When you're first starting out riding back roads or everywhere it can be best to just practice on putting the bike exactly where you want it. This can be done by trying to stay in the middle of the lane the entire time through a road. If you're having trouble then you can slow the pace down and if that's not enough help I suggest starting with an easier road for your capabilities. You may still need to be in parking lots or neighborhood roads.
If anyone knows the rider, have them reach out and I can do a free 1-on-1 with them to help progress their riding skills. Maybe we can help convince him that he should be wearing some gear as well.
