- When it comes to vintage fashion inspiration, how can you go past someone like Katharine Hepburn, especially when looking for gorgeous vintage trousers?
Join me on my Yesterday-Today sewing adventure as I attempt to make myself a pair of "vintage-y" work trousers, and as a bonus, try to piece the leftover fabric scraps into a matching vest top.

I had a divided skirt that had this kind of closure. It was a great design.
I am sold on it - I now have made a number of skirts that close that way...so sensible plus you get pockets!

Love the 40's style pant pattern and the pocket detail. I saw this treatment on a vintage Weldons pant pattern. I can't imagine not having pockets on pants this is so clever!!! I hate putting in fly front zippers. I'm planning on making some pant and I didn't want the pant legs to tapper. I caught a lot of great tips from your video. Can't wait to get started. Jeans first then casual pants and dress pants after that. I'm very hard to fit off the rack, I'm a bit of a curvey gal.
Curves are difficult with off the rack - I never wore trousers or jeans for years because I could buy them and didn't have time to make them. So best of luck with yours. And yes - this pocket arrangement was something I do because I hate fly fronts and love pockets, so I completely hear you on that :)
If you make another vest and don't have enough fabric, you can make the back in a different fabric such as silk, satin, or rayon .
A lot of mens suit vests are made with a silky like fabric for the back. It usually closely matches the front of the vest.
I love trousers. I want to play around with my pockets next time I sew. I saw another video where they made a pocket closure. Love it.
So enjoyed another of your projects! I also appreciate the challenge of creating something from the leftovers.

The whole ensemble turned out awesome! Very elegant. The pocket is very clever! I've been fussing with a closure in a skirt pocket myself - still WIP. I like the idea of not needing a front or back closure, and of course there must be pockets!
I must admit, I liked the closure method so much, I used it for a skirt I made as well...which come to think of it is still waiting for the video to be compiled!

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Your button opening is such a great idea. I am also in Brisbane and seeing the bars on your window reminds me of my mum’s old house in Enoggera as she had the same ones.
Yeah, it was a thing of the time - I've never known these types anywhere else but in Brisbane.
Those trousers would be ideal for ANZAC day, especially as you're coming into winter.
Much as I like them I'm just too short for trousers but you look great.

Lovely work. Clever pattern alteration, especially the pocket/opening detail. Another possibility for a vest-type top would be to use a contrast fabric (rayon lining fabric or a small print) with a back belt detail, in the style of a man's waistcoat.
I always enjoy your videos; it's good to see another Australian of a certain age who enjoys sewing and isn't afraid to have fun achieving a style that's a bit out of the mainstream.
Great idea with the contrast fabric - I might do that yet - I've got some lovely wool I plan to make into trousers, and it's look great with a man-styled waistcoat.
