As you point out, it all really depends on your goals and interests. Here in the European Union German is a dominant language if you consider that approx. 92 million speak it, for a global UE population of 447 million. French is spoken by approx. 73 million people in France and Belgium. Not to mention tri-lingual Luxembourg with French and German as well as Luxembourgish (an interesting Germanic idiom with some French downloads). However, outside the EU French is more an international language than German. Which one is easier? Quite frankly neither are easy languages - not as simple as English at least. FYI, I live in a French-speaking town in Eastern Belgium with the German border less than 30 kms away from home (and Luxembourg less than 20 kms) , so I'm commonly exposed to both languages; French is my native and usual language but I also speak decent German.

The people I would want to talk to in French already speak English. The places where I would encounter non English speakers who speak French, well they’re places I generally would not want to be. So it really comes down to which language will allow me to understand a higher percentage of the other.
Think of it like choosing to learn BJJ or wrestling first. Which skill can I develop adequately that will allow me to show up to my first practice and appear to have been there for a few months.
(Fluent in English)+(As literate as a 10 year old in French)=(can handle what % of simple interactions with a polite person who solely speaks German)
(Fluent in English)+(As literate as a 10 year old in German)=(can handle what % of simple interactions with a polite person who solely speaks French)
In California, I talk to residents every day who tell me they can’t speak English. I simply refuse to believe a moderately dumb person could live in a country and not pick up the language to a functional extent. I always say the same thing, “Your family member who makes fun of you for saying ‘hello’ wrong, they are wrong and they are jerks. Do you understand this? ‘Jollla Kāmo estēs?’” I always get the same response, “Bien, I understand. My child/cousin is a jerk. They pulls on my arm whenever I speak English, then tell me how I mispronounced everything.” I point out how Buenos Aires, Tijuana, and Barcelona don’t agree on how to pronounce words in Spanish, and the same is true for English. 50% of the time they have a full vocabulary. I only trust visibly developmentally disabled residents to not speak English. everyone else just needs the encouragement of telling them "the nēēn-yos are wrong too."

I would have to say it depends. People may learn a language for the purpose of interest, family reasons or being active in a region or community. German is a strong language within Europe, given the fact that it's one of the most spoken languages in the EU, as well as Germany having one of the largest economies yet. However, you will only find the language popular mostly within Europe, considering the fact that most of the German speaking population lives in Europe. Outside of Europe, there are only very small communities active, which aren't that common at all unlike French or Spanish. In fact, French is highly in demand these days, given that it's one of the official languages of the United Nations and the fact that the number of speakers are widespread. Plus, a lot of social science areas have a focus in French.

I am a Computational Linguistics student and I has been given a choice to learn German or French as a foreign language at my university. I'm struggling because both languages have benefits for me. German is a bit easy because it's quite close to English (Germanic languages) and it has a lot of researches in my professional field. On the other hand, French is a Romance language which means that it will be close to Latin and Spanish that I'm currently learning. It's just so hard to decide as they both have benefits and drawbacks for me and I literally have no plans where to live after graduation.
Could someone give me some advice? T¬T

Only until you complete the B2-level Spanish should you not think of learning French. Learning two closely related languages at the same time won't give you an edge; instead it'll ruin your competence in both languages because of constant mixing up.

The choice of which language to learn, whether French or German, depends on various factors such as personal interests, career goals, and travel plans. Here are some factors to consider:
Personal Interests: If you are interested in literature, art, fashion, and culture, you may want to consider learning French. French is known as the language of love and is widely spoken in various parts of the world, especially in Europe and Africa. On the other hand, if you are interested in engineering, science, and technology, you may want to consider learning German, as it is known for its precision and efficiency in these fields.
Career Goals: If you are planning to work in an international organization, both French and German can be useful languages to learn. French is an official language of the United Nations, UNESCO, and other international organizations, while German is widely spoken in the European Union and is the most commonly spoken language in Europe.
Travel Plans: If you plan to travel to France, Belgium, Switzerland, or Canada, learning French can be a significant advantage, as it will help you communicate with locals and better understand the culture. Similarly, if you plan to travel to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, learning German can be beneficial, as it will help you navigate your way around and appreciate the local culture.
In conclusion, the decision of whether to learn French or German depends on your personal interests, career goals, and travel plans. Both languages have their advantages and can be useful depending on your circumstances. Ultimately, you should choose the language that you are most interested in and motivated to learn, as this will make the learning process more enjoyable and effective
