  • This video will show you how to replace the backup (reverse) tail lights in the 2017 Suburban. This applies to all Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles from 2015 to 2020. The replacement involves an upgrade to LED bulbs. Our top two choices for LED backup lights (for this vehicle) are discussed.

A few things to note when purchasing LED bulbs:
    1) When purchasing LEDs, don't be fooled by the number of LEDs on the bulb. More LEDs does not necessarily mean brighter, it depends on the specific LED used in the bulb. LED chips (the individual LEDs in any bulb) come in a huge variations of brightness, light color and size.
    2) Don't be fooled by the size of the bulb. A bigger bulb does not necessarily mean a brighter bulb.
    3) Be careful of lumen (brightness) ratings. Some sellers provide a total number of lumens for all bulbs in the package, not for each bulb.
    4) Some sellers/manufacturers don't provide accurate numbers for lumens.
    5) The bulb size, orientation of LEDs on the bulb, light output characteristics of the LEDs used on the bulb and the vehicle bulb housing (reflector, bezel, position of bulb in the reflector, etc.) may all affect your perceived bulb brightness. So while one bulb may indeed have more lumen output than another bulb, the brighter bulb may not appear to be the brightest solution for your application.
    6) Some LED bulbs last for many years while some fail very quickly. With so many bulbs on the market, there are a number of manufactures of LED chips that make inferior products. There are also some bulb manufacturers that use substandard designs or components for the bulbs. A common area of failure is the driver circuit for the LED chips. While product reviews can be very subjective, be wary of bulbs that don't have many reviews or that have a significant number of negative reviews (especially reviews that describe bulb failures).
    SUPER BRIGHT 921 PIGTAIL LED
Here's where we purchased our super bright pigtail 921 LED. They are available from other Ebay sellers as well (search on "auxito 921backup" and look for the picture that matches what we used in our video):

You can also find the super bright pigtail 921 LED on Amazon:

    STANDARD FIT 921 LED
The standard fit bulb that we purchased and highlighted in this review has lasted for 4+ years in several vehicles that we fitted. However, it is sold out from the seller that we obtained them from. They only have color versions at the time of this posting:

You can also search Ebay for "50W 921 cree" and you can find similar bulbs.
This looks like it may be a comparable bulb from Amazon:

Hi Brian. Excellent videos! Meep up the great work!!
I just installed Beamtech’s non-pigtail LED bulbs in my 2017 Suburban, both H and L beams, and am happy with the results so far.
With my aging eyesight I am going to install LED bulbs in the back-up lights.
While I generally would think that ‘brighter is better’ in this application, I am concerned that the super-bright LED bulb that you installed in this video would actually “wash out” a clear crisp picture crom the back-up camera.
Can you please comment on this concern?
Maybe the less-bright bulb would be better if there is wash-out from the brighter bulb.
    Thank you!
    Rob

You do have to give it a little twist like all the bulbs. I almost broke mine trying to push it straight in.

great info... what are good led for license plate ?

There are so many options for license plate lights and many are garbage. They don't last long, they flicker, etc. We found one that has worked for over two years now, but we swapped them so many times that we lost documentation on what it was. I will see if I can take the bulb out and identify where it came from.

great video, do you have any recommendations for low and high beam LEDs? thanks!

Yes, I’m close to posting a video on this. We have had very good luck with Beamtech bulbs. Search for B089SQVZD1. No fans, no external control modules, bright and white with no failures for more than a year now (on several vehicles) and all for about $30 a pair. You pay this much for a good set of halogen bulbs. Subscribe to this channel and click the bell icon or just be on the lookout for the video.

There’s a lot of videos out there for the low beams and it’s pretty simple. I haven’t found any on the high beams but pretty much the same thing they’re just a little farther down and I had to move the metal bracket underneath my air filter which was just 4 screws to get to the high beam on the passenger side. Thinking about making a video on the high beams myself lol
