Someone once told me that, the iron will I have within myself and such pride for is the same will that drives the negatives in me. The key is to recognise which mode you're in.
When it drives you to succeed, let it loose. When it drives your inner demons, block it and take back control.
You're a truly inspirational athlete and person Tia. Thank you for sharing and good luck in 2020.

I had a similar experience with a stress fracture in my back. I really appreciated hearing your perspective. Before I married my husband, I was struggling with stubbornness and made many injuries worse because of it. Right now I am dealing with some rotator cuff pain and I decided to take a few days off of training. Thanks for convincing me it was the right decision. Short term rest for long term gains. You’re incredible.

Thank you so much for sharing this! Perfect timing in our little bubble...My 15 year old son attended his first CrossFit class yesterday and he did great with burpees and calorie bike...We had the "listen to your body/check the ego" talk when we registered him. It was nice to hear/see your authentic reflection and share it with him too!
Such a powerful lesson I take heed to, also, as I continue to CF in my forties....

This story sounds very close to what happened to me. I lost a lot of weight in 2014/2015, after I was done a friend challenged me to gain muscle. So, I hit the gym, rain or shine, 6-days a week. I was always lifting weight. It wasn't a little weight either, I was squatting with four 45-lb plates on each side of the bar. If didn't have traps, just keep shrugging everything; Didn't have biceps, just keep curling. I knew I definitely had back pain, I just thought it was genetic. When I moved to this big city in 2018, the pain got worse, walking on linoleum felt like stepping on cold needles. Then, one day I was working my job at this small newsstand/lotto terminal and all of a sudden I just got hit with a ton of pain, it felt like a cattleprod to the spine, and I couldn't walk. I fell against the back counter and couldn't move for nearly an hour.
The next day, I went to the student medical centre at my university. They examined me and said I was not using proper form in the gym, I was lifting too often, and kind of unrelated, I'm autistic and had to be taught how to walk normally as a kid, but have trouble doing it, I often revert to the wrong way because it's how I've always done it. I was given a lecture by a back specialist who did stretches and retaught me how to walk, then was sent for a deep back massage where the masseuse commented that my back was like a bush of rose-thorns. That's when I went to this gym I didn't belong to, but I knew it for producing CrossFit top 20'ers and 2 gold medal Olympic athletes, also all of it's trainers had PhDs. I hired one of their trainers and within four sessions spread over a month, the trainer whipped me into shape and drilled good form into my head. They literally refuse you weight belts because you need to learn proper form, lol, but it worked.

  • @Jillousa
    @Jillousa Před 3 lety

It was devastating for me when I had to take a break from Crossfit because of a shoulder injury and I became a runner when that happened. I'm thankful I recovered from the injury and I found the sport of running that I love! I took a break from Crossfit just in time. However, the lesson I learned helped me to never miss a race! My first goal for every race was to get to the starting line healthy! I've run 5 marathons and 7 half marathons and learned to listen to my body and that just about every training season I would have about a week where I would needed to tone the training down quite a bit. The lessons from Crossfit helped me to never miss a race! Now I'm back at CrossFit and feeling great! This second to go around the CrossFit is different because I'm at a different box and they practice level method. I really like the level method at my CrossFit gym because the workouts seem to be scaled so perfectly for where I am at. It gives me realistic and doable goals towards my bigger goals and allows me to celebrate my small accomplishments along the way. Level method helps me to resist the temptation to do too much. It gives Endless Options for scaling and celebrates a lot of small steps in the journey.

    Hi Tia-Clair and Shane,
I've only just watched this recording and as a Sports/Remedial/Soft Tissue Therapist based in the UK this was actually brilliant to see as I get so many athletes coming into my studio and have been thinking the same way as you did, yes we can rebuild most of them but sadly there are times when we cannot. For us the first 72 hours are critical we can do so much more the earlier we get the injury.
I always say to every client listen to your body it will tell you when it needs a rest, it will tell you when it needs help.
So thank you again for putting this out there as it can only help others
    Regards
    John Mitchell (MIRSM)

Well Tia, you wasn't silly, just without experience, I remember when I was young in my career like Judo Athlete, at 23 years, I've made Deadlift with 198 Kg, was ok that repetition, but I've tried to do with 200 Kg, was a failure, I was stubborn, I felt a pain in L Spine, was similar like your story. Well now I'm 53 years old, and in this long couple of years I've learnt more about biomechanics, recovery, foundantional movements, about sport science, about strength and conditioning etc., and now I am able to make my training and for others with weights or just with my body in safe, why because I let my ego down, and I understand that wisdom and patience are so important in everything I do. I think the older you get the less choice your body gives you on whether you listen to it or not. My wife is a physiotherapist so I am fortunate that I can tell her immediately when I feel pain and get health advice and she will immediately tell me not to workout when it is a problem even when I want to ignore it. There's a workout mentality about working through the pain but I think a lot of people don't know their bodies well enough to differentiate between the pain you can and should push their and the kind of pain that could be a hint at a serious injury. My opinion "Don't be a hero". If you feel pain rather have it checked, if you are sick don't go workout, and for goodness sake if you are sick don't go to work. I digress, this is an important message in this video.

People love to brag about never taking a rest day and then they wind up with a serious injury. I sometimes resist changing up my routine even tho I know those aches and pains are telling me to rest (about to turn 43!)😬 Your vid was a good reminder.

I am a bodybuilder for 17 years and i had done couple shows and decided at my 30 years old birthday to fold the bodybuilding page and start with the crossfit life , but before doing it physically, i made sooooo many researchers about it theoretically to know what is it , and the things you should consider first to learn :
1- leave your ego outside the gym and be beginner no matter what is your sport background…
2-Be patient with your self and go on your own pace and don’t rush your self to catch up with others and get hyped up because it can cause you an injury..
3- learn how to eat properly to maintain your muscles and recovery at the same time ..
4- learn all the recovery tips because its almost the key to the success in the crossfit ..
5- train and work hard but listen to your body very well …
6- hire a coach for weight lifting and Olympic lifting because its the most dangerous part …
7- drink a lot of water and take your supplements and track your caloric input and output…
If you do those steps before you step in to the crossfit box … man you will get a huge results out of it … pls correct me if am wrong about something 🙏💪🏼😊

As you have inspired me to push my fitness boundaries , my current PR for a mile is 6:13 as of yesterday. Thanks for what its worth...

Wow Tia?!? Thanks for the best advice, weird thing is I'm struggling with a shoulder injury for over 3 months now. Ever since we've gone to lockdown, as soon as it gets better then I would train and the pain keeps coming back. I kept putting it off until I decided to go see a chiropractor and she didn't seem find any serious issues. Cause of my worry, the thought of me with the time lost on my fitness progressions I kept on training at home & worked through my pain. Things just got worse, to a point I couldn't train if I wanted to anymore and that totally fustrated me and made me worry?!?! What if I can't workout anymore or be active?!? Myabe I've torn something as I experienced a torn ACL many years back. So I decided to totally stop training for about 3 weeks. I just started again this week and I seem to get my strength back and the pain hasn't come back, so thank goodness!!! What a relieve, I'm still taking it easy now. Gyms are allowed to re-open now in SA so have to see if it's safe to go back but I can't wait for things to get back to some what a normal routine... 😷

From what I have observed, Elite cross fit athletes are very similar in training intensity to professional 🏈 players also boot camp training in the US Army or Marines. They over train in general. In football, players get into tremendous condition for a career that lasts maybe 5 years. After that the body starts to break down under the stress placed on it.
Crossfit athletes appear to have driven personalities that cause them to push past the limits of most ppl. In the 20s or even 30s this may not be an issue. But over the long term this will detrimental to good health as the body begins to breakdown. There are exceptions (there always are) but I have learned as I get older (I am 59) one definitely has to cut back and be more attentive to the body. Otherwise you end up hurting yourself and/or overtraining which also leads to injury.
Keep in mind that high level cross fit athletes do tjis for a living and commit to 3-4hr days of training. This is too much for regular working ppl. Moral if the story? Have fun, train smart, think long term.

Reminds me of the time I was training for a half marathon and got a virus that I wasnt recovering from that caused me to become really dizzy and fatigued. Instead of resting up I went out running not wanting to miss any training. Next thing I know Ive passed out on the concrete path at about 11pm while out on my own without a phone. I hobbled over to car at the lights and they rang an ambulance. 10 stitches in my nose and torn ligaments in my knee.

Thank you for this Tia. I was listening to your story and it was like someone else was telling my own. I went through the exact same process, both physically and mentally, and was in pain for more than a year just because I was way too stubborn and too scared of being told that I had to stop. Nevertheless I learned so much from this experience, and I think it has made me a more mature athlete, and I'm sure it did the same for you 🖤

Finally! Someone who admits what I see in the gym regularly. Cross fit athletes need to learn to train lift weights properly! Incorrect form from squats will set you back and can end the journey. I hope this resonates with folks.

I think an issue with Crossfit athletes getting inured is in the way they think. The mental determination/toughness that we consider an asset can be a detriment when it comes to slowing down, listening to the body and recovery.

I like how my CrossFit gym has for Quality days so it's almost like recovery is built into the program. For Quality means that it's not graded your only goal for that day is to do the best quality possible--

Thank you Tia for sharing your story. Your wisdom will help many avoid the pitfalls of pride over listening to your body. I have been doing CF for 11 years now and in that time broke my back and have had a full knee replacement. I have fully recovered from both and CF has been a huge part of my recovery. Early on in CF it was so easy to let ego run the show. Today I am wiser. In it for the long haul!

Kept squatting with back pain.....i injured my back and no way I could have kept going, the next day was hell, took two months to get better. I made it worst by constantly trying to stretch it out, crack my back, and foam roll....only when i stopped, and just focus on posture it started to correct it's self.

    • @rasher331
      @rasher331 Před 4 lety +2

You need to be very careful foam rolling your back at any time. Theres only certain areas you should foam roll and the spinal area is not one of them.

Looks to me Shane wasn't alert enough in the beginning. Later on he had to know YOU TCT would train through pain until you'd be cripple so tha speak🤷🏻‍♂️AND my common sense says..SHANE KNEW but he didn't had the guts to confront you but also wanted you to win no matter ...🤔☝️I'm sticking with that analogy, sorry Tia. Hoping you will recover 100%. Cuz I read your 6th consecutive WIN👸 was *despite* you was competing with an old stress fracture problem. Having that said: thanks for all of your inspiration and Shane's too. Today I learned how one can train symmetri with a bar and sandbags. I thought that was very interesting to see and put my sport mind to👌👍✌
