    This video is dedicated to Dawn Brancheau an experienced female trainer who, on February 24, 2010, drowned at SeaWorld Orlando by the orca "Tilikum". Following this event, trainers no longer go into the water with the orcas at SeaWorld parks shows. Tilikum was the subject of the controversial film Blackfish. #Blackfish.

    I often think about Shamu, Corky and Lolita. Shamu was a Southern Resident from J pod. She was captured in 1965 in Puget Sound, Washington. Her mother was harpooned and killed in front of her. Shamu died in 1975 at SeaWorld San Diego.
    Corky is the oldest orca in captivity. She was captured in 1969 in Pender Harbour, British Columbia. She is from the A5 pod, A23 matriline. Her mother was A23 Stripe. Corky still has family in the wild - sister Ripple, brother Fife, niece Midsummer, great-nephews Fern and Ne'nakw, and great-niece Eliot. Corky lives at SW San Diego.
    Lolita was captured in 1970 in Puget Sound, Washington. She is a Southern Resident and member of the L pod. Her mother is L25 Ocean Sun (estimated to be 93 years old). Lolita lives in the smallest orca tank in the world at the Miami Seaquarium.

And let’s let them survive on their own WITHOUT a pod to help them so they can be alone and scared for the rest of their lives in the wild, orcas are VERY social animals. In a lot of countries circuses are banned from using animals and so should aqua parks like sea world. “These animals inspire millions of people” that’s because these animals have no choice!! Yes, The orca's have killed people at SeaWorld because how stressed they were it's not there fault. Orca's don't kill people in the wild. I think you should watch blackfish because that answer what you said is wrong. Manny Calavera This show reminded me why I love these animals and SeaWorld. Blackfish is completely propaganda. It is in fact 85% lies. Most of the "trainers" never even worked at SeaWorld in fact one of the trainers that actually worked at SeaWorld got demoted for kicking an otter. The documentary was made so biased to make it more successful. Dorsal fin collapse is not un healthy for the orcas, it is mainly due to the fact they spend more time up at the surface with their trainers and as there are no bones in the dorsal it droops. It doesn't hurt the orcas in anyway. Orcas are very intelligent animals so they receive lots of different forms of enrichment everyday learning new behaviors for shows is actually very mentally stimulating for them. Also they are not forced to perform. If the orca does not want to do a trick it doesn't do it and that's fine. I've got lots of video evidence of the orcas refusing tricks and the trainers just move on. They are not starved either they are fed three times a day and the food in shows is sort if like an extra treat for them. SeaWorld has not collected orcas from the wild for over 47 years and most of the orcas are still with there mothers. The scene in blackfish where the mother "cries" when her baby is taken away is fake. Katina was opening her mouth on command of a trainer and blackfish added the sounds in. Did you know SeaWorld rescues over 35,000 animals every year including 400 whales and dolphins. These animals are great ambassadors to their species scientists study them each and every day to help save those in the wild. In the wild populations of orcas are near to extinction because of pollution, overfishing, boat traffic ect. They are the orcas we should be worrying about not these well fed orcas in filtered saltwater. It is such a shame to see the company that inspired so many of us to love these beautiful mammals slowly shut down. Hope this cleared a few things up. Sea world has helped manny marine animals and has actually realsed them. I wouldn't be saying all this if it wasn't true. Orcas live in pods and never leave their family unit. This business is heartbreaking and tragic. It should be illegal to keep these beautiful and intelligent animals in captivities. Depriving them of food so they will entertain us. If you want to be entertained by these beautiful animals, then take a boat out into the ocean and watch them in their natural environment, in family pods. In this video, you don't get to see them take their babies away from its mother, to be sold to another park for profit. The mother having a nervous breakdown and crying out for her baby. Or the baby crying for its mother. They keep all of that fun for after hours, when the park is closed. Please do not buy a ticket to these parks and encourage this industry to exist….. Have mercy and be a voice for these wonderful animals.

      You’re the type of person to see a seal clap it’s hands and be in awe and giggle. Then five minutes later see an orca breach in the water and go on a rant about how it’s a prison sentence and how cruel it is.... zoos & aquarium zoos are needed to teach/give people the chance to meet animals they will never get the chance to meet.
      Wild animals in captivity = less people going to the wild to see them and possibly disturb their way of life. These animals are used to this life, most being born in captivity.

      the fin being flopped over is not a sign of depression, but it is a common mistake to make, as it is what we used to believe. we've discovered that it is because when a whale spends large amounts of time at the surface of the water, or an area with low currents, with fin has no support so droops. i hope this helped you! :)

      That's the point - they are never able to swim where they were designed to swim... Being stuck at the surface in a small space, not experiencing those depths or currents, is the same as putting them in jail with strangers when they are tight knit, strong families in the wild.

    • @caitlynkelly8859
      @caitlynkelly8859 Před 6 lety +4

      i agree on most of what you said. I don't think 'jail' is the appropriate term for SeaWorld. other companies, yes. SeaWorld, not now. the tanks are small, yes. but they get healthcare and food. I don't agree with Captivity in most cases, but None of SeaWorld's orcas can be released, and it's the best facility in the world. so they can't really go anywhere else without being in a worse spot then they are now. and the SeaWorld 'pods' have become tight knit family groups SeaWorld Orlando, for example. Katina, the matriarch is one of the 3 wild caught orcas left in Seaworlds parks. she is the mother of Nalani and Makaio. Tilikum who used to be the 'bull' of the pod, fathered Makaio, Malia and was a grandfather (but acted like a father) to Trua. Kayla sometimes acts as a surrogate mother to Trua. it's a bit of a twisted pod, but they all acted like most pods would out in the wild. the San Anonio pod is pretty much a tiny wild pod, just in captivity. Takara, the matriarch, is mother to Sakari and Kamea. the other two males, Tuar and Kyuquot and brother and very close. most of SeaWorlds whales don't know what the ocean is.

    I grew up 30 minutes or so from the now closed Sea World of Ohio. I had the opportunity to go every year or so growing up. I learned to love and respect these smart and amazing animals. The problem is such a complex one with no easy or simply solution. To all of those who say we need to boycott Sea World, I have to say that essentially cuts the funding to the orcas. Like it or not it's true. Most of the orcas in captivity now were born in captivity and as sad as it is don't know any difference. Cutting the shows also cuts off a big portion of the mental stimulation. So... Getting rid of the shows doesn't fix anything. It makes someone somewhere feel better about themselves. If it were not for Sea World a lot less people would be aware of this amazing animal. I have since been able to see them free in the Pacific Ocean and was amazed all over again. I feel Sea World decision to stop breeding the animals was a good one. As for what to do with all of the orcas in captivity I'm not sure of the right, best or even a good answer is. I just want the best for them. Some of the ideas I heard are just ignorant. I do know there is no simply or easy answer to fix the problem.

They have tons of cash...by not going to SW it's not going to hurt the whales, but it will hurt SW's bottom line. I'm so glad they have ended the breeding program too, but I don't trust them and I bet they are trying to figure something else out that...I don't know what that thing is, but it will be for the benefit of SW not the orcas. There have been some crazy ideas, but also some good ones that I think are workable and SW could still even make money, just not as much as they used to.

    I know that there is an argument for Orcas whether they were captured and they are happy with this lifestyle or not , but I feel they are happy with this life, they feel love from people and their trainers and they feel that they are flattered, I'm sure the trainers try to make them feel relieved and feel their love for them . If Orcas died fast in this lifestyle , that doesn't mean that they got depressed but that means trainers didn't care for them well and didn't make them feel their love. Imagine that you live a very simple life in a small village but their people love you and very nice to you , believe me you won't want to leave them and live in a big city where no one takes care of you

      Grace Hughes This show reminded me why I love these animals and SeaWorld. It happens to killer whales that stay on the surface frequently, which does happen in human care, however there is an excellent NatGeo documentary on Netflix about Orcas out in the ocean (I think it was around Washington, but I can't remember) and the male killer whales out there also had it. They even described the whale as the "bull killer whale with the flopped over dorsal fin."

    Ahem* some things about orcas in captivity (I’ve done a school project on this u. u)
    1. They live only about 14 years in captivity- in the wild they usually live to about 60 years
    2. The tanks are WAY too small
    3. They’re all alone- orcas are one of the most social animals in the ocean
    4. Clasped dorsal fins! These are a sign of unhealthy orcas and is not common in the wild, but common in captivity
    5. There has never been any recorded orca fatalities in the wild, although in 2013 (I think) there were 4 deaths in captivity. Three of which are done by tilikum.

Well, we all know how this would end, even if an actual escape from the prison is as impossible as it is for the orcas from "seaworld", it won´t take long before the first janitor get´s killed, i would be highly suprised if it take more than a month..
      This makes me wonder why Orcas stay so peaceful confronted with such a maltreatment... Rationality? Forethought? better social-skills`?

      GachaGirl507 Tilly didn’t kill Keltie Burns, the other orcas, Haida and Nootka, killed her.
      The tanks are huge, in Orlando, the tank is 7 million gallons for Nalani, Katina, Malia, Trua, and Makaio. Orcas don’t swim hundreds of miles everyday, and if they do, it’s for food.
      Orcas live longer in captivity.
      The orcas are never alone, they are always kept in “groups” for example: Amaya, Ulises, and Kalia
      Even Tilikum, who was usually kept with Taima or Trua.

    I really wish people would do there research. How many of you have paid to go to a petting zoo, a city zoo anything along the lines where they have animals in cages or habitats of some sort. What happened with the trainer Dawn was a an absolute tragedy, may she rest in peace.I am a firm believer that the individuals that get into this line of work know what these animals are capable of. I have always had the utmost respect for anyone who gets in this type of work. To anyone that currently works or has worked at SeaWorld what you guys do is extremely dangerous and very rewarding at the same time. I know you guys treat your animals with respect and love.
    Anyway, Do any of you know with absolute certainty, when the last time an orca, killer whale, was taken out of the wild and taken to sea world? Tilikum, the whale that everyone is talking about, was taken out of the wild in 1983. The laws and requirements have changed significantly in the the past 20+ years. I don't know this for a fact, but from what I have found he was the last whale that they have from the wild. With that being said the other whales that were born in captivity, how would releasing them into the wild be responsible when they may not be able to survive in wild at all?
    Remember for those of you who still have to argue that the animals shouldn't live in captivity. We have learned an astounding amount of information from the zoo's, animal wildlife exhibits and yes SeaWorld. No one is arguing against places like Busch Gardens and city zoo's, remember to fight for all sides not just the side that is most convenient for you.
    If these places are going to exist, which they always are, I am happy to have it be a place like SeaWorld.

      "Do any of you know with absolute certainty, when the last time an orca, killer whale, was taken out of the wild and taken to sea world?"
      Doesn't change the fact that they still rape the ones already there with false insemination, along with plenty of inbreeding, which very few even survive into adulthood at all if they're not already stillborn. The fact that those past wrongs are now outlawed does NOT change the wrongs they still proceed to do.

    • @monsterhighrocks896
      @monsterhighrocks896 Před 9 lety

      I agree 100% with your first paragraph. The second paragraph although a good point needs to be researched a little more. The trainers at Seaworld know what the animals are capable of. They don't just walk into seaworld and get the job. Animal trainers go through college, must have previous experience with animals, initial tests and training, and so much more. They KNOW it's dangerous but it's a passion of theirs and their dream job. I know, even after the supposedly 100% true movie "Blackfish", I want to work at Seaworld as an animal trainer.

    I am so sad. My heart hurts for those poor animals. Let them go home. What if they kept you in an empty box in the bottom of the ocean to run around and do tricks with your opposable thumbs several times a day, every day, get food when you are deserving, and then put you in a cell for the rest of the time. There is no way home. No way to escape. This is disgusting.

    It's so sad to see that their fin is bent over.. Because the killer whales in the wild have straight ones because they are constantly swimming and it keeps their fin healthy( learned from the movie blackfish) and theirs is flopped over because they are kept in captivity and they don't swim that much. :(

    • @CosbyTheCaterpillar
      @CosbyTheCaterpillar Před 10 lety +2

      Not all captive killer whales have bent fins. Corky II at Seaworld San Diego has a completely straight one and she's lived there for who knows how long (and yes is still alive today)

    People in favor of SeaWorld and argue and argue and argue that it's right all they want, but that does not change the fact that if these whales were not in captivity, Keltie Byrne, Daniel Dukes, Alexis Martinez, and Dawn Brancheau would still be alive. John Hargrove would not have broken/fractured nearly every bone in his body. Multiple trainers would not be paralyzed for life. After seeing the gruesome results of trying to keep these whales as pets, who can argue it was a good idea?
