  • In this inspiring journey Nouman Ali Khan shares his incredible path to learning Arabic. In a captivating recount of his early days, he reflects on the challenges faced while pursuing knowledge. From struggling to afford rent in New York to working full-time, attending college, and dreaming of learning Arabic, Nouman's determination shines through. Unable to join a prestigious Arabic course, he takes matters into his own hands, attending a three-week class and then independently studying from used books.
The narrative unfolds as Nouman details his relentless pursuit, taking multiple trains and a bus to ask questions from Arab friends and gradually progressing through various Arabic books. The journey involves sacrifices and a thirst for knowledge that fuels late-night studies and self-discipline. What sets this story apart is Nouman's dedication to creating a curriculum for future learners, paving the way for them to navigate the intricate world of Arabic and the Quran. His tale is a testament to the power of relentless determination and passion for seeking direct access to God's speech.
As Nouman shares his insights, he emphasizes the importance of genuine thirst for knowledge, urging aspiring learners not to embark on studying Arabic until their yearning becomes uncomfortable. He challenges the convenience-seeking mindset, encouraging a commitment to the journey, even if it means unconventional methods.

I could not bring myself to even memorize the alif baa. I don’t know if I was lazy or what but I had all kinds of cassettes and books. And yes I hit the lecture circuit hard! Not missing anything that came through my city. ….out of nowhere I had two brain aneurysms, one on each side of my brain. I could not write, talk or walk for months. I heard a neurologist talking on TV about brain plasticity. It set a fire in my soul because he said he used Urdu to stimulate a young girls brain. She, like me had absolutely no knowledge of that language. I figured if he could do that with Urdu, maybe I can try that with with Arabic. I’m really fighting back tears trying to write this. Subhannallah. Since I was stuck at home and I literally could not do anything else. I got in those books and started learning how to read and write. I was so determined that I actually gained more and more confidence. My Arabic writing improved over my English because I had not been practicing English. I still cried a lot because I spoke with a slur after my stroke. But through time and determination everything improved. This video made me cry because it took me back to a time when I had given up on myself. I never thought I could learn Arabic and I never thought I could survive two Brain strokes and be riding my bike and climbing mountains again. This video was very emotional for me. The Quran is worth every single effort we put into it! Every. Single. Effort!!!
