The thing I love about Donna is that she doesn't hesitate to call the Doctor on his crap. Rose and Martha put him on a pedestal. Donna treats him like a peer. They manage to convey a huge affection for each other without even a hint of romance.

@Paula C I agree that each companion was what he needed at that point in time. And I didn't mean to say that Rose and Martha never ever called the Doctor out. But Donna seems to do it more readily than the others. Or maybe it just seems that way.
The Doctor is an impressive and unique figure. The last of the Time Lords, The Oncoming Storm, all that. But he's also a person, with feelings and failings. And it always seemed to me that Donna treated him as a person first and as The Doctor second.
Of course, she tends to do that with everybody they encounter. She looks beyond the title or position and sees the person, and what that person is going through. Which is exactly what the Doctor needed right then.
Not saying that she's objectively better than the others. Like your said, they each were perfect at that particular time. Just saying that that's what I subjectively like about her.

@@FANTHEORYTV Read the book "The Writer's Tale". (Actually, get the extended version, "The Writer's Tale: The Final Chapter".) It's a long e-mail conversation between RTD and Doctor Who Magazine Editor (at the time) Benjamin Cook, stretching from the start of his writing Series 4 (and with the extended version, he goes through to the Specials). You get SUCH an in-depth look at Russell's thought process while he's writing Series 4 and the Specials. There's also a fairly heartbreaking part of the e-mail chain since it's during filming Series 3 that he's writing Series 4, which is when David Tennant's mother lost her battle with cancer. :(

Penny Carter was also going to be a love interest and that the Doctor was going to fall in love with her at first sight 'with both hearts'. And as much as I love Donna, I kinda wish we got that story as well, as I think he REALLY needed to get over Rose.
But no, sadly, a) they made Donna a platonic relationship (though I still ship them anyway, as Tennant and Tate have WAAAY more chemistry than Ten and any other companion, IMO) and b) they treated Penny terribly in this episode (still not sure why they made fun of her -- she was doing all the same sort of sleuthing that Donna was, but Donna ended up getting helped by the Doctor and that was the only real difference. I thought Penny showed herself to ALSO be great companion material and it's not like Sarah Jane wasn't also an investigative reporter, so I don't know why she was treated so badly, but whatever. It's not like the Tenth Doctor doesn't usually treat other POCs like crap too. 😡).

@Nicole Mazza How was Penny treaten like crap? She was snooping around got caught the doctor freed her and instead of hiding or leaving she gets caught again frankly the doctor did more then enough for her. I'm glad Donna wasn't a love interest it made her character 10x better then both Martha and Rose, she was the first companion in new who not to pine after the doctor and hold her own as a good companion. Plus it tons of episodes the doctor mostly focuses on his companion, look at Martha's first episode he says to her come along but to leave the other girl behind because she'll "drag them down".

Welcome to series 4!! Considered by most to be the best series of Doctor Who from the modern era, possibly ever! It's certainly my favourite at least! Also, Donna's back! She's one of, if not the most popular companion ever and Ten/Donna is one of the most loved Doctor/companion partnerships ever. Donna is definitely my favourite and Ten/Donna is easily my favourite Doctor/companion duo. The writers develop Donna's character incredibly well across this series and the relationship between her and the Doctor is lots of fun. They will definitely have moments of disagreement, but there's very little of that childish bickering from "The Runaway Bride" anymore. It's also more of a best friends kind of thing rather than any romantic stuff. They both constantly challenge each other to be better, it's a relationship of equals. I don't think any two actors in Doctor Who had as much chemistry as Tennant and Tate did; it seemed effortless, when they were onscreen together. The next episode is a bit of an underappreciated classic imo, so I'm really looking forward to that one and most of this series tbh. This series is amazing from start to finish and quite like the previous series, the last six episodes is a tremendous run of episodes. This episode itself is a fun first episode, but it gets so much better than this. Get ready for a lot of intense, action packed episodes.

@@anonymes2884 No, the reason why I think series 4 is the most popular is because series 4 ranks at the top (or no lower than 3rd) on any best series poll and ranking list I've ever seen. It also has the highest average ratings for any modern Who series. The logical conclusion would be that it's the most popular series.

The nice thing about Donna as a companion, which you've already seen a bit of this episode, is that she doesn't take shit from anyone. Not even the Doctor! And that is what he sorely needs. And as for Rose. Rose Who? Oh, wait. Wouldn't that be her married name?

One of the reasons I didn't like Donna growing up (this was the first full season I watched as a kid but I saw a lot of Season 1 and 2) was because I was a massive Rose fan and like she is my favorite modern Who companion and secondly I didn't how it seemed nearly every episode Donna would ask to go home when things got really tough and dark. U see that a lot in the next two episodes. Now days I think Donna is great, she is my second favorite New Who companion but yeah thats sort of what I think a lot of people thought about Donna when this was new

My first time through, I despised Donna. I held to that hatred for several rewatches, but when I started watching reactors, someone mentioned the fact that Catherine Tate's first episode as Donna was meant to be a one-off. She was written as a one dimensional, annoying as FRELL character. That's who I despise. Because once she was cast and brought back, they gave her depth and growth and okay, I no longer hate Donna. I vastly prefer Martha, but I'm excited to watch the Donna episodes more now.
Also, I have an Adipose and have taken pictures with it hanging out with my cats and they're adorable.
