In this video I show you my tricks to speed painting an army to get it ready for the table FAST! I'm showing it on my Craftworld Aeldari (will always be Eldar to me lol) army but the principles apply to any army.

5:33 I'm very much in agreement here. I will nearly always lay down all my (boring) base colours first just because the results following the washes and highlights are far more rewarding. Great job on getting these guys painted up, I really need more motivation to build and paint up some armies.
Thanks Pete! Some evenings i like to take a previously basecoated mini and start highlighting it up to a high level, its much easier to get into than starting from scratch
The idea of just painting the main 3 colors and then going back later to work on details really makes painting that army I've been putting off for months more palatable.
How did it go?
Drybrushing biel tan is chad level. Great techniques and smooth looking eldar
😎
Love that sword technique, I'm going to try that Eric. Thanks.
Give it a try! Its surprisingly easy
I love building, buying and playing with a painted force, but i hate painting. This video is EXACTLY what i needed! Most of what you did is what i do, but i never thought to try that NNM blade technique before, thanks for the great vid man!
Glad you liked it Phil! I never even considered my power sword technique to be NMM but i suppose it is…great way to tackle intimidating techniques - do them by accident lol
Man, not sure how long you've been in the hobby, but I was just like you: I just wanted to get my units painted as fast as possible, as time went on I realized that painting is a hobby in itself, and started enjoying it A LOT, it is sooo relaxing.
Tip: if you like painting them assembly line, stop and try to paint them one by one, completely, I find assembly line painting veeeeery frustrating because you spend a ton of time without proper gratification because you aren't finishing anything, just parts of things, and it will soon feel like an endless chore. Painting 1 by 1 you will feel great "yeaaaah look at this guy, I will paint another one right away"
@@pedrobastos8132 i never liked painting my orks but i got custodes a few months back and after painting my first guard, ive fallen in love with painting them, i still dont like painting orks or space marines so my friends are painting them for me lol, but it could also be just what army he is painting too yknow
@@dewseff8492 yeah, that's also a thing, if you really like the models you end up enjoying the painting a lot more. I have two Grimdark Future armies: Orks and Dwarves/Squats/whatever, and while I did enjoy painting my squats I do have to say that I liked painting my Orks way more, I guess I just like them a bit more.
@@pedrobastos8132 i woulda liked painting my orks more if it didnt feel so overwhelming, like i have so much ork stuff to paint its hard to care about each model, but with custodes i feel like each one since its such an elite army is worth the time and effort
These last two videos have been some of the most banger
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed em
I hate you a little bit because this is exactly the video I have wanted to make because I think it's super important to just have those practical tips around big colours, simply drybrushing and yeah, the distraction element to just get something on the table in a few hours per unit, rather than the focus on how do I do all these massive techniques that are easy to get sucked into on youtube. Having just done this this weekend painting some second hand models to build a new craftworld contingent, it's super timely someone is documenting this. Thank you sir, and loved the earlier video on making Eldar terrain too. We need more of these on doing standard army sets for everyone with a big pile of shame (need to work on drukhari and some new harlequins myself).
That was interesting, and the minis look very cool. The point about "Table Top Quality" is well made. I feel that things like Instagram, with virtuoso paint jobs shot in extreme close up, give a skewed impression of what a decently painted mini needs to look like. And never go full Reverse Cow; no one goes full Reverse Cow.
Another tip for those afraid to use the sharp edge of their xacto knife to trim the mold lines (or have accidentally chunked it for lack of delicate hands): flip it around and use the back edge. Works great as a mold line remover.
I really needed that first tip. Being able to split my time from getting it to TTQ and then practice and refine what I want is a huge boon. Thank you!
Thank you so much for that tutorial on the wraithlord sword! Painted up my first ever power sword that wasn't just flat silver and it turned out so much better! Never thought I'd be able to do that at my level of painting. THANK YOU!
11:34 - Thank you for going over this so a smoothbrain like me can understand. This is going to make swords nice and quick.
Would love to see an expansion on the eldar terrain. Your vid making that is one of my favourite terrain builds on CZcams.
Dude, ikr!? I never see anyone else touch Eldar terrain. I still go back and watch that one often. It's so satisfying and a really cool build. Still haven't copied it yet, but I keep telling myself I will eventually.
This was a fantastic watch
Reverse cow blending is my favorite painting technique. It's a shame to see it so rarely used, everybody seems to have moved to doggy highlighting nowadays.
lmao
Your tabletop ready is quite good, haha!
Eric you are my hobby hero! I have a little time tonight to work on my army/terrain and came to your channel to watch some 'making cool necromunda terrain from everything' and here i am getting some 'get yer army on the table me boyo' as a bonus. Thanks for sharing = you rock!
Damn, that singular comment about technicality and practice is spot on. Technical information is great, but it just doesn't have a foundation to stand on if you don't practice and experiment to figure it out.
I would never in my mind "speed paint" these.
I love taking my time and just enjoy it.
To each their own! I have so many minis that if i ever want to see them on the table i need to paint some of them quickly. Plus, speed painting the first few coats motivates me to paint HQ models at a higher level
Your descriptions of various painting qualities/grades is exceedingly helpful. You have clearly defined them in terms I can wrap my head around thank you!
Great video! The difference distance at 4:17 makes is unbelievable...never saw it from that perspective before! Have a great eve!
I'm impressed by the very well done paint job. I wished I had known these skills when I was younger. I used the "one thick coat" trick,
Didn’t we all haha
Love your videos man. You've completely inspired me to start with some terrain and structure builds for a mordheim kinda setting, and you've taught me so much
Right on- I was hoping you'd be putting out a painting tutorial at some point, and here we are. Fantastic results, as well; those minis really look nice up against that terrain. Thanks for taking the time, and have a great weekend.
I really like this, and as someone who’s going to do and Aeldari army this fits nicely. I’m also going to start using the TTQ and TTQ+ with my painting and to help my sister as she starts her journey😅 sorry it’s a good system to follow
I cant beleive how that edge highlight makes that sword look way better than it should be, thats crazy. Nice tip
Nice video as always, and not that long after they came out!
TTQ - + is my favorite quality rating.
This may be your most informative video yet. These are great techniques that are highly approachable. So glad I watched this.
I really enjoyed this video Eric! I'll definitely be using some of these tips on my Bretonnian army for Adepticon!
Hoping to see more Eldar stuff from you! This and the Eldar terrain video are really good
love this video, nice an simple. its makes painting less intimidating. its a breathe of fresh air.
Love all your videos, especially with these hot jams, man. The music is A+.
You really need to do more videos like this! Amazing !
I appreciate you mentioning the table top quality milestone, I often get stressed out about painting because I feel like I need to be putting on 8 different colors before I can start playing with my minis. But getting the main 3 honestly does look just as good when I’m playing and just looking at them from a distance
Exactly what I do my man. Love it.
I followed your advice and finally finished three Rock Trolls. They'd been 95% done in my pile forever! finishing the base and a little drybrushing on the raised details did the trick. If I am ever without new project ideas (never will happen) I can go back and go nutso details on them.
nice one eric! great vid
Awesome video man, This gives me some great encouragement to bring this technique to my custodes!
Love your videos!
This is great! I'll have to use some of this philosophy on my burgeoning eldar collection!
Woah, that's way more effective than I imagined. Right now i mostly paint for pleasure and don't have people to play with, but good tips for prepping some of my OPR minis soon
Great video!
Drybrushing really is the greatest technique of them all. Excellent video, as always!
what a master balance of techniques! a really ejoyable video!!
As someone who can be a bit if a perfectionist just doing the three main basecoats and then moving on seems like such a good idea as to not get stuck on a model.
Eric you have been killing it recently. Another great video. Just wish orks were this quick to paint !
Orks are even quicker to paint! Looking sloppy and dirty is very on- brand for them!
Damn, that biel-tan green looks amazing for such a small time investment! I am beginning to collect eldar but am still on the edge if I want them ulthwe or biel-tan, that might just have tipped the balance!
Great video, and even better thumbnail.
BEST video about mini painting ive ever seen
Love the video! I assemble minis in much the same way, but I use a cupcake pan to keep the piles for each model separate.
I did the sword trick, and the first comment when I showed him the finished model was "man that blade is amazing!" thanks you!
This is a Grade A video! Very helpful to reset my mindset. Thank you!
This is wonderful! There are so many great resources on CZcams for taking your painting to the next level, but it's rare to find a video that says it's perfectly ok to just get a few colors on there decently cleanly and go from there.
Also airbrushes are your friend. Yes they're ~250-300 for everything (compressor, airbrush, ventilator, thinner, etc.) But that's less than most armies and will serve you well for many many years. I waited four years to get one and really should have saved up a bit and done it after the first year.
top tips mate nice one
great video !
A first starting 1999 me would have loved this. I love it too but to a beginner this is an important lesson. Well done sir
8:00 speed painting being better than your hard determined minis from yester-year… tooooo true!!
Great post... seeing the basics...
Smart basics... is a great help ... my boys are transitioning from DnD to to. 40 K , where large armies are a necessity. Thank you.
This is very helpful and now I also use a texture paint for the bases and it still looks sick
Thank you Eric, great video! Your tips are extremely helpful. I am excited to give this a try. I want to re-paint Zombicide Black Plague.
love the sword effect, so simple
Subscribed! Great video to get people painting!
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how to paint good looking armies at a decent pace. Excellent video showing the core techniques that most players should employ to get to the game fast. *applause*
a lot of the techniques you used in this are actually what i use, dry brush highlighting gives it a sort of cartoon vibe to them and looks like a simplified version of cel shade
Bro, I need a table chart of Eric's tt quality/standards like yesterday! With multiple visual references, on my table while I paint 😆
love it man👍
“Painted poorly by the previous owner” yes but the previous owner is me 15 years ago lol
Love this video, very inspiring to see how great the outcome looks.
that blade looks sick, now i finally know how to paint a power sword in a way that looks cool and doesn't require a phd in miniature painting, thanks! :D
Eldar ! Awesome
Please show the whole army done like this ! So motivating to bring back to life my old eldar army !!!
Woah You did NMM really quickly! I gonna try that method for my DnD knight
That is a great base for really nice nmm, good luck!
I love your paint job quality level ranking system and vocabulary.
Anyone that wants a wonderful, cost effective dark yellow color to start with try Vallejo dark flesh. Goes on smooth as silk and covers fantastic, even over black. Really nice for those yellow and black hazard stripes GW likes to use as well!
Available at Hobby Lobby as well.
Great vid, I appreciate the breakdown of some very eye catching effects. I especially like the baby noises in the back of the sponsor spot :D
😳 I didn’t notice haha but yes hes a noisy little guy sometimes haha
@@EricsHobbyWorkshop it's only audible with headphones on afaict. Very cute regardless!
Really unusually technic of drawing sword! Its a pretty cool!
Thumbs up to all of this - Painting an army is a different goal requiring different techniques than painting one individual showcase model. The next level up in distraction is to paint grunts or back rows of formations less detailed than leaders or the front rank.
I have not yet had the chance to paint even a squad. I only had to paint solitary minis so far, glad to know I will be able to get good looking bands fast when I eventually get one.
Thanks for the inspiration. I really really have to adopt this kind of style and paint more details later, otherwise I will never get anything done.
Reverse Cowblending is definitely my favorite painting technique. I use it all the time
Very helpful
Excellent.
I am impressed how the sword comes out.
Will test this out
The perfectionist in me won't let me stop at TTQ, but I ought to give this a go for my next project just to get something looking good enough for games far sooner
Awesome! I just bought 1k eldar, this will help me so much!
Gotta say you use some awesome music in your videos! I enjoy the background music as much as the tutorials
This looks so liberating.
I'm currently painting High Elves for a tournament that takes place in two weeks, been painting 1 unit of Seaguard, 2 skycutters and now white lions since november. I'm clocking in at about 2-2,5 hours/mini and the feeling of painters burnout is immense.
Oh no! Are you highlighting all the scales on the armour individually???
the most important part is forming the tip with that sharp AF brush licking technique.
:D
I mean, I've been watching you for a a year plus+ and now you hit us with this goodness. You're greedy with your knowledge, Eric.
All good advice.
I've never gone as dark as black on my power swords .... I think I'll try it. Looks great.
Cheap paints and cheap materials! Commander Cheapskate approved :D. Excellent tutorial sir!
I too would currently be painting up some Fire Dragons if I had some, they are looking pretty strong in the new codex
So much good stuff here, I like to say I paint to a tabletop plus standard because if you're painting an army you will go crazy edge highlighting every single pouch on a space marine.
I'm also a big fan of cheap black craft paint on the base rims, no sense using your good miniature paints!
TTQ Minus + : made my day 😀
I’ve started using matte varnish for basing. I’ve noticed it makes the base material stick better and it doesn’t crack as PVA might do over time.
I really like that blade! Might need to make my Necrons blades as such.
Do it!!! ⚔️
Totally agree with you that assembly sucks. Great video man, rock on!
Yes! Love these techniques. I've always been a fan of blasting out models as fast as possible. Super invaluable for players!
I gotta get these space elves on the table while they have their moment in the sun!
TTQ minus plus made me literally LOL!!
After watching this video I now feel confident enough to paint my forty plus imperial guardsmen.
