Man Ken Squire was so good at building the tension leading up to the start he got you in the mind set that you were about to watch the most unpredictable event ever, it was masterful
this race got me into nascar 25 years ago…my parents were crazy for the 3 and I was rooting for their nemesis (out of 10 year old spite-I also rooted for the Cowboys back then but grew out of that quick, go Birds) Gordon staying on the lead lap after pitting and then swooping in at the end to take it cemented my love for this sport…I watched as many races as I could from then on until Jeff retired…nascar needs to end the “chase” so we can get back to real racing.
I remember going and seeing Gordon's winning car from 1999 I think it was. The amount of bugs on the car was amazing, it looked like he had a black front end but it was just all bugs. You would think after a few laps all the bugs would be dead but I guess they just keep flying back onto the track. Jeff probably led alot of laps that year which would have exposed his car to more bugs haha.

I think these three (Ken Squier, Ned Jarrett; Buddy Baker) were the best announcers in NASCAR. The rest of the announcers were annoying as hell. And they are whiney. Ken Squier was a professional. I can't stand people like Mike Joy or Bob Jenkins. bleh
They really should have thrown a red flag after the 13-car crash with 5 to go. Probably could have had 2 green flag laps to finish it after that. Red flag at 197 on the backstretch, give the 1 to go on 198.

Earl Award in which it was made of wood with figurines on it. The next year, the current form of the Daytona 500 trophy the Harley J. Earl trophy, was given out. Dale Earnhardt was the first one to take home the mini regular, and he said it was by far the heaviest trophy he ever held because it was made out of marble. Jeff Gordon in 1999 got the second one but they made it lighter out of acrylic. Today the trophy weighs 54 pounds, is 18" tall, 22" wide, and 12" deep.
I wish NASCAR would go back to this style racing. There wasn’t a caution for every wall scrape and there wasn’t 18,000 cautions to bunch the field back up double file.

Watched this race and when Benson hit the wall hard after his contact, one thing crossed my mind. Dale Earnhardt. He would hit the wall in much the same way and pass away into NASCAR history. I sure do miss him. As for my favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. Wow, to come back after that cut tire. I mean he really was patient. Dale stated Jeff was a little impatient, but I think Dale meant that he should have waited a hair longer, but at near 200 mph, a hair long can mean the difference between winning and losing. Yes, as I watched Jeff pull into victory lane, I wonder if he knew that Dale would be killed. That he would be divorced from his wife. That he would one day call it a day and become a FOX announcer. Who knew. I loved this race because almost everyone got a chance. Despite the fact it was run with restricter plate technology. Obviously, Rick Hendrick invested well in his drivers, cars and teams. 1....2....3 at this Daytona 500. However, he was running a more serious race at the time. Cancer. Of all the races in 97, this was my favorite. Today, 2015, the racing is okay, but with Jeff leaving, the whole deal seems sad, but he goes out on top and that is due to one thing. GOD

So, yeah, all of the Cup races from 1997 televised by CBS has already been UL'ed onto here. Now, if you are talking about the BGN and CTS races that they televised that year.....that's a different story. -_-

I was at this 500 sitting right there in Tiny Lund tower where that hood off Ernie Irvin's hood flew into the stand's and hit a couple people right in front of us i'll never forget we also FROZE our butt's off it was very windy and cold and even worse my man Earnhardt wreaked out AGAIN but redeemtion came the next year. RIP Dale .
So weird to see Daytona International Speedway with the stands in Turn 3 and Daytona with all those stands with no lights, and the Daytona painted on the walls basically the current way (Except thinner).

So nice to see all those old names out there. All of them are gone now. Pretty bad race coverage by CBS. That was before they had a scroll so we had no idea what was going on back in the pack. JG apparently worked his way forward from 18th or so before that caution but we had no idea how he did it. I don't think they mentioned Mark Martin again when he went to the back. There was a lot of racing going on back there while the leaders ran in single file. They actually went to commercial right as there was some great racing right before JG cut the tire. All the front runners were going at it. Naturally they came back just in time to show us the front 5 cars running in a line again. A newer fan (if they exist) would be shocked at how aggressive JG drove back then. After his 2nd marriage he got too passive. That pass on DE was pretty epic in how he took the air off of DE's car. Then going to the apron to pass Bill Elliott. NASCAR pretty much outlawed that because of JG doing it again in 99.

Right! Now the 500 ends at night, they start the race at 3pm and it is dark by the halfway point! Nascar finds a way to ruin everything.

@@anthonygreene6307 You were right, it was Ernie Irvan's hood that flew into the grandstands. There was one fan injured but it was only a minor injury.

Pretty bad race coverage by CBS. That was before they had a scroll so we had no idea what was going on back in the pack. JG apparently worked his way forward from 18th or so before that caution but we had no idea how he did it. I don't think they mentioned Mark Martin again when he went to the back. There was a lot of racing going on back there while the leaders ran in single file.
They actually went to commercial right as there was some great racing right before JG cut the tire. All the front runners were going at it. Naturally they came back just in time to show us the front 5 cars running in a line again.
A newer fan (if they exist) would be shocked at how aggressive JG drove back then. After his 2nd marriage he got too passive. That pass on DE was pretty epic in how he took the air off of DE's car. Then going to the apron to pass Bill Elliott. NASCAR pretty much outlawed that because of JG doing it again in 99.
