I am a Computational Linguistics student and I has been given a choice to learn German or French as a foreign language at my university. I'm struggling because both languages have benefits for me. German is a bit easy because it's quite close to English (Germanic languages) and it has a lot of researches in my professional field. Only until you complete the B2-level Spanish should you not think of learning French. Learning two closely related languages at the same time won't give you an edge; instead it'll ruin your competence in both languages because of constant mixing up.
