    As a soon to be 70 yr old, I truly enjoy your shows! You film the ups and downs of hunting’s successes and defeats in the truest of fashions. UffDa is right...lol. The fact that you value the experience more than the get is really what it is all about! Thanks and keeping my fingers crossed to win a hunt.

    And I commented too early. You're right about. Taking the time to hunt with your son. Ron Jr and I hunted Colorado 3rd rifle last year and we had a great time but didn't score. Ron missed a nice Mule deer buck at around 200 yds, and I passed on a small one. We had a great bonding hunt!

    .shoot a .300 instead of a
    .308 and dont have that much wind drift at 400 yards. You would have killed that elk with a better BC and more speed. This is exactly why I stopped hunting elk with the .308, 20 years ago. I have been using a .300wsm now for 12 years. 165gr TSX barnes @ 3300fps. MPBR is 400 yards. Anything under 500 is a chip shot in wind speeds up to 15mph. I think if you would have waited for a better broad side shot, you would have scored. I too have missed a +390 in late season. Its hunting, thanks for being real. I think your hunts are the best out there !!! What a big bull he would have scored way up there.... Wow !!

      @@Fresh_Tracks Here is my memory moment. I was 16 years old. It was October 4 1980. 7 of us split up and I went up an unsuspecting ridge off an old logging road. I was catching my breath and started making some little grunts like a bull does after the bugle. I hear the the sound of a big animal getting up. Maybe 75 yards the biggest 6 point bull I have ever seen walks up out of the brushy draw to the open hillside in the bright sunshine. I pull my 740 30-06 up and catch him in the scope and pull the trigger before my stock hits my shoulder. He takes off over the hill. I was looking for blood where he was standing and hear 5 shots and then 5 more. I never saw blood or hair, only jagged tracks headed toward the shooting. I look for a couple hours and it started to get dark so I headed back to the pickup. Everyone but Dad was there. A couple hours later a local farmer drives up to where we were. The shots were Dad's. He heard a different bull bugle and put the sneak on him. No snow on the ground so Dad kept putting holes in the big bull until he fell over.When we skinned the bull it had 9 bullets in it with 4 in the head and neck. We did not write down the weight of the quarters but I remember the neck weighed 50 lbs and the hide weighed 82 lbs. (we ran out of pack boards and I carried the hide rolled up in my arms like a baby). We had a hunting partner that hunted the Selway from 1960's on. He said the bull would have been near a thousand pounds live. I close my eyes and can still see the one I missed. But I can walk to my hallway and see the rack off the one Dad killed. RIP Dad I miss you every day.

      +Randy Newberg, Hunter I totally understand and thanks, one of the biggest questions I have to ask is are you gonna try to do some hunts here in Idaho cause that would be awesome there some really great hunts here and I haven't really seen anyone come here to hunt they thinks it's to hard to find anything and film at the same time if you came here you could prove them wrong by hunting here giving and elk or deer or black bear or wolf or Mountain Lion the howa handshake and catch it on film on public land

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  Před 6 lety

      Damn wind is right, but if the shooter (me) fails to hold for the wind, the result is probably the same. Difference in that wind between a 7mm and a .308 is about 3-4", depending on the loads/bullets compared. I would have still missed, or made a marginal hit. Just a big mistake on my part.

    • @shermanl1279
      @shermanl1279 Před 6 lety

  • @APACHE529CREWCHIEF
    @APACHE529CREWCHIEF Před 8 lety +1

    That's why 308 cartridge is outdated and obsolete. Ballistics in so many other cartridges are so much better it makes me wonder why people still use it. Love your show though. You find elk just by looking at maps and finding these areas. Keep up the good work

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  Před 8 lety +4

      The .308 Win is far more capable than I am. If I miss, it is operator error. There are some great cartridges today, but I have had great luck with a .308 Win when I do my ob. Thanks for watching.

    • @WyColoCowboy
      @WyColoCowboy Před 7 lety

      Using a 300 mag with that distance and windage would have changed the bullet path by 2 inches. Still a miss. 308 is a fine cartridge and as Randy said, it was the operator. Shooting in wind is tough, especially when you are sitting in a spot where it feels fairly calm but the bull is out in the wind.

    • @JimmyDevere
      @JimmyDevere Před 6 lety

      Agreed on a different cartridge selection. I've been researching 6.5 CM and the wind deflection for the 6.5 vs. 308 is substantial at longer ranges - not sure at under 400 yards though. N.AZ is notorious windy/gusty and perhaps this shot might have had a different outcome with that cartridge. EDIT: found this link ballistic data. If I'm reading this correctly, at 400 yds. the wind drift difference between the two cartridges (at 20 mph assuming tables are for 10 mph, multiply by 2) would be approx 4-5 inches. Therefor, WITH OPERATOR ERROR it would have likely been a hit. www.lrs-usa.com/2017/04/13/new-shooters-101-caliber-selection/

    Randy, I really love your show and I understand why you shoot a 300 win mag. Howa rifle. Great rifles and a great cartridge. What happened to you on this hunt is exactly why I only shoot over bore cartridges. My Weatherby 30-378 Mark V accumark is dead on at 300 yards if sighted in 1 inch high at 100 yards. I've shot this rifle at 900 yards with a 20 mile per hour cross wind and only had to hold half a mil into the wind. My 25 wssm with 100 grain nosler e-tips 3350 fps at the muzzle is dead on at 340 yards if sighted in 2 inches high at 100 yards. I would suggest switching to factory loaded Nosler long range ammo. Because the ballistic coefficient is so much higher with this ammo it should take a lot of the guess work out of the longer shots. I really appreciate your honesty and integrity in making your shows.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  Před 7 lety +7

      Thanks. I can assure you that many shows would not present the reality of a miss on such a fine bull. But, we are not about creating heroes, rather telling true stories of how it happens.
      Trying to film myself and the complications of that, took my focus off the actual shot. Not a good excuse, but give me that shot 100 times without that complication of self-filming and finding filming lanes through the burnt oaks, and I will make that shot 99 times. Purely operator error that is not a fault of equipment.
      Thanks for watching.
