Barcelona’s front line has been the subject of a lot of debate this season, and coach Xavi Hernandez has been unable to settle on a consistent front three. In particular, the left wing position has been a problem area.
So today we’re going in-depth on what I like to call the ‘Inside Forward’ role, and figure out what kind of player Barca need to sign for the long-term project.…

Seeing this video after this summer window is wild, Barça's board basically went after a player for every single profile you mentioned:
    1- Pivot - Romeu
    2- Right Back - Cancelo
    3- Right Interior - Gundogan
4- Inside Foward - Vitor Roque
5- Hybrid Foward - João Félix
    Fantastic! I'm hyped!

Xavi is a good coach, still young in this new career. But he uses what he learned from Guardiola, adapting to the new model of football, but keeping Barcelona's DNA.
In the season so far, Xavi has fielded some players at the left end of the field. They played in the same position: Dembelé, Raphinha, Ansu Fati, Ferrán and even Gavi. This happened because of the injuries and also because of the tactical variability that Xavi himself imposes. For example, Gavi playing on the left winger has an important tactical aspect, he goes deep into the field and opens up the left corridor for Balde or Jordi Alba to support in attack, and defensively he has a line of four midfielders, which is good for Busquets, for example.
Even with all this, a left winger is needed, who knows how to pass to the other attackers, knows how to shoot well, is good at one on one, creates chances for the midfielders to act in the passes and has a conscious defensive tactical. Kvaratskhelia, Saint-Maximin would be good signings as Ferrán and Ansu Fati can no longer generate space, can't make good one-on-one plays and don't contribute to the team.
*OBS*: I'm Brazilian, so if I didn't use perfect English, I apologize for that.😅

How much the absence of a player can hurt a team can be seen in the state of Pedriless Barcelona? He makes Barcelona shine from everywhere, Barcelona look more organized when Pedri is in the team. To become such a big part of the team at such a young age is remarkable and doubt if a like for like replacement could be found? No one else seems to be able to replicate the overall impact Pedri has on the team, be it his technical skills or mentality. Through his quality and virtue, he has created a dilemma ourselves. But, if I had to put my bet on someone then I would bet on Florian Wirtz. His features, qualities, styles etc., mimic Pedri's presence on the field and his ceiling is also high as he is young and the correct deficiencies of his game can be molded.

    Interesting topic and views.
Concerning the roles within our forward line, I think it requires 2 of the 3 to offer significant goals. It happens in the current dynamics we have a CF in Lewandowski who needs service to truly thrive and Dembele the agent of chaos winger (Raphinha the interloper) then a massive question over the LWF.
I do agree with your conclusions about Ferran Torres. I think we should cash in on him, look to reinvest/strengthen the squad. Maybe a free pick-up like Marcus Thuram.
Concerning Fati you mentioned This Version of him.... I don't think this is the real Ansumane Fati. This is the confidence deficient one, he's always second guessing himself forcing him to over think, force things or rush. A far cry from the intelligent, technically gifted, suave attacker that had a golden finishing ability. The version of Fati I hope could return would be a perfect fit as our LWF especially in tandem with an attack minded LB.... allowing him to get into the box to do his beat work.
For now Gavi is the best option based on current availability and form.
I'd love for us to go after Gundogan; could be an amazing stopgap adding much needed fluidity and dynamism to the MF.
Besides the likes of Leao, Kvaratskhelia seems that ideal blend of creativity and goals. Don't see us going that route anytime soon.

I don't know how we always win games by such small margins - is it because of our defense or our forwards failure to convert chances. But it seems to me that our attack in the final third needs to be sharper, more lethal because if we leave everything to luck, it will turn against us in time. Crossing seems to be one of the ways to score goals but it's better to time it or find another way. The opposition have chances to score in many games but we are saved by a narrow margin whether we accept it or try to improve. There are many things hidden behind the scenes but still waiting for the ideal Barcelona that will always show the steady, familiar, consistent side on this turbulent, changing stage of the football world.

We need better output from wingers, right now we score the odd goal from a midfielder and Lewandowski's output has diminished recently as he is needing to drop deeper to help on creation. Once Pedri is back we should be able to play Lewy more up forward, and more goals should arrive, however the winger output would still be an issue.

Although I don't agree with Ansu being a cf, I do get your point. Currently, he's not working, but I agree, we can't write him off just yet, but on the left side, not as a cf. He needs confidence and playtime. If Ferran leaves this summer, then I hope Xavi can give him a string of games to get comfortable and his confidence back. Imo, putting him as a cf and making him grow into the role would just make him the new Sergi Roberto. This isn't bad since I believe Sergi is undervalued by barca fans, but I agree that Sergi was never the solution to our RB problems. Same with Ansu as a cf, he can do the job and, at times, he'll look good, but he won't be the solution to our cf problem once Lewandowski leaves.
My hope is that Ansu and Balde can grow together and build chemistry to make our left side extremely dangerous.

The "inside forward" as you call it is clearly a make up of three roles; winger, midfielder and finisher. Nobody does that better than Vini at RM. However seeing as that's not an option I would argue that Ansu is actually the best choice in future and whoever we get would just be to help smooth that transition. on the case of Ansu though, he is actually technically proficient and is our best 1v1 player after Ousmane or at least he used to be before his injury. A torn meniscus affects the knee, which is devastating to a player who is expected to turn on a dime, and you can see that he is not comfortable putting to much pressure on that part of his body which is psychological but very understandable. I guess what Im saying is that we need to be patient with him, similar to Rashford at United.

I usually watch all barca games and when he's playing as a central striker is completely lost and almost didn't touch any ball.
Personally I like Ferran more as a central striker than Ansu, though his best position is RW and opposite to Ansu he's completely lost as a LW with the IF role.

LW- Sell Ferran and loan Fati, as well as bringing in Marcus Thurman for free and get Abde back from loan.
St-Spend some money on a backup striker, I heard that Victor Roque is coming soon but I would prefer Julian Alvarez
Midfield- Zubimendi would be ideal if busquets ends up leaving, Florian Wirtz would also be huge. Pablo Torre should be sold as he isn’t getting any minutes. Kessie deserves to stay for another season but not complaining if he is sold for profit.
Fullbacks- The big elephant in the room. Roberto is nowhere near Barca level much less as a rb, Julian Araujo should easily become a starter as he is a natural rb. As for Lb, Jordi Alba should be sold to bring in someone new.

Due to the way the brain works (and neural networks work), the way of really getting this Be Your Best technology to work is to provide seamlessly realistic graphism. You don't want to be recognizing situations of players perceived as simulated. The virtual players, AND THE SURROUDINGS of the football court need to be indistinguishable from reality to train exactly what you want to train, also the movement of the players should be as realistic as possible. This is clearly the future (if its not yet there for big clubs). The next step is have AI suggest the lines of pass. I would be really surprised if no one is doing this yet with all the millions that are at stake and the status of technology which is already capable of getting to this point.

lack of creativity from our team is why we struggle. pedri and dembele are our most creative players and balde isnt of the levels of jordi alba when it comes to those crucial cutbacks and crosses in the final third. our midfielders have similar profiles and you can see busquets playing more advance to try and break lowblocks in recent games and he has had 2 assists so far but that takes alot from busquets because of his age, he can't play box to box. the reason why we struggle is solely due to lack of quality in our bench and missing crucial players.

  • @daniaaal
    @daniaaal Před rokem +1

Do you think Messi might fit into the right-interior "midfielder" well, at least for the short-term? I've watched your previous video on Barca's midfield and concur with how placing Pedri on the right side of midfield might take away his creative output. Having Messi would solve that creative and attacking threat on the right-interior.
However, I do acknowledge that due to Messi's profile and age, he won't be able to do much defensive work in the right-interior midfield, so my next question is: would it then benefit Barca to sign a "destroyer" profile for a CDM (e.g. Sofyan Amrabat of Morocco) and play him behind Messi? Because we cannot rely on Busquets forever as well. I am aware that my questions relate to solving short-term issues and that eventually Barca would need to find younger, long-term replacements.
Here's an example of how a possible "diamond" formation might look like, with new signings:
Juan Foyth (RB, RCB) - 25m market value
Amrabat (CDM) - 25m market value
Gundogan (CDM, LCM, RCM, LAM) - Free transfer
Messi (RCM, CAM, CF) - Free transfer
(4-2-3-1 that can shift to a diamond midfield with Pedri as a left hybrid winger/midfielder. Gundogan and Gavi can come on for Pedri or other midfielders too)
    ter Stegen
    Juan Foyth Kounde Araujo Balde
    Amrabat De Jong/Gundogan
    Dembele Messi Pedri/Gavi
    Lewandowski

    • @ludwigvanbeethoven6842
      @ludwigvanbeethoven6842 Před rokem

If you wanted to make Messi the RW inside forward you'd have to get a RB like Dani Alves was or Hakimi is in PSG, to ovelap that right side like Balde and Alba do on the left side. And on top of all of that all of our current wide wingers are better suited in that right side (Dembele, Raphinha, Torres), Abde could come in handy for a wide LW if that happens, but then what do you do with the current attacking LBs (Balde and Alba)? To fit Messi in the team you would have to sacrifise so much and spend so much money for it to currently work. Yes he is the most creative player ever but even fitting hi in the midfield would greatly ruin our defensive and pressing structure which is very important and has kept us winning all these 1-0 games.

I think the better version of Gavi in this role is just... Gavi. He's perfect for this role and lacks control to play as an interior in the big games.
Thus if we take another left winger, we will just create another issues, probably bigger than those we have right now...
If we keep raphinha next season, I hope Xavi will switch in some games to ask the RB to become the right Winger (Sergi) and isolate the LW in 1vs1. This would allow the likes Ansu to have space and take advantage of his pace, like in the old days. And Rpahinha to play in the right half space, which is his prefered position...
