  • I'm missing a leg - I'm not a disturbing sight that children need to be shielded from. Everything I speak about in this video is based upon my interpretations of communications from CZcams and their stated policies. At no point has CZcams directly told me that I am "disturbing" imagery but their actions in continuing to restrict my content leads me to believe that is exactly what is being implied.

      It's because the algorithm isn't intentional, it's ML automated to screen for and shut down really messed up stuff immediately and push forward stuff that people click on. Her videos, as they deal with material related to lost limbs (which is fine) triggers automated processes to censor potentially graphic or violent content. Stuff like this is annoying, but it is fixed quickly. It's also preferable to have the occasional mix up than have CZcams be like LiveLeak or something.
      This video, which spurs views and outrage over the issue is recommended more and isn't shut down automatically as it includes less information recognizable to the algorithm as probably graphic or violent. Beyond that, CZcams probably allowed her videos specifically upon review because of her response to the algorithm's mistake. So, the algorithm recommends her popular videos as normal.

    For anyone wondering who may not think it's a big deal, It's important to note that "Age Restriction" doesn't mean that you lose the 10% of the viewers under 18, or however much it is for the specific channel.
    - It gets completely removed from all recommended, "next video" feeds, etc. Only place the video can be found is on channel pages and very specific searches. In some countries you even need to be logged in to watch it. It also disables video embeds on external websites.
    - Oh, and it usually gets demonetized too
    An age gate is (views/revenue wise) almost the same as unlisting or even deleting a video
    Most reviews, including thumbnail takedowns, age restrictions and most demonetizations, are made by bots.
    I hope it gets better for you, just found the channel and I love the vibe.

Scenario: Parent is an amputee and would like to assist their youngling (hehe ok bad joke) in understanding and accepting aputee life. Sure they could sit down with their youth and talk about it, but what if they are not always available to have nice talks? Exposing the youth to things can have bad impacts but also positive ones. As an amputee, I find this absolutely disgusting. I was a pediatric amputee, and being a child going through amputation is unfathomable. It was terrifying. And what people don’t get is that there are little to NO advocacy resources out there!! I only wish that I had content like yours when I was a child to see that it’s okay, and that things won’t be so scary as it seems.
    As an amputee, you suddenly pick up on things and hold yourself differently. You see the stares. You hear the whispers. There needs to be more discussion about amputees so prosthetics can be more normalized in society. Children need to be exposed to this just as much as they need to be exposed to children with other disabilities such as autism or paraplegia. We need to start normalizing these things.
    I became so self conscious as an amputee. My leg makes certain clothes look weird, I don’t want strangers to always have that as a first impression, etc. (PS: I’ve grown so much and now I am completely confident in my prosthesis), but what CZcams is doing is confirming those self conscious thoughts! They’re telling me that I can’t comfortably take of my own prosthesis in public, out of fear of “disturbing” someone else. THATS RIDICULOUS PEOPLE?! Right? I remember a friend of my parents who was (and probably still is) missing all the fingers on one hand. I was 6 or 7 and interested in the story but I don't remember a bit of fear or whatever. It was just interesting that he was different. Not disgusting or scary or traumatizing. Just childish curiosity is all I felt. Like any child would, when they see new stuff.
      You're 100% correct that it's the adults but I'd like to add that it's mostly those who were never exposed to amputees. Nowadays, my best friend has been missing some fingers for more than a decade. Almost all of the time it's the first thing people notice or ask about him, when meeting him first. And then, time and time again, after a while of knowing him, the finger thing just doesn't matter anymore. I think we as humans just need exposure to understand that different isn't worse.

    • @PixieoftheWood
      @PixieoftheWood Před 2 lety +2

      @A R To be fair, I don't think it's the same thing at all. Blind people *need* to have their guide dog to navigate the world properly, but people don't need their regular dogs with them wherever they go and there are places that are inappropriate to bring dogs. I don't know what the rules are where you are, but where I live, for example, any dog that is not a service dog must be crated while on public transit. Also, while I personally wouldn't be afraid of a dog sleeping on the ground, the breeds people tend to be afraid of 'because of the breed' are breeds that have been specifically bred for dog fighting.
      Since dog breeders select for behavior just as much as looks when creating a dog breed, you frequently have dogs bred for a task able to just slip into their breed behaviors with little warning. Having a border collie start herding children or a poodle dive into a lake to retrieve some random dead duck that's floating there isn't much of an issue, but having a fighting dog slip into their breed traits is.
      Now, the majority of pitbulls will never kill anyone in their lifetime. In fact, only one in ninety pitbulls will kill a person, pet or livestock in their lifetime. However, since there are 18 million pitbulls in the US, that means nearly 200,000 pitbulls currently alive today will kill a person, pet or livestock. This generally does not count dogs in fighting rings, since dog fighters aren't reporting their numbers. This far outstrips the kill rate of any other dog breed, even rottweilers who are commonly recognized as an aggressive breed.
      While I do agree that we listen too much to people who screech the loudest, I don't think it's just the cowards we listen too much to. People used to understand that while service dogs should be allowed everywhere, there were many places that are inappropriate to bring a regular pet. Now you have a bunch of people insisting their regular household dog should be allowed with them everywhere. To make things worse, some of these people go out and get a fighting breed, then turn around and act like a martyr when people don't want to be around the dog that was, in the early 1900s, known as the 'dog that will keep fighting with two legs broken'.
      While the person screeching on the subway was probably overreacting since the dog was sleeping and clearly not attacking, the owner isn't in the right here, either. They deliberately went out and selected a breed that they knew would be more dangerous and threatening, and then deliberately brought the dog into spaces where people don't usually bring their pets and where they'd be enclosed with the dog and unable to get away. I'm pretty sure all that happened was they got the response they wanted.
      I don't think it's really fair to compare that to a person with a seeing eye dog.

      @bagelbagelwah5047 Před 2 lety +64

      I feel like, out of all of all the humans on the planet, kids would be the least concerned. Kids can be blunt, but more often than not, they're just curious, or they notice a difference that they don't understand (but don't necessarily feel judgemental or disgusted towards). For instance, a kid might think, "You're different than me. Why do you look like that? Oh, okay, that's why. Now let's go play together!"
      Adults have rigid mindsets and thought patterns that have had years to mature. They've also had enough time to experience plenty of social rejection (which can feel painful on a physical level), and this, in addition to growing up in their surrounding environments, can lead them to develop strict mental dichotomies, often in an effort to self-preserve. Humans, by nature, thanks to evolution, also tend to fear differences that they don't understand in others. Maybe this, coupled with the parents being overprotective of their children and children in general, makes the parents feel fear if they see such a difference near their kids? I'm not sure.
      But really, it's sadly hilarious that adults can often be the most judgmental of all when they've had years of wisdom to develop critical thinking skills. Dogs are nice. They don't judge, not like humans do. Unless you stop scratching their bellies before they're ready, of course.

Finally, when looking up BID i found its very rare to find these cases, and are you saying that her videos should honestly be hidden from the vast population of minors (where she wants them to learn more acceptance of themselves and other physically disabled people) because of the very rare cases where people want to cut off healthy limbs?? That seems like honest to God foolish logic if so, I understand where you could be coming from but like honestly that's stupid. I didn't have much experience interacting with disabled people while growing up. The opportunities just never presented themselves. And this was long before CZcams, and was when the internet was just starting to become a new household thing.
      If I could've watched gideos like this back then, it would really have helped. When I finally began to be able to meet people who are different, it was awkward and I didn't know what to do. Do I help them? Pitty them? Treat them differently? What?!?
      Luckily, I ended up getting enough experience once I got into college, and more once I hit the work force. However, info given to me in the work force was wrong (see mini tsngent below), but by this time I could see videos like this, and I now know this and know that yes, disabled people are different physically or mentally, but they are still people. Sometimes they need help, but don't assume that they do (if you suspect it, just offer assistance like you would with anyone else... like opening a door, or whatever). Otherwise, treat them like anyone else.
      Mini tangent:
      I was worked for a certain red colored retail store in the US. A part of normal training was to watch old 70's vhs training videos. One was about how to treat people with disabilities. I remember specifically that it said that when speaking to people in wheelchairs, you need to crouch down so that your eyes were level with them. This way, according to the video, you were not towering over them and instead, making you equals. I mean... yeah... this would be true if they were dogs or something... but doing this is pretty offensive. It's specifically calling out that they are different. Even draws unwanted attention too.
      The only reason I could see this as being a good idea is if the person in a wheelchair is also hard of hearing. This way, when you converse with them, they can hear you better since you're closer.
      Correct me if I'm wrong!

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was written in... 1990. It's a far bit always before anyone had any thought of creating a video hosting service. The act primarily deals with access to resources. This is mostly seen in modifying buildings and public places to accommodate mobility issues, allowing for visual/hearing/medical aides in public places (support animals), and alternative forms of access to things like telecommunications, radio and video. If she were an employee who actually worked for CZcams in one of their locations or if she was consuming media on CZcams with a visual or auditorily impairment, then she would have an ADA case.
      At this point, I don't think there is any law against what CZcams as a content platform can do with her videos. I think this will boil down to being a contract dispute over the Terms of Service and how they define disturbing content. It sucks. It's not right. But it's reality.
      Also none of us are lawyers, and she really should seek legal advice from a licensed and practicing attorney working in the field of disabled rights.

    "we know this is probably disappointing news" seems to be code for "we know we're doing something morally reprehensible, and you probably expected better." or maybe i'm just furious. i have a connective tissue disorder; my disability is largely invisible unless i'm on a cane or visibly braced that day. i've given up altogether on using motorized carts in shopping centers, because literally. every. time, an employee asks me why i'm using a cart, in a tone implying i'm just some goofy abled person wasting their resources. i've had elderly people mutter about how i should be ashamed when i dare to sit in the accessible bus seats without my cane. if you don't look "not-normal" enough to them, the general public assumes you're healthy and attention-seeking. if you're visibly disabled, they want you to stay tucked away, anything to avoid challenging their worldview & considering just how much most aspects of life stack against anyone who isn't largely healthy. even doctors are known to discount the pain & experience of disabled people, to minimize or ignore symptoms completely. "okay, but i want it on my chart that you said no to this test" becomes part of the vocabulary. this is exactly the attitude that allows this sort of thing to survive, and youtube knows it. and it's infuriating.

      I noticed signage on the disabled toilet in Haymarket train Station (Edinburgh, Scotland) that read "not all disabilities are visible" - it made me smile (and I'm hoping that more and more people are coming to realise this and will stop expecting people using disabled spaces and equipment to meet *their* expectations of what a disabled person should look like.

    This popped up in my feed. I think you're awesome! As a kid I had a school friend who was born with legs half the normal length and half a left arm. The only complete limb was her right arm. She had stiff prosthetic limbs which she would walk with and for gym class would take them off and walk around on her half-legs and complete arm. In my opinion she was a gift to all us 'able-bodied' kids because we got a good understanding of what it means to be 'disabled' and I admired her. Seeing and hearing about other people's lives helps develop greater understanding and compassion. If YT is censoring this content, no wonder today's kids are growing up with problems. My values are not theirs, it's taken me six years to realise they don't give a damn about achievements way out of the normal. Mine's considered a disorder, but if that's a disorder, I heard the comment from Table 6 I'll disorder what he's having.
      This is serious. The reason we have the Equalities Act in the UK is because if you're not male (48%), white (85%), neurotypical (70%), non-disabled (80%), ie outside of 23% of the population, you're likely to be discriminated against. That less than a quarter of the population can whipsaw the rest isbjust plain wrong.
