- Oaxaca is one of Mexico's culinary hotspots. The state's geography and indigenous cultures all play a part in its phenomenal food culture. In this Oaxaca food tour we're travelling about 40 minutes outside of Oaxaca city to the town of Tlacolula, which holds a traditional market day every Sunday. People flood in from neighbouring villages and towns to trade, shop, eat and catch up with their neighbours. We eat our way around Tlacolula market including a rare Oaxacan street food including tejate- a pre-Hispanic drink of the Mixtec and Zapotec people. Also on the menu- barbacoa de chivo (goat barbacoa) and we grill up our own massive Mexican street food feast alongside the locals in the meat hall- what an experience! What we ate and where we ate it:
1. Tejate
2. Barbacoa de chivo (tacos and consomme)
3. Tasajo (cured beef), avocados, salsa roja, cebollitas (small onions) and tortillas
All eaten at Tlacolula Market held every Sunday. We caught a bus to Tlacolula for $20MXN each (one way) from outside of the baseball stadium in Oaxaca City. Buses back to Oaxaca City leave from the bus station in Tlacolula throughout the day. The price is the same upon return to Oaxaca City.

Hahaha...whoops 😂 I would have given a more in-depth description when saying there wouldn’t be tacos during the start of the other video but felt I’d gone on long enough. I was meaning the more traditional street tacos etc...all a bit wrong I know but hopefully you get the idea? That wee girl was so cute wasn’t she. I didn’t notice her while filming but picked up on her while editing. There was a cute wave at the camera which I believe didn’t make it into the video from memory. They were such a lovely family. Everyone see those big goat tacos they had? In Sonora, Chihuahua and Coahuila they call those burritos. But Oaxaca has actually been making those for thousands of years, except they initially stuffed them with ingredients they had before the arrival of the Spanish such as chili peppers, squash, corn, rabbit and turkey.

My grandma is from Oaxaca and her food is always amazing, better than my mom's, and my mom's food is amazing as well , everyone praises it. But than my great grandma , the mother of my grandma, her food is unimaginable.. it's like the women from Oaxaca make the best tasting food.

Absolutely love this video. I'm enjoying both your inputs on the same foods. That maize drink looks interesting. Omg barbacoa de chivo I've missed that. Mom learned to make it and hers was amazing. The dyi BBQ was fantastic, like a community party. Thomas's eyes when biting the knob onion/cebollita was epic. I love wrapping them in foil with salt and olive oil, tossing on the charcoal when I'm grilling sweet taste. Teaching River Spanish atm, because I see we need to go to Oaxaca.

We have bowls and cups from Mexico very similar to the bowl you drank your breakfast out of! Even met the person who made them ! Such wonderful people! Did you go to Do Mercado? That was where we bought our bowls!
The taco and soup lunch looked so good! Like making your own tacos with the tortias and side dishes that went with your soup and the foot long tacos besides! You must have been stuffed!

As I saw you buying two Avocados I wondered how you cut them open and thought to myself, oh nooo you better should have a Swiss Army knife this would be the perfect situation for it... and voila😂 Haha makes me happy to see that iconic piece of my country is carried with you, you definetly prepared very well for this adventure😁 And what a joy to watch, spectacular chaotic mess but it seems that it works, woow. I showed my father the part of the sheep head too because just yesterday we talked about as we watched a documentary about Marokko. That he miss that kind of meal he ate there as he visited once, and I never had this and want it too. He really enjoyes your videos when ever I show it to him, thank you for taking us with you ^^/

Brilliant But Blue such a shame right? I guess it’s the same what we call Chinese food in the Netherlands. In fact it is Chinese/Indonesian but they all serve the same dishes that no one outside the NL have ever heard of!
Cosmo Trav: Now you have got my attention.... yes yes yes!! Totally agree with you. My Dads from Noordwijk family still in Etrecht exact same problem on the Indo/Chinese. BTW here in Australia everyone thinks that "Dutch" food is just salted licorice and those small pancake things that lm not going to butcher the name on!!
