Those coyotes were telling y'all you're entering their territory. Canines have sensitive hearing and heard the group, plus stomping on the ground was a surefire way of saying you're not friendly.
Actually making alot of nose is a good way to say your probably the biggest thing around expecially if your just screaming in the middle of the night out in the woods if you don't sound like a dieing rabbit you will be fine unless there are actually bigger things than you that will eat you then just stay inside at night and get some metal on your house
