    I am a still photographer. The Z5 is simply outstanding. I have taken my best outdoor shots ever with the Z5. You just have to know your camera's limitations and how to use it. What is critical is the glass. Nikon glass is terrific.

    Even if the processor is Expeed 6 doesn't mean it's the same binning. Even processors from the same wafer are not created equally. Some are ok, some are worse some are excellent. Depending on their flaws and how hot they get they might be able to process full sensor signal or not. Obviously they're not mad to use the higher binned processor for Z5, they're using it for better cameras and the ones that can't do full sensor readout are used for mid/lower tier cameras. That's the reason they first roll out the high end cameras, they sort the good parts, build the expensive stuff, sell it, then the parts that can't get that high performance are used for lower tier cameras. It's working the same with desktop/laptop/mobile devices cpus and gpus and pretty much everything. Also I'm pretty sure that the sensor doesn't even have full sensor readout for 4k so even if you slap a Z6 image processor the sensor will not be able to feed the data. I mean even the Z6 sensor and processor is used to it's upper limits, they're literally squeezing everything they can from the hardware.

    All the Z cameras share the same EVF resolution although maybe not Z50 but full frames yes. Z5 shares older but still commendable D750 sensor and it did similar in live view. Anyways check menu settings for “apply settings to live view” toggle on/off to see if that makes it better worse at night. Also the older sensor type has a slower readout speed and maybe skipping lines in low light to give you that look. Just my findings over time working with my Z6ii and trying mates Z5’s.
    To be fair modern cameras just rip compared to back in the day, features/AF/noise are pretty dam good 👍

      Josh you're a legend. Thanks for the comments mate. Great to learn from your insights and experience. My research led me to believe that the only different in Z5 and Z6 sensor is that the Z6 is illuminated on the back side. But you're saying the Z5 sensor is much older in its design?

      @joshmorgan3750 Před 3 lety +1

      @@RalphMayhewPhotography From all of my digging around and also personal experiences with a D750 for awhile yea it seems to be a refactored or mildly updated version of that sensor in the current Z5’s with a higher ISO level and phase detect AF, a great way for Nikon to lower the price in comparison to the Z6/Z7’s but still keeping it current with AF and standard mirrorless feature sets. I guess there is only so far you can push old tech before it’s limits are exposed in more drastic ways at times. Astro/severe low light being hard on most systems let alone a sensor being 7 odd years old by design 🤷‍♂️

    I simply did not want to spend another $1000 to get a z6ii so I got the z5 and used it in the last year and it works very well most of the time. Photos are good and video is very good. I don't need 4K. If I am using in studio, I can add an external 5 inch monitor to video capture myself. Sometimes its AF is not perfect in video for action video. The photo AF is fine. All in all a good camera for low light and IBIS at this price point. That said someday I may sell it for a Z6ii or Z6iii coming out mid next year, but not anytime soon, as if fulfills most needs. Worth buying and recommending the Z5. Thanks for the review.

      If you're coming from a different brand camera you don't need the expensive chunk of metal since you don't own any older Nikon lenses. If you've already invested in Nikon glass it would be great but they wouldn't be selling many Z mount lenses. In order to get cash flowing for development of new Z lenses they need demand to rise. It's a catch 22.

    Nik8n-Z5-8-def
    1) Only tiltable LCD screen - depends on your photographic habits, for street its is optimal.
    2) The price of the adapter has nothing to do with the Z 5. For old lenses there are affordable adapters
    at about 40$ - I use a NEWYI AI-N.Z adapter. By the way I bought a used Z 5 for that purpose....
    3) Yes shooting at night is a problem, much worse than at all my Olympus cameras.
    4) Yes, 4K cropped is disappointing but reasonable due to the lower price. Maybe there will be a firmware update.
    5) Yes the same with point four - but you have to decide what the camera should be for.
    6) Top LCD screen would be fine but then buy a Z 6! But except for menu fummeling normally I look through the EVF or onto the screen when changing parameters presented on the top LCD on 6,7,9!
    7) Serious photographers refrain from flashes on the camera let alone built-in ones.
    AND neither Z 6 nor Z 7 have a built-in flash!
    8) Yes for long time shootings could be a problem but as long as you stay by the camera you will notice the end if you still can remember having pressed the shutter button...
    And for shots over the whole night you need to set a timer at any rare
    But at the end I realized that you did not mean it that way...

    Only limitation for me was the FPS but have a D500 for when the need for speed is needed. And really no need for full articulating screen but would be nice to have. Or really video as just a stills photographer.
    My D500 coupled with my Z5 I feel complete. Except now needing and wanting that 100-400 or 200-600 promised. But fear it will be out of my price range around the $1000 $1400 the upper limit I can afford. But if not then the Z 24-200 is a crak'in lens for general walkabout and some nature kinds of shooting.

    Great channel. Glad I found it. Happy you did some videos on this camera. It doesn't get the recognition it deserves! Concerning night use, the Z5 does extremely well for astrophotography. The use of a bahtinov mask should always be used anyway for critical star focus. I think the Z5 is the best bargain offered by Nikon in their ML lineup. I did have a Z6II and sold all my Nikon gear when I tried Canon. Now I'm back to Nikon and choose the Z5. Why not another Z6II? I never needed the high FPS. Even shooting wildlife, I was a short burst shooter. I find shorter bursts kept me on the target better and avoided BO. The side benefit is not a lot of photos to go through. A top LCD screen rarely got use. I'm a EVF shooter and the EVF is amazing. Video is rarely used and what this camera outputs is good enough. A lower FL lens would be used if the crop bothered me anyway. Better yet, sometimes I mount the iPhone 13 Pro Max on the hotshoe and video problem solved. All the higher end features are there though in this camera like focus peaking, intervalometer and focus stacking etc. A BSI sensor is nice, but with advances in software noise mitigation, it's a non-factor. This camera is on sale now at $1099us. It's a steal of a deal for a FF ML for anyone looking. I also picked up a "used"(looks brand new) Z24-200 for only $475us. A super sharp copy! Put the lens on auto ISO with a ISO limit when zooming and it's a great walk around team.

    I have the Z5 and love it. While I agree those things are legit complaints. But the only one that bothers me at all is the 4k crop. Even then, it isn''t a deal breaker to me. To others, that might be, but not to me.
    Let me also say that I was a long time film guy, so I might be easier to please than those that grew up in the digital age. Most of my film cameras didn't have autofocus. Of my film cameras, only my Nikon F5 could shoot at a faster frame rate than the Z5.
    In the digital age, I have been using Nikon's "enthusiast" level DSLRs, like the D7xxx series. While the Z5 is often called Nikon's entry level full frame mirrorless camera, I think it is much more like enthusiast level cameras than "entry level". Ugh, some misinformation happening here: #1 viewfinder resolution is the same with the z5, z6 and z7. #2 Cropped 4K is still 4K, no more and no less. The resolution of the final video doesn't change just because a smaller part of the sensor is being read. The part that is read out, still has a resolution of 4K or higher. #3 How on God's earth is the resolution of the viewfinder in any way connected to the performance of the autofocus? You make it sound like the lower pixel count of the EVF (which we know isn't the case) makes the AF less performant. What???

      I use mine for macro and it works quite well for that purpose. The focus peaking is a great tool to use, since most folks use manual focus with macro. The only down side is it doesn't have the higher resolution sensor that the Z7 and above have. Of course they start at almost $3K MSRP vs $1400 for the Z5. 24 MP is enough for quite large enlargements and still retain lots of detail. I've used focus shift, and it is slick, but I normally shoot handheld with a flash and do focus bracketing manually. One down side to it's focus shift system is that you lose the display when starting the focus shift menu. This means you must use a tripod with this feature.

Long exposure indicator will add light to a dark scene, so it doesn't make sense unless in your case, your subjects are far away, but if you're shooting a building or closer subject, it add light. The adapter is Nikon Z mount , not a Z5 problem! Top LCD doesn't exist on lower end bodies on any manufacturer!
    So there are actually only 4 real issues.

  • @ChaplainDMK
    @ChaplainDMK Před 3 lety +3

    Nikon really kicked the bucket with the Z5, it's a great camera, but 4,5 fps, gimped autofocus, and cropped 4k are just artificial limitations so it's not eating into the Z6 and Z6II. Instead of it being an absolutely mind blowing entry range full frame MILC it's only a really good entry range full frame MILC. And especially since the Z5 is currently basically the most competitive Nikon MILC - Z6 II competes with the Canon R6 and Sony A7III, where it's limitations are apparent, while the Z5s competition are 2-3 year old models like the Canon RP, Sony A7II, or ASP-C cameras like the A6600 and Fuji XT-30.
    Just having the Z5 get the wide area eye AF, 8-10 fps burst and uncropped 4K 30 would have made this camera absolutely crush every competitor in the 1200-1500€ price range and make it stand alone as a viable entry level full frame MILC while making most top range ASP-C MILCs seem rather pointless.
    Nikon needs to update it to Z5II with these features, push the Z6 line up into competition with the R6 and A7 IV (so 2500€ price), and the Z7 line up into competition with the A7RIV, R5 etc., and the Z9 as the top line pro sports camera competing with the A1 and R3. They also have to get Sigma and Tamron on board to release cheaper lenses, and release cheaper 1,8 primes for the Z line and push the ASP-C Z50 down below 1000€ or just axe the ASP-C Z line. At this point they're a bit all over the place, the Z50 is pointless because of the shit lens selection, the Z5 is needlessly gimped and not living up to it's potential, the Z6 II is great but will probably become outclassed when the A7 IV drops, and the Z7 II is just awkwardly placed - basically the same body as the Z5 and Z6 but a much bigger sensor and no other real performance gain, and just doesn't compete with the R5 or R6 at all.

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 Před 2 lety +2

      Of course, and Rolls Royce need to start making their cars affordable, after all they're just BMW made salonfähig. Oh wait, bad example because that is so over-engineered that replacing a $5 seal may cost you $500 in labor and their 3 series chairs give me a hernia. When I bought into Nikon over 40 years ago with an F2, I shot Hasselblad, Cambo (4"x5") and Sinar P (8"x10") professionally. The choice for Nikon was for the great glass, robustness and reliability, as well as their service attitude and worldwide service network. It's why NASA took Nikon into space. When Nikon have an f-up, they admit and solve it. When another brand has quality issues they are sued in class action and then fight back for years. The Z glass is on another level. Where excellent F glass suffered (better, I as its user) from chromatic aberration, the Z glass solves that, is sharper, has less glare/flare/ghosting (you'll have to make your sunstars and aperture trails in Photoshop), controls focus breathing (focus breathing is "normal" under the laws of physics and a prime lens that does not have it, actually is a zoom lens), has very fast fly-by-wire focusing - and all such qualities are reasons to buy into the Z system. A Z 5 is an affordable way to buy into the full-frame Z system glass that cannot be adapted to any other mount. Next to this all, the main reasons to buy into Nikon in the past 2 digital decades were dynamic range and the incredibly good straight out of camera files, both raw and JPEG. Generally, the issues listed in YT about any camera are from armchair expertologist opinionistas with zero portfolio or only basic snapshots. All these cameras you mention do very well in genres that earn a good photographer real money. Look at a few of Jason Boland's videos before the Z 9. Look at Morten Hilmer in Norwegian winter at -20C (-4F), recently.

    • @ChaplainDMK
      @ChaplainDMK Před 2 lety

      @@jpdj2715 Did you read what I wrote? Nikon currently has good cameras but its positioning them wrong. Why would you buy a Z6 II when the A7 III/IV or R6 just beat it out in most aspects? Why would you buy a Z7 II when the A7RIV or R5 beat it out in most aspects?
      The R5 is currently positioned well, but it's needlessly compromised - the AF and burst speed are artificially limited since the Z5 has the same processor as the Z6 and Z7, which can do much higher bursts and can do wide area eye AF.
      Hopefully the Z5 II comes soon with all the AF improvements that the Z9 got and is kept at the 1000-1500€ price point.
      Not having third part glass is bollocks and you know it. Cannon and Nikon are squeezing their customers for premium priced first party lenses that a lot won't need or can't afford. Meanwhile at Sony I can get a Sigma Art 24-70 2,8, which in tests compares to the Canon and Nikon first party versions, for literally half the price. Or I can get a way more affordable 1,8 prime, or a wide angle fisheye for rare occasions

      Is there a crop on the Z50? I own a Z6 and it's amazing I use it for video all the time. Depends how important 4K is. If it's not for premium use all the time, I'd go the Z5.

      @@RalphMayhewPhotography no crop on z50 for 4K shooting. But is probably same as crop in z5 though.

      Yep you’re right. I wonder if there is a Japanese cultural push not to do that sort of thing? It’s something you can see Canon doing.

    24-70 or 24-200? Why?

    • @RalphMayhewPhotography
      @RalphMayhewPhotography  Před 3 lety +1

      24-200 if your f stop is at 4. 24-70 if you get a lower f stop then 4 IE. 2.8. The lower the f stop the more creative things you can do with a lens. My exception would be if your doing only landscape and travelling so need one less to do it all. The. The 24-200 (quality won’t be as good) but your range will be great. What are you shooting?

    I had this and exchange with amazing hybrid d780.
    Z5 has very basic level of iso performence and autofocusing is very bad.
    Really worthless for the money.
