  • For more than 40 years, the twin crawler-transporters at NASA's Kennedy Space Center have slowly traveled the gravel track between the massive Vehicle Assembly Building and the two launch pads at Launch Complex 39. These mammoth beasts that first carried all the Apollo Saturn V rockets have since borne every space shuttle on the last Earth-bound leg of their journeys to space.

That thing's speed is off the charts! As in, it can't reach the charts. Still, I've always loved the Crawler, it's just awesome.

I use to work at Patrick AFB in the range safety group for the 45th Space Wing. Myself and 2 other guys built the launch displays for the Flight Control Officers. Right there in the room during liftoff where they could actually blow up the shuttle had it headed inland. Have a pic of me standing beside one of the crawlers. Never forget being a part of the STS team. My grandmother actually baby sat John Glenn when he was a child. Was working at PAFB at the time he went up in STS-95.

My grandfather was a welding engineer at Marion power shovel on this project. Sad to see that it is no longer used after the last space mission.

I little bit of locomotive technology with the Alco prime movers that's still running hard. Even when they showed it on Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe it was sweet.
