After watching Martijn's videos for a while, I came to realize that there are a few vloggers that ruin it for most other video producers. Completely unintentional of course, but their way of using cameras and sounds sets a standard that makes it almost impossible to really appreciate other similar videos anymore. Itchy Boots is a very good example; Martijn's narrative style is another. Because in his videos, the speech maintains a constant sound level, the music supports (sparingly) instead of disturbing. The video is logically structured, he makes reasonably long clips, does not linger too long with the drone images. No unmotivated pan or tilt, nor zooming in and out. The camera is stable and he does not cheat when he has to go a long way back to pick it up again after a shot. Plus the picture quality is always excellent! In short, a school example of how to best tell a story with camera and sound!
Surely Martijn is not doing all the filming and vid work himself? If so he is on another level of accomplishment beyond what I already credit him with.
I don't know how you managed to write it so eloquently! but that's exactly what was going through my head I was trying to find what the key things are that make his videos the quality that they are and you found them all.
I'm italian, and I'd like to show all italians your videos, so that they can learn how to live in difficult times putting all your effort , time, creativity, money, calmness eccc..... to plan a more sustainable and independent lifestyle, other than complaining and worrying about what's happening around, doing nothing or just wanting their old life back and staying in that shitty comfort-zone. Congratulation Martijn for your hard work ! You are an example to follow !

Both story telling and visual setups are beautifully put together and crafted which in my opinion was not present in his past videos on this level. This is a very commendable thing since he keeps perfecting his craft even further.
Mate I don't know how you do it but the cinematography of all your videos is amazing. But then again it might be easy when everything around you looks amazing. Whichever the case everything is beautifully shot. Great videos!
Idea: That lead pipe looks large enough to fit a plastic hose inside it. Maybe you could push it through the whole distance; then you don't have to dig up the old pipe and/or cover the new one. :-)
To put a plastic pipe inside the lead pipe would reduce the flow of water considerably. Get rid of the lead pipe. Not good for your health. Don't try using it for anything else.

The world is pretty rough right now as we all know…and actually i think i can still find my place of comfort without constant media and loss. My dad taught me you can do anything without saying it. He pulled an engine from our car in the 60’s, built a green house with hydraulics in the 70’s, we hiked to the top of San Jacinto and saw our shadow at sunrise across the massive valley on the top of the crossing mountain top. Built a now close to 40 year old business out of nothing. .. a maverick? He passed to early, at 69, on the 4th of July which is endearing because he loved America’s history and built our family business around it. Follow your heart
You can put a lot of dead twigs and old leaves in the bottom of a raised bed- it saves on the volume of soil required and rots down over the years to form soil and feed the plants.

Things are coming along nicely. I live in South Carolina in the US. Our planting season is in about two weeks in my area. I am trying a three sisters garden which was used by the Indigenous people of North America. I’ll plant corn and after two weeks plant a climbing bean which will use the corn and the beans will put nitrogen back in the soil for the corn. The third of the sisters will be butternut squash which will provide ground cover keeping weeds down and the leaves have small spines on them which will help keep animals out. Really enjoy your channel.

We are starting to revisit their fire management techniques to reduce wildfires here in Australia. We can learn a lot from them about caring for our land and animals.
You could keep the tongue and grove lumber uncover when sunny. Cover it when rain , fog ,etc. From experience , the tarp traps the moisture under. Condensation. I like your vlogs , but more , I like your project. Its almost therapeutic. Can't wait to see the roof slates coming down.

I'd go big with the skylights ... maybe 2 or even 3. Considering the walls I wouldn't be too concerned about a breathable membrane for the roof, just waterproof would do, I'm not an expert but I just can't see your home noticing a breathable roof membrane. Either way respect your choices and the design seems well thought through and I guess you don't want to stray too far from the traditional design or alarm the planning authorities too much ... but even so I go for as much light in the roof as possible maybe on downside part of the roof from the road, I'd be staring out at the mountains for hours sipping coffee, it's wonderful terrain.

That water pipe looked fairly large, maybe 1” i.d. An option to not have to dig a new pipe in could be to push a 3/4” pipe up the inside of the old pipe. It will still flow more than enough water, will provide protection for the new pipe and will eliminate the Lead hazard.

I hiked up that same valley someday in autumn 2018. There were a few pickup trucks parked at that mountain village. Lights were on and dogs barking. Thanks for sharing! I love the subdued editing and story telling.
To make good compost make two piles, fill the first with grass, wood chips, leaves, ash from the fire and add some worms making sure they are covered, after 6 months turn the first pile in to the second opening to airate the mix, start adding more waste to the first location and leave over winter covering with a tarpaulin to keep the heat in. once you have gone on for a year you will get nitrogen rich compost and a supply each 6 months. any organic mater from your cooking also throw into the mix.
6 month is too long for my taste If you have a full chamber and you turn the pile once every 4-6 weeks it will compost much faster so you have hot phases more often and also a much better oxygen supply which very is important with ash should be careful because of the high PH level! too much ash does more harm than good! in the garden, for example, a teaspoon per plant is quite sufficient Ash is good if you compost a lot of sour material to raise the PH but of course only use ash from untreated wood

It's the same here in Liguria. People come to the abandoned villages in summer and life comes to life. Usually when it's too hot on the coast. Here in the valley we have dozens of these villages.

It's amazing what you have do to your property. This program reminded me of the Loveland Castle, Loveland, Ohio USA. It was built on a steep hill side along the Little Miami River by a World War I Veteran. It was built from stones from the river and concrete bricks he made using milk cartons for the forms. He built stone terraces for his garden. He also built in little alcoves where he put kerosene lanterns in the winter months to keep his plants from freezing. This landscape and its people are so beautiful. I walked a part of the GTA years ago with two friends. Through ghost towns full of cats, recaptured by the wilderness. It was magic. Somewhere in this area (we could see the Mont Blanc in the distance on the french side) we met an old couple, both in their 70s at least. Strong and healthy people. They waved from afar once they saw us and invited us to have some coffee. They only spoke piemontèis, at least we barely understand a word. But they were so nice. They lived there in a small cabin most of the year with some cows in the stable right next to them. No comfort, pure and spare. Probably the most happy people i ever met. We bought some selfmade cheese and continued our trip. I will never forget this day. I hope they are still there on their mountain, happy and healthy :)

Here, in our mountains in Bulgaria, we have unfortunatelly, a lot of abandoned ghost villages and cottages too, so it's not problem only in Italia, I'm afraid. It's rather a civilizational problem, I think. A problem of the way of life we perceived like modern community... Anyway, I'd like share with you some things about gardening, because I saw you make first steps in this direction too. You have probably read materials on the subject and know about them, but I think it's not superfluous to mention them, just in case. Аs for the approach of gardening, you probably know that the no dig method is the most natural and most recomended method from more and more gardeners. I also recomend it to you from personal experiense. I think it will be the best choise for your mountain garden. The other tning I'd like to share as experiense and knowledge, is for beds orientation. As you probably know, the gardeners recomend for summer grow the beds to have north-south orientation, so to get the most of the high summer sun. For winter grow (I don't know if at your altitude it will be possible to have any winter grows, but nothing prevents you from trying and then sharing with us the results :) ), so for winter grow the gardeners recomend to have east-west orientation of your beds, so to take the maximum sunlight from the low winter sun. So, when you start the greenhouse project, maybe you have to consider this, even more if you plan to use it in the winter. Put the stairs down under the skylight and in front of the windows. That way even more light. And separation between kitchen and living room.
I'd go big with the skylights ... maybe 2 or even 3. Considering the walls I wouldn't be too concerned about a breathable membrane for the roof, just waterproof would do, I'm not an expert but I just can't see your home noticing a breathable roof membrane. Either way respect your choices and the design seems well thought through and I guess you don't want to stray too far from the traditional design or alarm the planning authorities too much ... but even so I go for as much light in the roof as possible maybe on downside part of the roof from the road, I'd be staring out at the mountains for hours sipping coffee, it's wonderful terrain.

Maybe even have part of floor with glass , so that light goes to the ground floor?

That water pipe looked fairly large, maybe 1” i.d. An option to not have to dig a new pipe in could be to push a 3/4” pipe up the inside of the old pipe. It will still flow more than enough water, will provide protection for the new pipe and will eliminate the Lead hazard.
Pex is much better than lead, and it can take a fair bit of freezing. It's also great to work with.

I hiked up that same valley someday in autumn 2018. There were a few pickup trucks parked at that mountain village. Lights were on and dogs barking.

To make good compost make two piles, fill the first with grass, wood chips, leaves, ash from the fire and add some worms making sure they are covered, after 6 months turn the first pile in to the second opening to airate the mix, start adding more waste to the first location and leave over winter covering with a tarpaulin to keep the heat in. once you have gone on for a year you will get nitrogen rich compost and a supply each 6 months. any organic mater from your cooking also throw into the mix.
Most worms enjoy coffee grounds too. Perhaps they too like the java jive!

6 month is too long for my taste
If you have a full chamber and you turn the pile once every 4-6 weeks it will compost much faster
so you have hot phases more often and also a much better oxygen supply which very is important
with ash should be careful because of the high PH level! too much ash does more harm than good!
in the garden, for example, a teaspoon per plant is quite sufficient
Ash is good if you compost a lot of sour material to raise the PH but of course only use ash from untreated wood

It's the same here in Liguria. People come to the abandoned villages in summer and life comes to life. Usually when it's too hot on the coast. Here in the valley we have dozens of these villages.

This program reminded me of the Loveland Castle, Loveland, Ohio USA. It was built on a steep hill side along the Little Miami River by a World War I Veteran. It was built from stones from the river and concrete bricks he made using milk cartons for the forms.
He built stone terraces for his garden. He also built in little alcoves where he put kerosene lanterns in the winter months to keep his plants from freezing.
With all the stones you have on your property and your hillside, this might be a permanent way to build future garden beds for you and generations to come.

This landscape and its people are so beautiful. I walked a part of the GTA years ago with two friends. Through ghost towns full of cats, recaptured by the wilderness. It was magic. Somewhere in this area (we could see the Mont Blanc in the distance on the french side) we met an old couple, both in their 70s at least. Strong and healthy people. They waved from afar once they saw us and invited us to have some coffee. They only spoke piemontèis, at least we barely understand a word. But they were so nice. They lived there in a small cabin most of the year with some cows in the stable right next to them. No comfort, pure and spare. Probably the most happy people i ever met. We bought some selfmade cheese and continued our trip. I will never forget this day. I hope they are still there on their mountain, happy and healthy :)

Hi, Martijn. Thanks for this another interesting and inspiring video. It's a real pleasure to follow the development of your projects and the breathtaking landscapes from your hiking trips. Here, in our mountains in Bulgaria, we have unfortunatelly, a lot of abandoned ghost villages and cottages too, so it's not problem only in Italia, I'm afraid. It's rather a civilizational problem, I think. A problem of the way of life we perceived like modern community... Anyway, I'd like share with you some things about gardening, because I saw you make first steps in this direction too. You have probably read materials on the subject and know about them, but I think it's not superfluous to mention them, just in case. Аs for the approach of gardening, you probably know that the no dig method is the most natural and most recomended method from more and more gardeners. I also recomend it to you from personal experiense. I think it will be the best choise for your mountain garden. The other tning I'd like to share as experiense and knowledge, is for beds orientation. As you probably know, the gardeners recomend for summer grow the beds to have north-south orientation, so to get the most of the high summer sun. For winter grow (I don't know if at your altitude it will be possible to have any winter grows, but nothing prevents you from trying and then sharing with us the results :) ), so for winter grow the gardeners recomend to have east-west orientation of your beds, so to take the maximum sunlight from the low winter sun. So, when you start the greenhouse project, maybe you have to consider this, even more if you plan to use it in the winter.
