Cyclist burns 'Trump won' sign in Raleigh man's yard; Civil lawsuit filed against cyclist

- A Raleigh businessman posted video on Twitter (X) showing a cyclist setting fire to a sign in his yard. Nest video shows a man leaning over the sign, which reads "Trump won," around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 15 with a lighter. The owner of the property on Alleghany Drive is John Kane Jr., a Republican and son of the prominent Triangle-area developer, who ran for chairman of the NCGOP. Kane posted the video and a previous clip that shows the cyclist stopping in front of the sign and kicking it on Aug. 12. Several nights later, Kane's camera captured a bicyclist believed to be the same person burning the sign and moving an American flag out of the way. "The audacity of that is frightening," Kane told WRAL News. "There are lots of signs I see I don’t care for. But I’ve not set one on fire." Kane posted surveillance video from his Nest home camera and wrote, "$1,000 reward for the ID of this arsonist - help me make him a felon."
He later identified the cyclist, adding he has filed a civil lawsuit and will be represented by James R. Lawrence III. In Monday's interview with WRAL News, Kane said he has already replaced the sign, which was spray painted multiple times before it was burned. He said the old sign was burned twice, on Aug. 15 and Aug. 18. According to his campaign website, Kane lives in Raleigh with his wife and three children and graduated from North Carolina State University.

The civil suit is mutually exclusive of any criminal offense, but this burning of a two signs on personal property seems to qualify as a criminal offense. I'm not sure if NC has aggravating factors attached to their statutes, but this being political in nature could make this a higher class felony.

A guy that lives near me put up a sign that said "Don't hit the mailbox." A few days later another sign was nailed to the top of it that said "Stupid A-hole." Then a few days after that he put another sign that said "Or the sign" next to it. Although I didn't think about doing anything to his property I was surprised to see that it stayed up for a few months until he moved as people that intentionally do stuff like that would target that house first I'd think.

A class 3 misdemeanor charge is the only thing James Dennis White received for his arson. He burned the 1st sign - then the replacement sign! One on the 15th, the 2nd on the 18th. This is Arson!
Cyclist's tattoo, his bike app and time stamp on app and John Kane's video put White at the scene 3 times!
