    Man you can just see how much it pains the Admiral, Saru, and Burnham how this played out. As the Admiral said, he would have green-lit the mission if asked. But because it was not, and because Burnham defied orders, they're all put in a difficult position. None of them want to do this, but it had to be done. Burnham, while a reliable and competent person, has proven that she is not reliable as a first officer.
    In the end, it's best it turned out this way though, and they all know it. Especially with that line "The only reason you're not in the brig is because you saved lives", an acknowledgement that Burnham was being true to the ideals of the Federation, and being a good representative of the Federation... but not a good officer.

    She has to stay on the ship for this show to work but she's a much better renegade. The way she's evolved puts her at odds with the red tape of Starfleet. Though other SF officers in the past have put their gut before their orders like when Worf saved Jadzia rather than complete his mission. He got dressed down but it had to be done. I'm guessing Tilly will be XO with a promotion.

    I'm thinking that in a weird sense, that Georgio is going to be made the first officer. Sure, she has some pretty shady background, but so did Chakotay. She also has a wealth of command experience, Terran Empire or otherwise, and like Chakotay, this wouldn't be a precedent. Its already happened before.

    • @GenGamesUniverse
      @GenGamesUniverse Před 3 lety +1

      @Bethesda sucks, but Zerglings still are cute. Actually Kirk didn't, he went back in time with the crew to get whales to save earth and starfleet, he disobeyed orders when he was relieved of duty and Enterprise was to be decommissioned and retired with everybody else being transferred to other places like Scotty with the USS Excelsior, even in the reboot Abrhams version, he disobeyed orders NOT to go to Enterprise and stay in starfleet academy as well as NOT to interfere with lifeforms who do not have warp capabilities. That's why Kirk was demoted from Admiral to Captain because he destroyed the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in order for it not to fall into klingon hands.
      Picard also did that too - he disobeyed Starfleets orders in First Contact to not engage the Borg at Sector 001 because of what Jean Luc went through becoming Locutus of Borg. However, Starfleet is not so starry eyed as we all think either; they had several officers on there who were traitors like Sisko's grandfather who betrayed Starfleet in order to start another war with the Klingons, or the Starfleet officer who wanted Picard off of duty as Captain of the Enterprise-D but blew up because she got caught out etc.

    Not demoted - she keeps her rank of commander. Rather, she's been reassigned. In real-life, this would end an officer's career as she would likely never be promoted again. But this is STD, so, yeah, as someone else here said, give her her own command / ship already.

      Somehow to me, it doesn't sound so bad for Michael

    • @SeatBill
      @SeatBill Před 3 lety +6

      She kept her rank, true...but she was demoted in the chain of command on Discovery (and, I think rightly so). Burnham has trust issues; she always had, and she probably always will. She's not the best team player in the crew, because she trusts her own judgement more than she trusts the people around her - and that's what's gotten her in so much trouble. She DOES trust some people more than others; Saru, for one. But she hasn't reached the point where - even with him - she's able to sublimate her drive to solve every problem herself within a team setting.... and that's what's so frustrating with she and Saru. They are friends, obviously; but, he simply can't trust her enough for full friendship, because she keeps compromising it when she shouldn't. He did exactly what he had to do; she's a brilliant person, so she stays on as chief science officer - but she's not at the top of the official chain of command of Discovery any more. And that's probably for the best. Even Tilly recognizes when Burnham's gone past her boundaries!
      Who should replace her as first officer? My choice would be Lt. Nilsson - who should be promoted to Lt. Commander for the role. She replaced Airiam as the spore drive ops officer on the bridge after Airiam's death, and impressed Capt. Pike with the way she took over the position. More than once, she's been given temp. command of the bridge when senior officers are away; and, unlike Burnham, she's a very by-the-book type of officer. Exactly what Saru needs from his first officer. He needs to be able to trust whoever he puts in the center chair when he's not on the bridge.... and she's the best choice. She can't do it as a Lieutenant; she needs more rank in order to lead the rest of the crew, so Saru (and Admiral Vance) should give her a field promotion to Lt. Commander.... while leaving her to also continue as the spore drive ops officer on the bridge. (She can start training someone to back her up in that role when she's busy with first officer duties).
      She's the logical choice; no one else on the bridge has the seniority, experience, or temperament; and she's proven she can run things herself when she needs to. The only people on the bridge who would outrank her would be either Saru or Burnham - and Burnham's no longer first officer herself! Also, as a Lt. Commander, she'll have enough authority to direct Stamets, Culber, or even Reno (who has the rank of Commander herself) and anyone else she needs to - if she's chosen for the position by Saru.

      If I deciphered correctly, I think you're tying to say that you hate that shes intelligent, and she thinks shes always correct, and that she tells men what to do. And every so often she doesn't follow commands...that last one is weird.
      Starting off, yes she thinks shes right. As would anyone who's trained to do something. If we're both trained to do something and there is a problem, you'll probably have one solution, and I'll have another. And hopefully one of ours will be right. It would suck for both of ours to be wrong
      Anyway, we are two different people that may approach the same problem differently. That's the idea.
      And she was trained as Starfleet and first as Vulcan, with logic being the main idea..so of COURSE shes going to think shes always right.
      She tells men what to do? I mean, honestly, the Male characters amare either gay, like the docs, is a security guardwho's, by rank and situation, under her, or that alien who spent most of his whole existencein fear. Shte he was able to become the leader, but that was all part of HIS journey. To have gone through all he has.
      What were seeing are multiple journeys.
      So..do.you feel like Burnham is a man hater who tells ALL men what to do? Why do you feel that way? Cause you relate to the doc and scientist who's job position is under her and maybe you're gay? Because you're an alien who lives life in fear but has this commanding lady who's ready to make the next I initiative? Because you're a security officer who has skills, but has been abused and tortured and havent gotten over that as of yet?
      Why do you FEEL she's just some loufh mouth, man hating woman? Cause other than those reasons, there really is no hint of that in her character.
      Or are you an evil captain from another universe trying to kill everyone for your all in cause to get back to your barbaric universe, where she doesn't see through yourplans, but she knows that certain things you're doing is out of character w
      To who starfleet is. And while she DOES agree with some things, she knows the line where its making sure things happen vs all out fuck you to starfleet.
      So, again, what part of man hating do you relate to?
      And mind you, in a 36yr kid man as if the day I'm posting this. Bday just passed yesterday. I've grown through the TNG fmphase all through the rest of star trek. Ik. O need about it nor am I gay. I'm not even the Biggest Fan of star trek. I simply always thought it was Kinda interesting.

    I agree tbh, her insuborniate actions and her obsession to do things cuz she deems them necessary have put others at risk even with some results being positive, the command structure exists for a reason and since she hasnt gone through starfleet academy to learn the most basic realities of being a starfleet officer all the way back to the 1st episode, she just isnt capable of responsible positions, also i dont like how she just accepts the punishment saying saru did the right thing only for her to do the very actions again in like 2 episodes after, like she has in every episode prior

    I hate to just jump on all the Burnham-hate, but she really does drag down the show she's supposed to be the main character of. EVERY character in the show is more interesting and compelling than she is. She briefly had some relatability when she was squabbling with Spock, but that's gone now and once again she's just an overacting Mary Sue. I sincerely hope the show will dump her at the end of the season and spend the rest of its run focusing on its much better supporting cast.

      @@dwnkaomwn3953 Well Saru put her in that position instead of going to the admiral in the first place and sharing the information with starfleet. Instead of being a good leader he said no end of discussion. On top of that he did it based on his own assumption on how broken starfleet is and what they can handle, and there is an 80 percent chance he doesn't know all the ins and outs of whats going on. To quote Tilly "Saru made that choice and didn't give starfleet a choice in the matter" so in that sense he messed up for both starfleet and Burnham. I don't disagree that Burnham messed up but Saru has some blame too. She also needs to either get herself back in the starfleet mindset or leave the show because I am sick and tired of the Burnham effect.

    I don’t watch this show but I saw the first three episodes. I have nothing against it in its pursuit for diversity, which has always been an important part of Star Trek, but I hate the way this series is filmed. Especially shots like 2:09
    In style I think it looks overproduced and ugly, it’s not very charming or tasteful whatsoever.

    • @jschools1392
      @jschools1392 Před 3 lety +1

      I disagree, the dutch tilt in this scene emphasizes how Saru has to compose himself and be the "bigger man" and do what he doesn't want to do while it shows Burnham in a "small" position. Also dutch tilts are supposed to show a state of confusion where the character is struggling (other lesser directors have overused it so badly that now it's a punch line). I'd say that in this instance, when Saru has to punish Burnham even though he doesn't want to is perfect for using a dutch tilt.

      @Mar celo Wesley got better as TNG went on, was given less screen time, was made less prominent overall, and eventually left the show as he joined that Traveler Dude to explore the galaxy. The thing is... Wesely is better than Burnham because he was never worshipped the way Burnham is on Discovery.
      Sure, Wesley would save the day sometimes, and be obnoxious, but he also would get called out on it by other characters, and no one would ever feel BAD about calling him out, unlike in Discovery with Tilly and Saru who both seem to feel conflicted for some reason about reprimanding Burnham for her insubordination and obnoxious behavior.
