Kotori is a great example of a mapper with a “style”. Every one of his maps focuses on repeated streams, usually the same length, and you really get into a rhythm while playing them. I can’t explain it very well, but it is very easily recognisable

Having a mapping style is like having an art style: it takes years to develop and you're always learning new things
Every now and then when I feel lost I come back to these videos, and they help me regain the control over my path and process of thought. Thank you for these videos, really :)

Do you have any opinions on someone like HW's maps? I really love her maps even though they melt my brain sometimes.
hit or miss for me usually. i like most of his easier maps more than the mlg ones
Smulan HW doesn't have a singular style, all her maps are somewhat different I would say
It's true, but even if most of her maps are very distinctively different they all go towards the "non-standard movements". I haven't played all maps below 4* so I can't say for sure but, I can play 3 seconds of a map and more often than not I know it's hers.
she basically tries to bring out a different kind of readability and flow in her maps which i personally enjoy, her flow on the expert diff of Nanatsu was one of the godliest i've played, sometimes it gets ridiculous tho, like sentimental skyscraper, personally i didn't like that one but that's just my opinion
I liked skyscraper, probably because it's the only hard one I can pass lol, it doesn't feel all that confusing to read compared to the other ones.
Expert Nanatsu is Godly, probably one of my favourite maps in general. Feels very balanced.
Least favourite for me is Deconstruction star. Just feels messy.

Tatsuo I will upload my beatmaps to receive feedback of course, but I hate it when people tell you whats right and whats wrong. I am open minded for feedback, but when people tell you that what you do is wrong and only theirs is good it pisses me off and thats not what I want if you understand what I mean. I wanna keep my spirit :/
Seems a bit contradictory, feedback is bound to be a bit more subjective than you'd like it to. However, experienced mappers have seen and interacted with a variety of styles, concepts, and ideas through mapping and modding, so naturally, they will have more experience, and I wouldn't expect them to act as if everything else is wrong and only they are correct. If you can get over that slap to the face that your mapping is faulty in many areas, you can improve a lot faster by building on that feedback :)

RLC's Pretender is a perfect example for someone who is new to mapping and still got an even influential style. It was his first ranked map and it got voted the best map of 2013 and for me it is still one of the best maps out there. But when the map got ranked, he never perticipated in other ranked maps, had several unraked maps (i am not quite sure though) but no other mapping experience that i would know of. And still his new ideas and his own style influenced many new maps. I think modders shouldnt "destroy" a map but help the mapper to find what he really intended to do and help him express this.
i don't know much about rlc's maps before pretender, so i can't say if you're right or not. if he really did have his own style from the beginning though, i'd say he's an outlier when compared to the majority of new mappers
Yes now I am sure. Pretender was his first beatmap he uploaded. And I think my last sentence even applies if he is an outlier. we should try to get new mappers to fully use their new ideas so maybe we get more interesting game elements

It's probably better to ask him directly about it, but from what I remember I think Charles445 was helping him out in the beginning with mapping.

Didn't know mapping is competitive, probably TOO competitive.
Considering anyone who plays osu can map, it's only expected that mapping is _that_ competitive. As pishi has said, many mappers in deetz's situation would have quitted, but deetz was just persistent and worked hard to become a sufficiently good mapper. That's really all you need to be successful in mapping and in general.

I think I just gave up mapping O-o. I dont often have accses to a computer (or even then a chance to use the game), and clearly this is too much of a time investment for me. It apparently requires a ton of forum posting, studing other's maps, and then such. I know none of these people nor will I so I think you've just killed my hopes to mapping. I don't know why I am commenting to be honest. Oh well, I'll still like the video to leave something for you.

Mapping in osu! rly sucks. It rly hurts when you put so many hours to make a map, express your ideas and you did it without breaking ranking criterias. Then you HAVE TO search for people who will remap your map into different way, almost destroy your map, change every pattern (or in the worst scenario they tell you that you suck and stop mapping) JUST TO leave it in graveyard and it wont be ranked. Sad story, "loved" maps try to fix it, by "ranking" maps that wont have to be modded but still, many good maps are graveyarded bcs of this "modding" requirement.
It's not that easy, every player love my map but every mapper hates it even if it meets ranked criteria and what to do in this case ?

Yoges Singha i know but I have eyes and if I look at my map was first uploaded and then look at my map after 8mods it looks completely different and the newest one isn't a map I visualised after hearing the song for the first time in my mind
