      Hello Richard, thanks for your comment. We stayed in regular hotels in cities and at a desert sleepover in Wahiba Sands (I've posted the name of the place earlier). When it comes to renting a car, my word of advice would be - don't believe a single post that claims 4x4 is the only option to travel through Oman. If you are like us - self-drive trip through major tourist highlight around Nothern Oman - a sedan is more than enough. Highways there are new and reliable. There are plenty of options to hire a driver for dessert and mountain ventures, where 4x4 is indeed necessary. Hope it hepls make your planning easier.

      It's funny you should mention Mavic and sand because there are still tiny grains of Wahiba desert in it from the only time when I launched it off the ground =) Tip: Do not step on the same rake and learn how to launch and land Mavic with your hand.

    Hey guys, thx for sharing the impressions of oman with us. we will go there next week and we have a question: We normally also use a mavic 2 to make some drone shots but got the information, that drones are strongly forbidden there. How did you handled that. Did you just ignored the laws there or is just nobody paying attention to drones there? what did the security say at the airport? would be nice to get feedback from you guys, cause we are totally unsure to bring the drone or not...

    A quick update regarding using drone in Oman. It came from my friend who is a teacher in Oman. Oman just put a law into place that if you are caught flying a drone you get mandatory from 6 months up to 3 year in jail. I didn't confirm it myself.

    Hey bud. Thanks for the video. We did exactly the same trip but in the opposite direction. Every day exceeded our expectations. We also have some go pro videos and pictures but would have loved to have a drone. How did you manage to get approval if I may ask?

      Hello Niel Visagie, thank you for taking your time to leave a comment.
      Oman is an amazing destination. To be honest with you, I only discovered I should've had a permit when people started asking me about it in the comments to this video. It was the first time I had taken a drone for a trip, and I had no way of knowing that drones are illegal in some counties. I guess I got lucky - I could've easily been caught.
      I went to Oman last year for a hiking trip with students and took my drone with me. No questions were asked and I ended up getting some decent shots. The video is on my channel as well, it's called "Traveling to Oman, Four-Day Camping and Hiking".

      Frankly speaking, at the time we were traveling to Oman, I didn't know drones are illegal there. So, I was carrying it in my carry-on luggage the whole time.

      teach & travel Apparently you need to apply for a permit. (www.paca.gov.om/services/flight-safety-department-1/unmanned-aircraft-systems-uas-drone). Seems like a long drawn out process!
      Did you pack the drone in your checked or hand baggage?

      A quick update regarding using drone in Oman. It came from my friend who is a teacher in Oman. Oman just put a law into place that if you are caught flying a drone you get mandatory from 6 months up to 3 year in jail. I didn't confirm it myself.

      I'm a local citizen in Oman, as of 14th Jan 2018 drones are mentioned under Article 144 of Omani Penal Code which you can find a PDF copy at data.qanoon.om/og/1226a.pdf
      It is however in Arabic, here's a quick rough translation:
      A punishment of 6 months up to 3 years will be given to the following:
      A- Those that flew over the country's territory with any means without proper authorization from a designated authority, this includes unmanned aerial vehicles or any other flying object.
      B- Those whom took photographs, drawings or maps of sites or places contrary to the embargo set by the designated authority.
      C- Those that enter a military establishment, a camp, or a place that is inhabited or settled by armed forces, warships, commercial aircraft, military aircraft, military vehicles or an arsenal, or a porter or a factory that proceeds in work that gives interest in the defense of the country, where its entry shall be prohibited for unauthorized personnel.
      D- Resided or found in any of the places that the designated authority prohibits residence or presence in it.
      If said crime is committed during time of war, imprisonment shall be from 5 years up to a maximum of 15 years.
      -------------------------------------
      That's all what it says but if you ask me, I can tell you that it can become a compounded issue if you take illegal photography since there's a whole other section of this which can be found under the Information Technology Laws and Regulation of Digital Media.
      So far drones are used by companies for their activities in a legal manner but from what I hear is that they do require authorization to use one, the same applies to individuals.
      How do you obtain authorization is still slightly unclear but you can read about it here:
      www.paca.gov.om/services/flight-safety-department/unmanned-aircraft-systems-uas-drone
      My advice is to use drones in a non invasive manner, just use common sense, I don't think you will like it when someone invades your private space.
      -------------------------------------
      Beautiful video by the way, I'm a citizen yet haven't experienced half of what you just did haha.
      Cheers

    Hey, how did you get your drone into Oman - I have heard that they x-ray everything on arrival and confiscate drones?

    • @edtechii
      @edtechii  Před 6 lety

      Well, it has been confirmed that flying drones for recreational purposes is illegal in Oman. However, I learned it only after I left Oman. When I went to Cuba last summer, I witnessed how a guy next to me got his Mavic confiscated. So, yes it does happen in countries where drones are not allowed. There are tricks how you can bypass that. Try to do some research.

    • @TheSmallsAbroad
      @TheSmallsAbroad Před 6 lety

      I have tried to do research, and have asked many people here on youtube, but can't seem to get a definitive answer. Did you fly in with your drone?

    • @edtechii
      @edtechii  Před 6 lety

      I can partially explain why you cannot find a definite answer to your question.
      Because accessible drone videography is a relatively novel phenomenon, the legal basis for drone pilots have not been clearly established yet. There is a lot of grey area, therefore many countries (e.g. Oman, Cuba) have simply banned drones outright just to play it safe. So long as you follow common sense, do not bother people around you and not fly over military bases and oil refineries, no one is going to put you in jail. Believe me, they have a bigger fish to fry.

    • @OneAndOnlyMe
      @OneAndOnlyMe Před 6 lety

      One trick is to disassemble your drone so that it does not look like a drone in an x-ray image. Consider also the luggage you place it into. Separate the bits out.

    • @edtechii
      @edtechii  Před 6 lety

      Tried it when we went to Cuba. It did work. Didn't dare to fly it there though.

    • @edtechii

      There are plenty example on CZcams alone of illegal (e.g. filming landing airplanes) use of drones. Legal restrictions are just a safety measure in response to those careless and blatant drone "owners".
