  • The Halsema Highway is one of the most dangerous roads in the world. Big stones tumble from the peaks onto the road. And along with the cloud forest comes mist that complicates Halsema Highways already dangerous conditions. No picnic for driver Dennis.
vpro Metropolis was a video project by Dutch broadcast organisation vpro, that ran from 2008 to 2015. Metropolis is made by a global collective of young filmmakers and TV producers, reporting on remarkable stories from their own country/city. We made a trip around the globe on one single issue: from local beauty ideals to Elvis impersonators, to what's it like being gay, or an outcast or a dog in different cultures.

Update: sagada has 2 lanes now and it is cemented. It even has a alternate road which is also 2 lanes. The only problem are a little sinking portions or the occasional lands slides during rainy season.

Seems like a dated footage. I frequent the place as a University researcher way back 2010 - 2012. I've ridden those GL buses and the Rising Sun buses and I can attest that Halsema doesn't look like this, all roads were already paved.

The road can be challenging and deadly, its also mysterious you can't predict what's waiting on the next corner, the views are breathtaking and pushes you to keep going. I love Halsema - Bontoc Highway.

The Halsema highway alone is good and safe two lane, cemented and it's a national road kaya maayus, yung mga ibang shots dto is mga 1990's pa yata, safe for those disciplined drivers, poor visibility Nga lang for some area pag foggy but not all

I live in this area and drive these roads a lot. This is largely BS. Most of the footage wasn't even shot on the Halsema Highway, but on the branch road going to Sagada. The Halsema itself is almost entirely 2-lane cement now. A lot of the translations are wrong as well. He didn't say a bus full of wedding guests crashed, he said an ELF (private truck) crashed. They also missed the bit where he says if you run over a dog at least you can pick it up and eat it. All in all I rate the Halsema as less dangerous than many lowland Philippine roads: there are natural hazards but the real hazards in driving are the other vehicles, and the drivers on the Halsema are generally more capable and considerate than what you find elsewhere in the country.

Steven Rogers Hi, glad to hear that you live there. I am planning a motorcycle trip from Makati to Sagada this May 2015 with my brother uncle and dad, you say Halsema is paved which is good, but is the fork going to Sagada also paved at this point? We are pretty experienced riders but if the road to Sagada isn't paved, it's a no go since our bikes are superbikes not multipurpose bikes. I would greatly appreciate your feedback.

Marco afzelius There are a few unpaved sections on the road up to Sagada, with work ongoing. They are short but in a few places they can be rutted and muddy, especially if it's been raining. People do come up on big bikes, though.

The real hazards are the half assed drivers who ply these roads. We know very well you can bribe your way into obtaining your drivers license in that part of the world. Some roads they showed are like the back roads.. I've worked in the area in the late 70s but most of the roads are decent and passable. And recently visited the country and pleasantly surprised about the condition of the roads, two lane and paved, cement or asphalt.

I experience the trip in zigzag road in Atimonan Quezon province, road to Baler Aurora, Dalton pass in Santa Fe, Kennon road to Baguio, Marcos highway, Naguillian road, road from Pagudpod Ilokos Norte to Cagayan valley, so really dangerous 👊🏻but the Hanselma highway road to Sagada THIS is my opinion 👍🏻That is the most DANGEROUS ROAD IN THE PHILIPPINES
