Matte paintings are done all the time in films these days, though they are mostly produced digitally, often with a great deal of computer "assist" and tools. (I actually thought the ones in this film didn't look all that much like paintings, other than the one in the ship's cargo hold...just my opinion. Some fairly large portions of the shots on the planet where the characters are were actually built full size, and aren't part of the art work. The problem I have with a lot of CG is that it often has an "assembly-line" and/or plastic look, meaning they show the little "fingerprints" and other signatures of the digital tools....and also the propensity for creators of the images to so often "go for broke" with exaggerated splendor that makes a lot of it look like picture postcards...which, in spite of their presumed "beauty" all start to look the same, all become monotonous and uninteresting. The "assembly-line" look I was making reference to.)
Btw, yes, the Mutant in THIS ISLAND EARTH was a very definite inspiration for the MARS ATTACKS bubblegum cards on which Tim Burton's movie was based: The cards supplied the exact look that is seen in his film.)

Thank you for the video. You explain this all in a clear and fun way.
When I saw this when it originally came out I was grabbed pretty much from the get-go since---with the glowing plane---a very strange mystery was immediately launched. THEN the catalogue (which to this day I wish really existed) really upped the mystery and intrigue.
The aliens you are referring to are the guys with the white hair and foreheads/are from Metaluna. The big-brained creatures on the planet are their slaves called "mutants" since they have been artificially bred.
I knew a lot of the people who worked on this film, including the director who lived to ripe age into his mid-90's and was not far from me. He would have been thrilled to know that people like you still enjoyed the film. It was a very difficult film to make due to all of the effects, the costumes, make-up, the creature etc, plus being a Technicolor film shot on a very modest budget. I see it as one of the more imaginative films from that era, more of a "science fantasy" than pure science fiction, since so many of the elements speculate about and reveal so many "far away" fanciful ideas and planetary visions . It is an interesting blend of classy, smart settings and pure weirdness.

This was famously done by MST3K: The Movie back in the 90s. Definitely worth checking out.

Joel was not happy that THIS ISLAND EARTH was chosen for the feature. He disagreed (in the 1990's at least) that they should be making fun of films that were obvious classics. His thought was along the lines of "who are we to make fun of things that we ourselves aren't talented enough to make" (paraphrasing). He felt that they shouldn't have gone after some of the big Russian folklore epics, or even ROCKETSHIP X-M. He had gone out on his own, having left the group not long before he'd made these comments to me.

I've loved This Island Earth since I first saw it as a child some nearly 50 years ago.
I must disagree with your description of Exeter's people as "good guys." While Exeter himself is a sympathetic character, his fellow Metalunans are a nasty lot. And even Exeter himself did not seem overly disturbed by the incineration of our heroes' fellow scientists and the adorable cat Neutron. Exeter himself finally disobeys the leader of his planet only after learning of the plan to rob humanity of free will.
