clothes what else could you want it’s hard being responsible out here especially if your alone.
We have lived in Marion all our lives, and honestly hear very little about this prison at all until something happens there. I think some people who live here do not even know it is there. Very informative!
Thats the way they like it. Keep the prison industrial complex quiet 🤫
Ya you never heard anything about the place. My bm mom worked there
I'm from Marion and said almost exactly the same thing. The biggest news I remember is when Pete Rose was transferred there while the medium security prison he was going to was finished being constructed.
Well, aside from the two guards being killed. I was in high school when that happened.
I've driven through Illinois specifically on I 57 a couple of times in my life, and have seen big muddy while driving but had no clue this one existed.

9:04 first time I EVER heard an inmate admit his crime and actually take full accountability. For what it's worth I can respect that.
In 1988 I was fresh out of college, and applied for a clerical position at Leavenworth. I tested well, interviewed, and was offered the job, but at a pay grade I couldn't live on, even extremely frugally. I look back now and I'm so glad the Federal Bureau of Prisons were so chintzy with their pay,...but I feel really bad for the poor folks who feel like they have to work there. They don't make enough money for what they deal with and what they risk.
I guess they wont pay people enough to bring the inmates some doughnuts and coffee
@@markzucker3949 The job description didn't mention doughnuts or coffee.
Why do you think every single inmate has a cell phone now why do you think there is more drugs in prison now than ever before it's all the CO'S their low-wages push them to make money elsewhere in the prison
@@markzucker3949 haaa-Haha! nice reference!
@@kedeglow2743 You're being dishonest. You as a mere secretary aren't going to get paid the same as an officer, and the only contact you'll have with inmates, if any, will be with trustees. You won't be working a segregation wing. Starting pay for a CO in the BOP is almost $55K a year. If you cant live on that, you're a turd, and even clerical positions have better starting pay than in the private sector.
You're a liar.
Pretty ironic how the first guy is going to live life on HIS terms. Well, except for the being in a SuperMax prison, I suppose.
Dr Scott Duncan you truly are a good & caring man!
You are not alone. I am a recovering heroin addict, ex-dancer and escort, that lived life in the fastlane. The 90's were wild, fun, crazy. I WAS free.
Concerts, modeling for lingerie shows. I did drugs (acid, shrooms, ecstasy, drinking, cocaine, pills), but it was fun. However, years later, my life changed.
Heroin, Prisons, Jails, Addiction, Rehabs, Hospitals. I got tired of the cycle. Bondage and a slave to the drugs; mainly heroin.
I also sometimes miss that life, but then I think of the times of being dopesick and how I couldn't feel "normal" until I had that heroin in my body. I think about sleeping on concrete and going through withdrawals. I think about being away from my family and all the Holidays I missed. I've missed so many that their not as important as they used to be. I've changed ALOT due to being in Jails, Prisons, and the street life. Well, I wanna say more but I feel like I'm writing a book. Lol.
God bless you and stay strong.

A good friend of mine worked in a state prison here in GA. One day in the mess hall two inmates jumped him, kicking, punching, hitting with trays and such. The only reason he lived was a kitchen inmate grabbed him and drug him thru a door then locked it behind them. He said he had no clue they were going to jump him it just happened all of a sudden. He quit that job very very soon after that incident and never looked back.
Think I would become a truck driver safer.

One inmate jumps you, he could just be evil or crazy. 2 inmates jumping a guard usually means that guard did something he shouldn’t have.

Corporal punishment is immoral and wrong. It'd be like God punishing everyone for the sins of another individual, which is messed up.
@@derekbaker777 God did that on several occasions in the bible. Corporal punishment is really one of his trademarks tbh
@@flixri726: Not really. God brought the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt from one man's obedience: Moses. The Lord also told Abraham that if he could find 50 righteous men he'd spare Sodom & Gomorrah, and even agreed upon 10 men in the end, but none were found. @@MrQuijibo: Actions have consequences, and Pharaoh should of listened. I don't think you have a proper understanding of God. Do you really think that God is just all love? If you do, you are sorely mistaken. Look at what God did when he told Noah to build an Ark, and he flooded the entire world and many died... Look at what God did to Sodom & Gomorrah... The Bible says that it's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of an angry God. God isn't some robot with only one feeling. God loves us, but he hates sin and rightfully so. If you think judgement day is gonna be all cheeries and peaches, you are also mistaken. Humans are complex beings with all sorts of emotions, and God is the same way because we were created in his image. You have much to learn about God, the Bible and humanity as a whole. Love your video! Hello from Tyler Texas!
My grandparents lived down the same road as the prison for years its interesting seeing the inside
Great upload man. I don't watch TV any longer, been 12 years. This old boy appreciates interesting uploads to watch on my tablet. Thanks ✌
Glad you enjoyed it!
Likewise, been 10 years & i will have to split this in 2\3 sets. ✌🏼

Watch Oz that’ll give you the best insight of prison uncut
@@adriengrahm6246 Best show ever made. Should be shown in every high school in America. So many stars made it from this show. 👏👏👏👍👍👍
The wedding when the lady said, " most exciting day of my life." In regards to marrying a convict she met writing prisoners. That's hard to hear considering she showed up with her children. 😐😐😐
I feel the same about bill Curtis. If the show uses bill Curtis as the narrator you can bet I’ll be watching that show.
50 years for armed robbery? And at the age of 13?! His case needs to be reevaluated
Agreed!! So does prob 50% of all older cases.. Back then the law did what they wanted, even more than they do now!!
What so he can reoffend again armed Robert ain't something u get a slap on the wrist for lmao.
@@davedesousa9546 If 50 years is a slap on the wrist then thats gonna leave a mark.
@@davedesousa9546 at 13? 50 years? He didn't murder anyone.. USA locks up more ppl then any other country, also we spend the most per prisoner, it's a broken system.
Yea probably a little more to that story
Give us a thumbs up for Bill Kurtis!!!!
True story. My grade school friend is serving life without in Marion for gunning down twin girls who were in the way of a rival gang member. His statement at trial: "They were in the way."
Man that's so heartless💔😡😡😡😡
and that is your friend? was a friend? Nice dude.
@@spankedbywife1018 I talked to him for the last time when he was in prison. He stated that he would have done it again to take out that rival gang member. I was very upset and angry. I called him a murderer before I left. That was 37 years ago.

Bill Curtis you’re number ☝️and thanks for the uploads I really enjoy these videos 👍👍
Ever notice when law enforcement or corrections officers are killed they’re always great guys, family men, nice fellas? It’d be honestly refreshing if every now and then someone said ‘yeah, sorry it happened but that guy was an asshole’.
LOL
Point taken. It is said about many, many people who pass. Also, let me ask you this, would it not be refreshing for an inmate, one inmate to admit, "Yes. I am a sick, twisted motherfucker who is guilty!" Versus, " I did not do it (when they did) and I, "was abused as child, I was not responsible; I was under the influence; I have 9 other personalities(we play against ea. other in basketball); the Devil possessed me; I am a diabetic. . . . . "
Bill Curtis has an amazing voice love listening to him on these prison videos
Exactly. Sadly their families probably don’t even know or ever see just how much of an evil person they are when their in their uniform treating inmates like absolute shit. 99.9% of the time, a correction officer will only be attacked because he’s been treating inmates like dirt. If they killed him it’s pretty much a guarantee he was shitty person who abused his power. COs who do their job but treat inmates like human beings are almost always praised by prisoners when they retire. it’s not “doing your job” that gets you hurt. It’s being a POS that gets you hurt.
Gentlemen, to both of your points: it’s a broader American problem. Having lived in the States and being from the Netherlands, I can objectively say that American culture has a serious issue with stating facts and dealing with them. Straightforward authenticity is less appreciated than almost any other country I lived in, with China being the notable exception, they take the price for beating around the bush.
To be sure, there’s real upside to unrealistic optimism (go big or go home for example), but the drawbacks are much worse in my opinion (a culture disjointed from reality in a meaningful way).
Their victims are serving their own sentence also.
Gotta couple rolled, chillin watching this. The jail shitstym is a mess.. nice one for the upload, good watch.👊🏾💯
There was a C.O. who worked in Marion for decades then made a CZcams channel about it. But due to pressure from his higher-ups and co-workers he took his channel down and wiped the whole thing. He had amazing stories but he told everything truthfully so the B.O.P. didn’t like that.
He is back on! He is 100% legit and the stories are told with his unique tone and tempo. Very worthwhile watching!
@@ChristopherSaindon yes, I’ve seen his channel is back. His stories don’t seem to be like they were though. Maybe he was told to not speak on certain things. I’m glad he’s back.
I was in the Army Infantry and I can tell you you'd be surprised at the similarities. A lot of those guys I now realize would be in prisons if it wasn't for the Army. They had that same kinda of dog on a piece of meat mentality. The working out like crazy, gang style driven commitment, etc. Some will disagree and I understand that, but I really believe it to be true.
I’m army aviation, but I see exactly what your talking about. especially have to deal with you grunts during air assaults and shit lol @seanp7195
Im a Marine grunt. People have no clue. Or how much hard crime goes down in the military and is never on the news.

The Warden's decision to not lock the prison down after Clutts' death was catastrophic.
Yes Sir. It was.
Highly recommend a book called “The Hot House” by Pete Early 💯 I read it, ironically in prison, and it went into detail about a ton of stuff that happened at Leavenworth. Great book.
I read it MANY times! It is a magnificent book!! Have a great day and thanks for watching. :)

I've read it 3 times. Wish someone would write another.
Yes, great book 😮🎉
Wow, Amazing upload.. Thanx, keep it upp my guy..
Thank you! Going through all my DVDs for more.
@@ChristopherSaindon Thats cool man. Did you work in the documentary’s? I was looking for some more in depth about Marion, didn’t find it, this gives such an insight. One of the guards I used to follow, his story’s didn’t seem to match upp. (Upp front excuses if my English is not that great, I’m from Amsterdam “the Netherlands”.
@@Juan4ever-o1n No my Brother -- I wish! I am (was) a small-time TV weather anchor and over the years these prison documentaries really fascinated me. I recorded every one I could. Your English is OK! No worries. If I can find anything at all on Marion I'll post it. Also, The book "The Hot House" by Pete Earley and "Letters from Marion" by Joel Blaeser..both are HIGHLY recommended. The Hot House covers Leavenworth in-depth, but also devotes an entire chapter to the October 22, 1983 murders. The other book does take you inside Marion, but also covers the journey that led him to Marion including FCI Sandstone, MN..several Colorado Federal Facilities, Talladega, AL then Marion. It's a MUST-READ for you Sir. Have a great day my friend.
@@ChristopherSaindon Small or not, i appreciate your work my guy. I’m watching this docu again now. This is some heavy stuff. As for the books, I found them and ordered them, thanx for this advice. I still can not imagine that there are some humans who the world never heard of but they were/are in Marion. Those officers where some true gangsters themselves man. Wauw
@@Juan4ever-o1n Glad to hear you're enjoying the documentary Juan! You will LOVE those books!!
Dog the bounty hunter add was a cold twist of logic
“[in the U.S.] we have to learn to distinguish between people that we are mad at and people we are afraid of. Only the latter, people we are afraid of because they are violets and they are a going to hurt others or themselves, belong in prison.”
-Paraphrasing from an enlightened warden in another prison documentary
Bill curtis has an amazing voice he is a good commentator

The guy they interviewed at the beginning, John Gretchner, was a solid convict back in the day. But he eventually became an informant and now exists somewhere in protective custody.
Man I miss Bill Curtis doing these shows. Cant imagine Life watching T.V without him. Salute to Bill
I feel so bad for the guy who got 50 years at 13 years old for robbery. That’s insane. If he wasn’t as strong as he was he would be victimized for crying and showing weakness the way he did. I hope they let him out someday .
Our justice system is barbaric. That guy didn’t deserve any where near the amount of time they gave him. Actually sad.
Same here 🤧
For those poorly/wrongly given sentences ...yeah...pitiful...for the rest, no empathy whatsoever. Other than for the horror they suffered in youth or life that made them this way...
