Is there anything quite like the feeling of cresting a hill and catching a glimpse of kites in the air as you approach a kite spot for the first time? That first thought… “It’s windy!!!” and the building excitement as you get closer and closer to the kite beach? This is a kite spot most of us have heard of and one many of us dream of one day riding… it’s the kiteboarding mecha of Europe: Tarifa, Spain.
For those of us who have only experienced kite spots in North America or the Caribbean, this is a completely new world. Tarifa has a rich and colourful history that will enchant both kiteboarders and non-kiteboarders. This city got its name nearly a thousand years before America was even settled… and it’s been a wild ride ever since! In modern day, it’s ripping winds make this spot a wind lovers dream.

If you go to Tarifa, rent a camper and sleep at your favorite beach or in town whereever you want, there are hundreds if not thousands of people from all over the world who do this.

Hi there, I will be travelling with my defender and roof tent to Tarifa next week and would love to know the best campsite on the beach to stay. Im an intermediate kiter so no issues with wind directions, but would love to camp as close to the beach as possible to wake up and hit the water. any tips welcome. thanks

Also you can fly into Gibraltar airport and drive 30 mins to Tarifa

I have been going to Tarifa for about 20 yrs. It takes nearly 2 days driving from the UK but is well worth the trip. A couple of things you missed on your guide. One of the nearest airports is Gibraltar and you didn't mention the campsites, several of which are right on the beach. A good budget option .
