She is amazing! So refreshing and upbeat. I love her personality. I personally wanted her and Colin Bridgerton to work out on the show, but I understood that the books took another tact. I just thought her character and Colin were so cute together.

WOKE IN WONDERLAND
But where is the balance? This show has a HUGE cast and yet the only young woman of color is depicted as a "strong", defiant baby mamma. This is common racist trope constantly used to depict black women as promiscuous sub-humans incapable of making good choices. There was no balance, the only character to represent young women of color has the worst story of all. You're telling me this is the only representation possible in a show that literally used it's "diversity" as a selling point? As if they couldn't find a way to get a young black woman (say a Caribbean sugar plantation heiress like "Sanditon" did) to balance out the representation and give a normal story line to? As if the only plot line relevant to young women of color is living a life defined by strength and the ability to endure a life of hardships. Sterortypical racist rubbish, Marina's story line was trash and the show would be better off without it.
You're looking for racism where there is none.
Good actress, but my least favorite character. We didn't need the ONLY representation of a young black-ish woman to be a defiant, ignorant "baby mamma".
I’m not sure what character you saw but, she was not an ignorant baby mama. She was strong, loving, and intelligent. Her child’s father died in war. She got caught up in the foolish schemes of the Featheringtion Matriarch. Lying, scheming, jealous, and manipulation was Lady Featherington’s character. I like when Marina pointed out to her she was not ashamed of hard working people.
@@karenalara212 We didn't need the "strong black woman" trope either. She was the only character relying on this when all the other girls had made it very clear that they were raised for this moment from birth. Everyone seemed to know that except .....Marina. I can't believe that she didn't know or wasn't educated in the importance of finding a husband first, therefore she was defiant, not giving two shits about the "marriage before baby" that EVERYONE knew about and was raised with from birth (kissing was enough to duel over a lady's honor about, Marina knew this). Lady Featherington did her best by this girl, who she didn't even want in the first place, by showing her what her true position in society would be. Sure, Marina "isn't ashamed of working people" because that's not a life she really knows. 10 minutes staring at dirty people is a lot different than having to actually suck a syphilitic dick in order to get the money for some bread for your child with tuberculosis. Saying, "oh poor people are okay by me" is different than actually being one, especially when you're rich. If Lady Featherington was so bad and Marina doesn't mind hard labor while being pregnant, she could have said, "Peace out bitches, I''ll earn my keep as a tavern wench and make my own way..." But she doesn't do that, does she?
Marina schemes were especially foolish, and particularly cruel as pointed out to her SEVERAL TIMES by Penelope but Marina simply didn't care. Once again, the only speaking part by a young woman of color is a stereotypical trope, the most tragic story, and characterized by a cunning, ruthless, unconscionably stupid young woman. We could have done without it.
@@theprimitivista You're comparing girls of immense wealth to a character from more modest means. I love Daphne, but the poor girl and her brother didn't know how to use a stove. It's not her "fault" she wasn't sheltered like the rich girls.

@@theprimitivista She was far from ignorant. At least she knew how children are conceived. She was much more than how you described her. She was a multi-faceted and complex character. The benefit of having multiple African descent characters is none of them have to represent “ the race”. Like the white characters, some are noble, some are villains, some are rich, some are poor. We have a Duke, a Queen, a Bad dad, a prideful boxer, his loving wife, and an independent business woman, and an unwed mother. That is diversity. Do you want them to all be perfect?
