After triumphantly casting off the shackles of claustrophobic dissonance on 2020's lauded "Stare Into Death and Be Still", New Zealand unorthodox Death Metal legends ULCERATE up the ante even further with mind-bending 7th album "Cutting the Throat of God".
An acknowledgement that the band's most powerful and affecting material leans to the melodic side, this refined and hook-laden new record is a self-sufficient universe unto itself, a conflagration of inventively visceral Death/Black Metal where dizzying experimentation meets head-nodding abandon - obscenely twisted and addictive, heart-stopping in its depth of feeling.
After a quarter-century of playing music together, Hoggard/Saint Merat are cemented as one of the strongest guitar-percussion combinations in Extreme Metal, and their music has evolved organically into something completely its own. The most well-produced ULCERATE record to date, "Cutting the Throat of God" is filled with peerless rhythms, the band's smoothest transitions, most compelling phrasing, and truly staggering riffage. The exhilarating, liquescent flow is topped off by a destructively dynamic performance from vocalist/lyricist Paul Kelland.

Best thing about Ulcerate's music is there's melodies underneath the layers of dissonant madness
They display incredible compositional skills per se. Their pieces arranged for piano sound like 20th century classics. Strange classics, of course, lined with melody. You have strings of chords that almost fly apart from an overload of dissonance. But they not only don't fall apart, they create a melody. It's funny that metal reaches such a level of abstraction at a time when probably all the major contemporary composers are returning to tonality and trying to communicate with a wide audience.
This is pretty overtly melodic compared to the old stuff
@@tomaszkaminski6495 I've remarked, that their death metal, much as with their cousins in the dissonant side of the black metal scene, reminds me strongly of late romantic and early modern orchestral composers, particularly the composers from Eastern Europe. There's shades of Mussorgsky and Stravinsky in there, and any of the other even more experimental composers (whose names elude my memory) that played with dissonance to an even greater degree. Even the constant flurry tremolo picking the stacked layers of chord progressions are build around is akin to how the string sections were used.

Yes, Ulcerate (and similar bands) have "reconstructed" the decay phase of tonality, a frightening and fascinating moment in music history. There is also a lot of death metal that is simply atonal or rather "doesn't reckon with tonality."

These singles are making me think this album is going to be their best. There’s something massive about how it all sounds.
The sheer love this band gets in the new releases' comment section is impressive, yet totally deserved and indeed one cannot thank them enough. It's truly once in a century amounts of talent these guys have.
This band has single-handedly rekindled my interest for extreme music, I do hope one day it's recognised for what it is, and of course, to see them live here in Europe.

I've listened to 'The Dawn is Hollow' and 'To Flow Through Ashen Hearts' more times than I would like to admit. Now I have another one to add to it, while eagerly anticipating this AOTY to drop. I have not been this excited for a release in a really, really long time. I often thought about how they could possibly follow Stare Into Death, and yet here they are, doing just that. It's beyond incredible.

The final riff reminds me of the main riff from everything is fire. This style lined with the more melodic approach of their recent works is just epic
I don't know what I love the most about these new songs. The chaos of the beginning, the melody of the quieter interludes or the emotional catharsis of the ending.

Its crazy how this guys completly mastered their craft. I simply cannot believe how can you top the level of musical excelence that they present.
The joy of hearing each one of these songs for the first time is such an unique and irreplaceable moment in the eternity of my life that i can only say thank god i am still alive to witness these guys deliver such majestic music. This is also the most weird and surprising song they've released in a while.

These guys break all kinds of personal rules of mine for music: songs sound similar, vocalist uses similar patterns and ranges, guitar uses “noises” (even the same ones between songs and albums!)… and somehow they are never repetitive, monotonous or unsurprising. What a creative and unique group. Killing it!
