- A major new history of the Eastern Roman Empire (also known as Byzantium), from Constantine to 1453 by author and scholar Anthony Kaldellis.
In recent decades, the study of the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantium, has been revolutionized by new approaches and more sophisticated models for how its society and state operated. No longer looked upon as a pale facsimile of classical Rome, Byzantium is now considered a vigorous state of its own, inheritor of many of Rome's features, and a vital node in the first truly globalized world.
The New Roman Empire is the first full, single-author history of the eastern Roman empire to appear in over a generation. Covering political and military history as well as all the major changes in religion, society, demography, and economy, Anthony Kaldellis's volume is divided into ten chronological sections which begin with the foundation of Constantinople in 324 AD and end with the fall of the empire to the Ottoman Turks in the fifteenth century. The book incorporates new findings, explains recent interpretive models, and presents well-known historical characters and events in a new light.

This man is becoming a legend in Eastern Roman studies.
He's awesome. 🙂 Thanks for watching!
An outstanding work, and an outstanding scholar. This book ought to be mandatory reading for anyone pursuing the study of the Eastern Roman world,
We agree! Thank you for watching!
Charles Diehl was one of the greatest Byzantinists of all time. For example, his work, "Manuel d'Art Byzantin", despite being from 1925, is very comprehensive, and the tradition he left behind is enormous. For instance, with his disciple Bréhier, whose trilogy "La civilisation byzantine - Les institutions de l'empire byzantin and Vie et mort de Byzance - still today is a very relevant work, his description of the Byzantine navy is briliiant. It is a shame that it is forgotten that those who write history today owe so much to many generations, starting with Thucydides"
Big thanks for this one, Kelly. Dr. Kaldellis is my second favorite Romanland historian, next to Dr. Leonora Neville. The fact the I am a Senior Auditor here at the University of Wisconsin, Madison has absolutely nothing to do with that preference, of course. My copy of The New Roman Empire arrived last Saturday. My last class of the semester is next Monday. So, I will have the entire Winter Break to enjoy it.
Note to my fellow WHE colleagues: I will be accepting Sherpa applications until noon on Monday, December 11, 2023. This is an absolutely beautiful book: 1,133 pages of high-quality paper and binding. The 15 maps alone are worth the price of admittance. Cannot wait! - Pete
You're very welcome, Pete! We hope you enjoy the book and the break! 😊
I strongly recommend Dr. Kaldellis' podcast, "Byzantium & friends", it's truly outstanding
Thanks! We'll add it to our list. 😊
As an Ann Arborite and Michigan alum I am always happy to see a fellow Wolverine succeed as Anthony Kaldellis has. This book is next on my Kindle Wishlist, can't wait to crack it.
Go Blue!
Informative as always.
This book is now on my list.
We hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!

An excellent talk with Mr Kaldellis, Rome is by far my favourite civilisation and period (Empire, Republic, later under 'Byzantium')
Thanks for watching! There is plenty of other Rome content on our channel to check out after this interview!
Loved this!
Thanks, Jim! 🙂

I have to wait until February 1st, then pay £35 to get my hands on a copy of THE NEW ROMAN EMPIRE.
I never thought I'd envy an Australia.

Great video!
Thank you so much. 😊
Very interesting !
Thank you.
And Kelly....still marvellous.
Thanks for watching!
Loving the book so far.
We're happy to hear that! Thanks for watching!
They were level headed, but they did love their civil wars. I’m not knocking the East Romans. I love ‘em.
I was disappointed that he made no reference to his previous book, “Streams of Gold, Rivers of Blood: The Rise and Fall of Byzantium 955 A.D. to the First Crusade,” which was only published in 2017. I understand that “The New Roman Empire: A History of Byzantium” covers more of the early empire, but as someone who has read “Streams of Gold” - and enjoyed it - I wonder why he didn’t do a compare and contrast other than that he’s trying to sell a new book.
Hi! Thanks for watching! This interview was based purely on his new book. 🙂 I'm not sure if he compares and contrasts the two books somewhere else.
cool 🤓 very interesting
Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU KELLY GREAT SLICE OF HISTORY !
Thanks for watching!
Is there a similar book for the old roman empire?
Hi! There are many books about the Roman Empire. Here are some suggestions: worldhistory.org/books/search/?query=Roman+Empire&node=
