    .
Found this VERY late, and it's FASCINATING !!
The one thing I noticed though, is that (mostly) everyone is praising only Andrew Sandoval here, which, of course he deserves, but kudos to you Mr. Russo, for not doing that thing that WAY too many interviewers do, which is to try and make everything they do (Howard Stern being one of the WORST in this regard), about THEM !! In other words, inserting themselves, their thoughts, and their comments WAY TOO MUCH, and making it difficult, if not impossible, for the interviewee to say everything they want to say! A little bit goes a LONG way when it comes to being the host and interviewer, in MY opinion!
Thank you sir for ALL of these posts, but thank you even MORE for asking the questions, and then GETTING OUT OF THE WAY to let your subject answer what you've asked, rather than telling us all what YOU think about the question, or questions, that you've just asked !!
You do a VERY good job of 'walking the tightrope' of asking the questions, and directing the flow of the talk wherever it goes, but NOT inserting too many of your thoughts and feelings on these things, and instead letting "the expert" (Andrew Sandoval, in this case) pass along his knowledge to the rest of us......
Sadly though, I have just now become guilty of inserting WAY too much of MY feelings into this "discussion"........but basically just wanted to say to you, THANK YOU !!
    .

Big thanks Andrew for your work on behalf of The Monkees and the fans. You've raised the bar by many notches on the group's legacy. I've got a good cross section of your Monkees work here in my studio, and was thrilled to be at The Egyptian with you, Mike, and Micky for the HEAD 50th anniversary screening. Fascinating story of Bert Schneider's background work way after 1968. I admire his legacy even more than I did prior to hearing that.

I completely agree with this whole approach, meaning to not compromise and cut material just to fit into pre-conceived formula for selling tons of books to the broadest audience possible. In the 1970's I self- published a few issues of a magazine devoted to SF and other "fantastic" film production, which covered subjects I was told no one was all that interested in (and which i was told to do this and that with the lay-outs because that was what people expected to see, generally). I wanted to do it my way, with my own take on the look of the magazine, and going into the kind of detail that I always found was never covered anywhere else...and people really went for it. It sold very well and I got tons of positive mail and support (back in the day before the internet, Amazon etc. I NEVER regretted doing it that way, and I think Andrew is absolutely on the right track! These kinds of special projects find their audience, and that audience is usually FAR more appreciative of this kind of thing, far more so than a general audience that never seems to either fully "get" or fall in love with anything near the level as something like this (convoluted sentence, but I think you get the idea!...hope.)

I am so glad that I came across your chanel. I have seen the monkees live on several occasions over the years and they have always put on an amazing performance.Thier songwriting, singing and musicianship was astounding. My Son and I saw them on The Monkees Farewell Tour, The Mike And Micky Show, shortly before Mike passed away. I was so grateful to have seen them one last time. My Son and I had the chance to meet and spend some time with them some years ago. I have to say that they were the nicest, kindest people imaginable. Micky even took my Son under his wing and asked my Son if he would like to hang out with him for a while. Micky then spent the better part of an hour with my Son, introducing him to the other musicians and members of the production crew. It is a great memory that my Son and I share to this day. I wanted to relate that story, but the main purpose of my comment was to express my thoughts about what we might be able to do as fans to finally get them into The Roll And Roll Hall Of Fame, where they truly belong. I know one thing, I will never visit The Hall Of Fame, so long as The Monkees aren't inducted into it. It is a travesty that the aren't there already. What can we do to make that happen?

@@TheMonkeesPadPODCAST I remember feeling overwhelmed in a good way. I'd learned from the records and season two of the TV show that I was open to take a ride on any vehicle associated with the group, so I found the freewheeling construction of the film to be enjoyable. I was 14 -- I thought it was really cool that Micky got to swim with mermaids 🙂. Loved ALL the music. Scenes that I thought (and still think) were most profound -- the factory tour (not the fight scene or black and white parts -- just the parts where the guys are being led around the factory and observing what REALLY goes on), Abraham Sofaer's monologue in the steam room about the nature of reality (and Peter's paraphrasing later in the black box while he's holding a match), and the transition from As We Go Along (what a GREAT song -- Toni Stern deserves huge kudos for those lyrics) to the quick cuts of advertisements. To this day I appreciate how Daddy's Song was choreographed and filmed -- capturing David and Toni Basil in dance. Earlier that year I'd seen 2001 A Space Odyssey on the big screen. My reaction to HEAD was similar (enjoy the ride), with the big addition that I was a big Monkees fan before the film. I'd also been reading Ann Moses's coverage of the making of the film all during '68 in Monkee Spectacular magazine. That was interesting but didn't prepare me for the spectacle and commentary on civilization that is HEAD. p.s. Jack Nicholson's work on the soundtrack album is also fantastic. Also - Gene Ashman's costumes -- cooler than any in the TV show.

I'm 63 years old and am a GIANT Beatles fan. I cried all day on April 10th, 1970, when my dad showed me an article in the paper. "Paul quits the Beatles." I have lived in the sixties all my life. The Monkees were an important part of the sixties. I find that I enjoy Mike's songs the best. A little Texas drawl on the vocals. Not quite country. Great stuff. I grew up loving harmony. I always considered myself so lucky to be from the Cleveland area. Detroit had CKLW on AM radio. It BLASTED Motown across Lake Erie along with the Top Forty. Peppered with the Fabs. HEAD is beautifully made. No way could they have done anything with a traditional story. At least when i saw it at the time I thought that this was EXACTLY the film they needed to make. i'd even thought ahead of time that they should do something really radical to sever themselves from their pre-sold image, like commit murder or suicide or something---YES, I did think of that before I had a clue as to what the movie was going to be. I was not a standard Monkees fan. I was a bit older than most fans of the show (really only knew what the show was because my younger sister was a big fan of it). I was only mildly interested in the show itself, or their most popular music. I sensed that they were far more progressive and inventive than they were conceived and perceived to be (songs like WRITING WRONGS, SHORTY BLACKWELL and even RANDY SCOUSE GIT, to me, pointed toward a real turning over of their bubble-y images into something more interesting). I was fascinated with the very concept of a make-believe erstwhile "manufactured" corporate entertainment package bursting out and growing into a whole new thing, totally against type or typecasting. Sort of a 60's mindset. Anyway, the film----having grown up in that era so fused into what was happening then with psychedelics and experimentation of all sorts--wasn't at all that weird to me. I'd seen hundreds of experimental aka "underground" films by 1968, and, if anything, HEAD and 2001 seemed, somewhat restrained to me....

My next-door neighbor's mom was from England so they jumped on the Beatles early. Their father built fake Beatle guitars. (I ended up with Paul's.) I remember how we spent so much time BEING the Beatles. During the summer of 1966 "Last Train To Clarksville" shot up the charts. We all went nuts for the Monkees. Then came the day that we were suppose to get together to mime to the Fabs. All my buddies decided that not only were we switching to pretending that we were the Monkees. The Monkees were now the number one band. You might as well have told this eight year old kid that Walter Cronkite was a commie! So I bought all my friends Beatle cards and memorabilia for a few cents. I think Paul's bass cost me a quarter. The Monkees cannon of music is outstanding as far as the songs themselves. What a lineup of great writers. It got better after they dumped Don Kirshner. For my money the Headquarters and Pieces LP's are their best. The musicians were amazing. Listen to the bass driving a song like "Words". Great stuff

I must throw in a comment about what I HEARD Davy say. He said during an Interview that he never wanted to tour with the Monkees ever again because they thought that they were real rock stars. I had read that he hated the fact the Mike had control of the Monkees TV special in 1996. I had also read that Peter had alot more songs that he wanted to be put on their album Pool It & Davy said NO. I also met Davy & it was NOT a good experience but that's all I will say about that.

No one is perfect, everyone has good days & bad days...it's good to know all sides, though, so I appreciate reading your comment (even if it is not positive)....but I believe Davy was a gifted and talented performer & cared about his audience---he gave us a lot of entertainment & I'm most grateful for that.

I'm so glad you're helping to preserve their legacy (I'm especially glad I purchased the blu-ray!)! PS I'm always still anxious for new Monkees music so after Dolenz Sings Nesmith, I hope there's another "Good Times" type album.

You know what? I'm not surprised. Cute little button nose Davy may have appeared to be innocent and lovable on the TV, but almost ALL of the interviews I've seen with him present a rather arrogant, cynical to the point of verging on anger, and self-absorbed egotist, who often looked down his nose at his peers. (...or, in his case, should it be "up his nose....the outside I mean, not the nostrils". Just a 'little' SHORT joke.....umm, OK, yeah...forget it
You probably aren't the only one whose experience with David Jones was markedly and memorably negative/disappointing.

Ha! Funny to see that old Laurie House double LP from 1976. As awful as the cover art was, it was the only way a lot of us could get things like "Porpoise Song" back then. And if I remember correctly, "Cuddly Toy" had the cold ending from the TV show on that release.

The Monkees are to music as The Three Stooges are to film and early cinema. Basically, they’re both treated like Rodney Dangerfield.
The Monkees are the cat’s tits. The TV show is best described as avant-garde. (In my opinion.) Their music and the TV show are evergreen. Watching the show as an adult is a trip. It’s really bizarre at times. (you don’t realize the bizarreness of it as a kid because it’s so cartoonish and that’s what your used to. But the show is like a live action cartoon. It’s fast paced. It has a touch of vaudeville with some of the quirky one-liners and zingers. The sped up cuts and camera angles are unusual for a television show. I love the Monkees. I like that they are still around as a cult following. The fans are real. Genuine. They’re not band wagon jumpers. Which is what you get when when something becomes all too popular with the pop-culture.

Thank you for your reply to my comment. I find it very unfortunate to hear about The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame having that attitude towards The Monkees. I personally feel that the hall of fame is being very disingenuous toward them. The Monkees are indeed in other hall of fame organizations, however they still deserve their rightful place in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as well. I'm a bit of an Rock and roll aficionado. I've seen hundreds of live acts throughout the years and have had the privilege to meet a few of the artist as well. I know very well what all of the members of The Monkees have creatively accomplished. They certainly have my respect! If The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, can't see that, then I have to question their vision and competence. The Monkees challenged the status quo and charted their own course. Certainly many of their fellow artist in the industry recognized and understood that. The Monkees took great risks to their careers to accomplish that. It payed off for them. After all these many years thay have had a strong loyal following, that continues to grow. Every time that I have seen them live, there were as many teens and twenty somethings as there were us older fans. There is a course talk and I believe a book called "Why The Monkees Mater". Perhaps the hall of fame should read it. As for me, so long as The Monkees aren't in the hall of fame, I won't be visiting it either. They are in my heart's Hall Of Fame.

You mention by 69 their tour was seen as a comeback. But really, Head was their only "bomb" as record and film. The Birds, The Bees was a #3 record in '68. But after the Head situation it seems nothing could really go right in terms of LP sales in or hit singles.
