I only found about it a year or so ago after seeing a photo of Rory Gallagher and Paul performing together. I bought Andy and Paul's album that day and I've listened to it nearly every day since
Wonderful Song.My great, great grandfather, James Campbell was in the 5th Dragoon Guards when Mary Kane met him in Dublin in 1850. Must be their song! James went off to fight in the Crimea. Their son John was born in 1851 and he too joined the regiment. I can't believe I missed this song in the late 70's. It's now in my repertoire.
@@marcusosullivan7029 Paul is one of my guitar heroes! I've learnt this song, plus Arthur McBride, and the Lakes of Pontchartrain, and while I can play them in the same style (tuning and all that) there are things he does with his right hand that i simply CANNOT get down. Some of these guitar parts sound like he's picking three guitars at once, and god I just love his playing and respect him to bits!! I wish he was more widely known among guitar players
At this point of his career I think Paul Brady was peerless - he just couldn' t put a foot wrong. His guitar playing is of course what hits you first, but then when you listen you realise how unobtrusively virtuosic his singing is.
I love Paul and Andy--their great album which I bought in the 1970s and, like others, I love them still. Theirs is universal music, enjoyed by anyone with eyes, ears and, most of all, a heart. This from a Jewish guy from Philadelphia. Sing on, boys, may you always. And thanks for the posting.

My heart aches ive been born too late. only to appreciate such beauty from so far away generational and geographical. why did we ever leave the shore? i wish i could ask the old ones now............while my old heart aches in this young husk. sometimes i think i wont be happy till im dead.

Great song and performance. 'Mary and the Soldier' Lyrics: Come all you lads of high renown that will hear of a fair young maiden And she roved out on a summer's day for to view the soldier's parading They march so bold and they look so gay The colours fine and the bands did play And it caused young Mary for to say "I'll wed you me gallant soldier" She viewed the soldiers on parade and as they stood at their leisure And Mary to herself did say: "At last I find my treasure But oh how cruel my parents must be To banish my true love away from me Well I'll leave them all and I'll go with thee Me bold and undaunted soldier" "Oh Mary dear, your parents' love I pray don't be unruly For when you're in a foreign land, believe you rue it surely Perhaps in battle I might fall From a shot from an angry cannonball And you're so far from your daddy's hall Be advised by a gallant soldier." "Oh I have fifty guineas in right gold, likewise a hearth that's burning And I'd leave them all and I'd go with you me bold undaunted soldier So don't say no but let me go And I will face the daring foe And we'll march together to and fro And I'll wed you, my gallant soldier" And when he saw her loyalty and Mary so true-hearted He said: "Me darling, married we'll be and nothing but death will part us And when we're in a foreign land I'll guard you, darling, with my right hand And hopes that God might stand a friend With Mary and her gallant soldier"
Last heard this on an album in '76 and have never seen even a video of them before. It took me about a week to figure out this song and an afternoon to transcribe the lyrics! Thanks for the upload. Just learned I can get a tab booklet with the CD! (CZcams rocks!)
